The Tour Down Under seems to be the race of the lone break away, so far two out of three stages have featured a solo effort. Only the first stage had a three man break. To go solo is a tall order, but Laurens De Vreese (Astana) had the faith that he could beat the odds. With Vreese out front the rest of the Astana team was able to sit in in the peloton saving their energy for a possible ploy on the final climb of the day.
