Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Street Skateboarding: Backside

I'm sorry, but the title was just too tempting.  While I don't know the exact name of the trick that won the Silver Medal for Jagger Eaton (USA), I do know that 'backside' is part of its name.  And of course, we are looking at this skater's backside.  It is a bit of a relief that I can still paint a sport that I know so little about.  Way, way back in the 70s I did some skateboarding and wasn't very good.  Admittedly, as in most sports, the equipment is so much better now.  On the other hand, that is about the time I discovered the joy of cycling and all other sports fell away.

Nyjah Huston (USA) put together a great 45 seconds run of tricks that put him into the medal competition.  With five attempts to hit a best trick he felt sure it was worth the risk on this one.  I'm sorry I am not up on the skateboarding lingo, so I can't tell you the name of the trick that won him the Bronze Medal.

Tour de France 23, Stage 21: Chasing a Cheeky Move

While the early tradition of the final stage of the Tour were observed, others were not.  The team of the Maillot Jaune did not get a chance to ride around in a lap of honor before the racing began.  They did ride out of the Louvre and onto the circuit between the Place de la Concorde and the l'Arc Triomphe, but as they hit the Champs Elysees the racing began in earnest.  But the real shocker was when Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) went on the attack at the intermediate sprint.  And then having gotten the maximum points continued with his attack.  His move was covered by the teammate of the Yellow Jersey, Nathan van Hooydnock (Jumbo-Visma).  It was funny when Pogacar flicked his elbow to get the Jumbo man to pull through.  Naturally, there was no way he was going to help the man in second place try and steal time on his teammate, Jonas Vingegaard, who had the lead.  With forty seven kilometers of Champs Elysees laps to go, it isn't enough road to get the kind of gap he would need to take the lead, it does make sure we all know that he is still in the Tour and he still loves to race his bike.

Tour Femmes '22, Stage 1: Still She Persists

This painting is sold.

Yes, I am back to fun with titles. You all must know what Senator Mitch McConnell said of Senator Elizabeth Warren, "and still she persisted."  I did admire her then, and I admire Galdys Verhulst (Le Col-Wahoo) for continuing to persist with her solo attack while the peloton chased her down in the closing kilometers.  At this point she had a ten second lead with just under three kilometers to race.  Alas, whe was caught in just another 600 meters after I painted this moment.  I hope this does earn her the most combative rider award.

Tour, Stage 21: Around the Place du la Concorde

Some day someone will invent a pen with spell check...  I try to be as much in the moment when creating these works as possible and sometimes I get my titles wrong.  When I published my Tour de France book in 2014 (on my website under "Cycling Books Gallery") there were lots of edits, and I had to correct spelling on everything I tried to use French words for.

Now back to the race.  With the traditions of the day honored, it was time for some bike racing.  Every time, someone tries to surprise the peloton and jump off of the front.  In very, very rare occasions, this gambit has worked.  This quartet of Omar Fraille (Astana), Tom Scully (EF Education First), Jan Tratnik (Bahrain-Merida) and Niels Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) thought they would be the ones to beat the odds.  They weren't.  As they rounded the corner to go into the tunnel under the Place de la Concorde they had built up a twenty-five second lead over the currently contented peloton.
