Tour Down Under, Stage 3: Time to Celebrate

Long time followers of my cycling art will know that I love to go for puns and multiple interpretations in the titles of my paintings.  This is just such an example.  It can be read as having won the stage, Sam Welsford (Bora-Hansgrohe) had enough time to celebrate his second stage victory in this edition of the Tour Down Under, or now that he has crossed the line ahead of Elia Viviani (Ineos-Grenadiers) it is time to celebrate another stage victory.  Unlike his win on the first day of the Tour, he won’t be pulling on the Ochre Jersey of race leader this time. However, he will be pulling on the Blue Jersey of the best sprinter in the race (sometimes referred to as the points jersey).

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available through my website at greigleach.com or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of the post to purchase the painting above. Since it is an original work of art, it is a first come first served reality. The painting was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.Richesonart.com. The work sells for $95 USD including shipping, but yes international shipping is both available and extra.

Tour Down Under '23, Stage 3: The Dash to the Line

While it may have been Jay Vine (UAE Team Emeriates) who opened the attack that was quickly covered by Simon Yates (Jayco-Alula), it was the third man to join the escape at the summit of the Corkscrew, Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-Victorious) who had the legs to mount the most aggresive sprint in the final kilometer.  The duo of Yates and Bilbao were around twenty seconds down on the general classification from Jay Vine, so all Vine had to do was keep them close as they race to the line in Campbelltown.

Tour Down Under, Stage 4: Two Victorious

As I said in the previous post, the foursome of contenders were caught by the reduced (and elite) peloton.  Two of those who managed to get back on terms were the race leader, Paddy Bevin (CCC) and the stage winner, as well as defending champion of the race, Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott).  The duo went one-two on the stage, with the race perinnial, Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) taking third.  Impey got the stage win, but Bevin's second place was enough to keep in in the over all leader's jersey, and add time to those closest to him on the general classification.

It is beginning to look like the New Zealander, Bevin, is going to be rather difficult to unseat.

Tour Down Under, Stage 4: Superman

Few will argue that Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) is a super man when it comes to cycling.  Sagan had gone on the attack on the descent with about three kilometers left to go.  He was pulled back by several different teams including BMC, Astana and Mitchelton-Scott.  Not to be deterred, he caught his breath, took a drink and got ready to go again.  Daryl Impey (Mitchelton-Scott) launched his sprint first, but was caught by the three time UCI Road World Champion.  Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) rounded out the top three.  It was  Sagan's teammate, Jay McCarthy claiming fifth on the day.  Sagan's sprint was enough to put him in the Ochre Jersey of race leader by just two seconds over Impey.

I was amused to notice that I had forgot to sign and title this piece.  When I painted the Richmond 2015 UCI Road World Championships, live in downtown Richmond, I had gotten caught up in the moment of Sagan's win and not signed his victory salute painting.  So it is fitting that I didn't sign his first win of the 2018 Pro Tour season calender.

Tour Down Under, Stage 4: Over the Top

Today was the first day I have seen Team BMC on the front of the peloton.  They hit the front on the base of the climb up to Norton Summit with Miles Scotson.  At the top it was Richie Porte jumping out to grab the KOM points after the work of Simon Gerrans.  However, he just missed getting around his teammate, so it was Gerrans with maximum points, and Porte taking second over the top.  Niether gained enough points to take over the lead in the King of the Mountains competition so perhaps "no harm, no foul."  Now it was just seven kilometers of rollers for the stage victory.

Tour Down Under, Stage 4: Catching the Last Guy

With his teammate (and former breakaway companion) having done all he could, Zakkari Dempster (UniSA-Australia) pressed on in a solo effort to hold off the peloton.  Alas, with 19 kilometers left in the day, it was the peloton spread across the road that he saw looking back.  The break rarely succeeds, but it is always a risk worth taking.  He will be on the podium to take the "most aggressive rider" award.  Now the question is, will he be able to hold onto the tail of the fast moving peloton.  Spoiler: He could not.

Tour Down Under Stage 4: Three Out of Four

Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) came to this Tour to race!  He held off the charging Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Danny Van Poppel (Sky) to claim his third stage - out of four possible ones.  Sagan has finished second twice now and this is Van Poppel's first time on the podium in the 2017 Tour Down Under.  Ewan seems to be embracing the sprinter's red jersey and his team as he celebrates crossing the line in Campbelltown.

Tour Down Under Stage 4: A 10% Chance

The race commentators, Paul Sherwen, Phil Ligget and Robbie McEwan all gave these three break away riders about a ten percent chance of succeeding in staying off the front of the peloton.  Part of the problem is that Ondrej Cink (Bahrain-Merida) is only 57 seconds off of the race lead, so the BMC led peloton wasn't about to let him or Cameron Meyer (UniSA-Australia) nor Jack Bauer (Quickstep) get too much of a gap.  Perhaps if Cink wasn't with them the percentage chance of success might go up

Tour Down Under: Photo Finish

With experience comes skill.  Simon Gerrans (Orica GreenEdge) and Rohan Dennis (BMC) were able to catch the escapees on the descent.  A descent that reached speads in excess of 105 kilometers per hour.  The duo fought all of the way to the line.  So close was their finish that it had to go to the photo finished where it was learned that it was Gerrnas who came from behind to beat last year's winner at the line.  With Gerrans win and the bonus seconds, he will be taking the Ochre Jersey back for the home team.
