Once Ivan Basso (Tinkoff Saxo) had done what he could for his teammate, Alberto Contador, he swung off the front encouraging Contador to good hard and fast to the top. Chris Froome (Sky) must have been having a little trouble earlier on the climb. He was a little ways back from the small group that Basso and Contador dropped. Realizing what may have been an error in judgment, he dropped his head and went off in search of the fleeing Spaniard. Unfortunately for the Sky rider, his adversary had a 30 second head start.
