Tour '24, Stage 7 ITT, Catching His Minute Man

Well technically, Stefan Bissenger (EF Education-EasyPost) was catching his minute and a half man.  In the time trial, each rider starts 90 seconds apart with the guy lowest on the general classification going first and then on up the standings in reverse order.  Once the starts get to the last fifteen guys on the GC, they start two minutes apart, just to keep this from happening.  Bissenger is a master at the Individual Time Trial so it wasn't that surprising that he caught Nikias Arndt (Bahrain-Victorious).  A little more surprising was that he wasn't the new best time when he got to the finish in Gevrey-Chambertain.

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available through my website at greigleach.com or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of the post to purchase the painting above. Since it is an original work of art, it is a first come first served reality. The work sells for $95 USD including shipping, but, yes, international shipping is both available and extra.

Tour Down Under '23, Final Stage: Chasing the Counter Move

Once he was caught, Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) found he had to chase the counter move launched by Ewen Costiou (Arkea-Samsic).  Mikias Arndt (Bahrain-Victorious) was able to get onto the wheel of his fellow countryman as they worked to catch the attack Frenchman.  You can see the shadows of their erstwhile break away companions trying to catch back up to the fleeing trio.

Flanders 2021: Leading Them Around

Once the previous three were caught, and then the early break of the day was reeled in too, it was time for Germany to hit the front and force the pace.  While Georg Zimmerman was on the front, the Belgium team was not missing any moves.  After Remeco Evenepoel was back in the field, it was Victor Campenaerts (Belgium) that was on Zimmermann’s wheel representing the host country.  The next rider following the leaders was another German, Nikias Arndt.  With 120 kilometers yet to race, it was wild just how aggressive the racing had been since the start in Antwerp.

Flanders 2021: Is He Waving Farewell?

I may never know why Tony Martin (Germany) was waving his arm while in the first leg of the Mixed Team Time Trial with Max Walschied and Nikias Arndt. But it almost seemed as though he was waving farewell to all of his fans from around the world.  This is Martin’s last race as a professional and thanks to these two guys and his female teammates, Lisa Breannauer, Lisa Klein, and Mieke Kroger, it was a gold medal earning finale.  While he certainly couldn’t do it alone, nor did he, it was a truly fabulous way to end an even more amazing career as a professional cyclist.  I am going to miss watching him race, but I am sure he won’t be totally gone from the cycling world.

Bergen 2017, Elite Men's Road Race: Warming Up

As the peloton came onto the 11 lap circuit, after having already gotten 39 kilometers into their legs, they were definitely warming up.  With the feed zone and scores of soigneurs just up the road, many like Nikias Arndt (Germany) decided to pull off a layer or two.  Just ahead of the disrobing Germany was Luke Durbridge (Australia).  I always feel a bit sheepish about one of my paintings of Durbridge from 2014.  He was accidentally knocked over by a soigneur on an opposing team in the Tour de France.  He jumped back up and pushed the offender over, got back on his bike and rode on.  I capture that moment in my book, "Book du Tour".  I have been trying to show his better side ever since.  This duo was letting a bit of a gap open, but with Durbridge's power, it will be closed in a heartbeat.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  It is only $75 USD and international shipping is available.

Giro Stage 20: Flat, for Now

The penultimate stage of the 98th Giro d'Italia spent over a hundred kilometers on near pan flat roads, but the day ended with the peloton hitting the highest point of the entire Giro, the Colle Delle Finestre.  For Mauro Finetto (Southeast Pro Cycling), Nikias Arndt (Giant Alpecin) and Lijo Keisse (IAM Cycling), this would probably be the last time they would see the front of the peloton until the start of tomorrow's final stage.  Many of those around the back today were simply trying to conserve energy for what is sure to be a sprinter's contest in Milan.  Their only worry was to make sure they finished inside the time limit.  It would truly suck to not be allowed to start (and finish) the final stage after having ridden so many days and kilometers of the last twenty stages.

This is a small original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  In addition, this painting is available for purchase from my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To buy this particular painting for only $50 USD, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  But be advised, this is a one of a kind painting, so don't delay, when it is gone, it is gone.
