Giro, Stage 10: Recovery

With the passing of the rest day, I learned that it was Geraint Thomas (Sky) who had dislocated his shoulder in the motorcycle incident on the Blockhaus climb.  Thomas lost time due to time spent on the ground after the wreck and then more time trying to finish the climb to the summit.  Apparently, he recovers quite well, he was not only racing today, but setting best times along the course.  He took over the hot seat of first place when he crossed the line, beating his teammate Vasil Kiryenika, who had crashed out on course, and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana).  These men in funny skin tight outfits are truly tough, tough characters.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  It is only $75 USD and international shipping is available.

With the start of the Giro d'Italia, I am crowd funding my third cycling art book through Kickstarter.  I could use your support in making this book get made, please consider supporting the project here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1335072134/art-of-cycling-100th-giro-ditalia.  This will be just one of the hundred plus paintings that will be included.

Giro, Stage 10: Ready to Go

Tejay van Garderen (BMC) was held upright as he awaited his time to start in Folgino.  He had a rough day in the mountains on Sunday and was looking to today's time trial to set matters right.  Van Garderen is excellent against the clock and certainly possesses the ablity to put himself  back into contention.  The question is, does he have the will?  Or the form?

Tirreno-Adriatico Stage 4: An Absolute Flyer

Steve Cummings (Dimension Data) had been marking the attacks and hanging around with the escapees in support of his teammate, Edvald Boasson Hagen.  When the group Cummings was with got to far ahead of the peloton containing Boasson Hagen, Cummings was free to ride for himself.  And ride he did!  The Brit, after refusing to help those he had been with (at team orders), had the legs to ride everyone off of his wheel, taking an "absolute flyer" to the line for a solo victory in Foligno.

This is a small original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting, and most of my cycling art, is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  And yes, international shipping is available.

Plus, be sure to check out my newest book, "Art of Cycling: Richmond 2015 UCI Road World Championships" a complete telling of the 2015 Worlds through art and word painted live as the racing happened on the streets of my home town.

Giro d'Italia Stage 7: Along the Barriers

Nacer Bouhanni (FDJ) is fast proving himself to be the fast man of the Giro now that Marcel Kittel is no longer in the peloton.  Today he grabbed his second stage victory, this time getting the win without any of the other sprinters going down on wet slippery roads on the approach to the line.  He was able to charge past Luka Mezgec (Giant Shimano) who was the first to jump out from behind his train and to hold off the fast charging Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek Factory Racing).  Today's victory should be enough to but him back into the Red Jersey of the leader in sprint points (or most consistently strong finisher), the jersey he took over when Kittel couldn't start the first stage in Italy.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Giro d'Italia Stage 7: Sweeping Around the Right Hander

As it is that most flat stages of any Grand Tour tend to end in town, the approach to the line can be quite technical, meaning lots of twists and turns, swinging on and off of main boulevards and wrapping around roundabouts and traffic islands.  And this has to be done when the peloton's speed hits 50 or 60 kph, not for the faint of heart.  Even though Giant Shimano has lost their big man, Marcel Kittel, to fever, the lead out train was ready and willing to work for the next in line, Luka Mezgec, who has proven to be strong enough to hold the pro peloton at bay before.  The other main rivals teams where lined up behind, ready to bring their men forward when the time was right.  The part that makes this even more scary (and leads to huge crashes like Stage 6) is that the General Classification contenders want to be near the front as well, so it is that not only are Giant Shimano, FDJ and Cannondale in the mix, but so to has Orica-GreenEdge and BMC joined the dash to the line.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.  Do hurry though, being an original, there is only one to be had.
