Using the climb up Karnemelbeekstraat, the reigning World Champion, Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) found himself off of the front of the race with the former World Champion, Michal Kwiatkowski (Team Sky), Kwiatkowski was showing off his new team kit, and both riders have the rainbow stripes on their sleeves (an honor only a former World Champion has earned). Given the pedigree of these two riders, it was unlikely that those behind would see this duo again, even if another former World Champion was amongst those behind.
