The team leader for Sky, Mikel Landa was being cheered on by his teammate Sebastian Henao. Team Sky was the worse off for a collison with one of the police escort motorcycles that had stop on the side of the road. Those not on the front of the peloton have little chance to see what obsticals are on the road, trusting those who can see to warn of the dangers ahead. However sometimes things happen just too fast to give warning. Landa's teammate and the other main hopeful for Team Sky, Geraint Thomas, was left writhing on the road with an apparent broken collar bone, while the strong man Vasil Kiryienka looked for another bike. Both were able to eventually get underway, but it was probably the end of their Giro plans.
