Richard Carapaz (Ecuador) looked over at his breakaway companion, Jonas Koch (Germany) to ask if they were going to continue with their break, or wait for the chasers. The duo had gone with Primoz Roglic (Slovenia) who had already sat up to wait for the others. Behind them another group, about six strong were bridging across. With a larger group they stood a better chance of staying away from the peloton. Perhaps they were hoping to repeat the successes of the break aways from virtually every other road race in these UCI Road World Championships.
