Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT: Fastest Thus Far

Filippo Ganna (Italy) was on a great ride doing everything he could to pull on the next Elite Men's Time Trial Rainbow Jersey.  Ganna was posting the best times at the first and (here) the second time check.  He continued the strong ride up Parliment Street to the line in Harrogate taking over the lead up to his finish.  While he did not win the day, he did take the Bronze Medal for his efforts.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT: On a Good One

Rohan Dennis (Australia) was clearly on a good ride today.  He was posting substantially better times than everyone to go before out on the course.  On the other hand, it was a truly bad day for Victor Campenaerts (Belgium).  Campenaerts had crashed which necessitated a bike change.  A little later, he had to change bikes again due to a mechanical.  The two incidents set up this catch by Dennis and left him well out of the medal hunt.  Surprisingly, Campenaerts did finish 11th as he rode across the line in Harrogate almost four minutes behind the time of Rohan Dennis.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT: On the Rise

I am having a little fun with this title.  Remco Evenepoel (Belgium) is on a small rise out on course as he rides in the Elite Men's ITT.  Evenepoel rode in 2018 as a Junior, but in Yorkshire he is riding with the elite men of the sport.  I am not sure if there has been a rule change, but it does make sense that if a rider has a Pro Tour team contract, then they must ride at the level of all of the other Pro Tour riders.  Normally, at the age of 19, Evenepoel would be competing in yesterday's U23 ITT, but opted instead to ride today.  He was posting best times at every point of his time trial, but dropped to second as the last man to start crossed the line in Harrogate.  Not to shabby!

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT - What Can He Do?

As you may have figured out, I use the TV broadcast to find these images to paint.  I usually just take images that I could physically see if I was on a motorcycle at the race.  That being said, I was intrique by this boom shot as Chad Haga (USA) rolled down the start ramp in Northallerton.  There was a strong possiblity that Haga would be able to lay down a great ride today.  Given the field of competitors, it was unlikely he would pull on a rainbow jersey at the end of the day, but a podium finish wasn't out of the question.  He did manage to finish inside of the top twenty on the day.  Perhaps his Tour de France ride left his too spent to deliver the ride he hoped for.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT: No Picnic

Riding an individual time trial is no picnic.  However it is a great opportunity for fans of cycling to enjoy one and some great bike racing.  This couple brought their Irish Wolfhounds to watch their dogs' countryman, Ryan Mullen (Ireland) ride by.  I am sure they were there to see most, if not all, of the others speed by as well.  I have seen some terrible scenes of dogs getting into the peloton in the past, but so far, all of the British dogs have been well behaved (and controlled).  Mullen, did not have an easy day of it finishing 32nd on the day.  I seem to remember him not getting the results he wanted when he raced as a Junior back in Richmond, Virginia in 2015.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's ITT: Every Twist and Turn

The crowds out enjoying the UCI Road World Championships in and around Harrogate have been amazing.  And they are continuing to build as we move towards the road races starting tomorrow.  Alexey Lutsenko (Kazakhstan) was cheered through every twist and turn of the 54 kilometer course.  Lutsenko has quite a few thousand race kilometers in his legs already, so he didn't produce the ride he would have hoped for.  He finished his day at 25th in the overall standings.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Women's ITT: Getting It Right

Lisa Klein (Germany) already has a Silver Medal from the Mixed Relay, but I am quite sure she was planning on adding to her medal count today.  She did stay on course as she turned on to the final climb up Parliment Street.  It seems that the course officials learned from their and Aigul Gareeva's (Russia) mistakes from the Junior Women's ITT with a marshal blocking the possiblity of going the wrong way.  Klein just missed the podium at her finished, but dropped to fifth with the bronze medal ride of Annemiek Van Vleuten.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Women's ITT: She Has Some Work to Do

Two time reigning Elite Women's Individual Time Trial Champion, Annemiek Van Vleuten (Netherlands) has some serious work to do if she was going to win her third Rainbow Jersey.  Van Vleuten was running around a minute and a half behind the American Chloe Dygert who had already compelted her ride.  In fact, it was going to be and effort to better her countrywoman, (and Road World Champion) Anna Van Der Breggen.  At the end of the day, Van Vleuten captured Bronze on the day with Van Der Breggen claiming Silver, continuing the overall dominance of Dutch Women in the world of cycling.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Women's ITT: Breathtaking

Breathtaking was how the commentator, Anthony McCrossan describe Chloe Dygert's (USA) ride in today's time trial.  I think we can take this both literally and figuratively.  When she finished her ride she was over three and a half minutes faster than anyone to finish their race thus far.  She ended the day taking the Rainbow Jersey of World Champion by just over a minute and a half from Anna Van Der Breggen (Netherlands) and an additional ten seconds from Annemiek Van Vleuten (Netherlands).

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Women's ITT: Two by Two

I pulled this title from two (sorry, yet another pun) different aspects of this painting.  First it has been raining so hard that it seemed that the animals should be gathered two by two and loaded onto Noah's Ark.  In fact, it looks like Noah just to the left of the painting checking is loading manifest.  The other, Chloe Dygert (USA) was on a storming ride to Harrogate catching riders two by two who had started their time trial ahead of her.  Dygert was clearly ignoring the signage on the roadway suggestion she go slow.  When the American went through the time check out on course, she was over four minutes faster than all of those who had gone before her.  Nobody logged a better time at the check than she did for the rest of the day either.
