Giro Stage 11: Flying Home

Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha) pulled a brilliant late stage solo attack to take the victory on the Autodromo Ferrari finishing straight away.  Zakarin had been a member of the early breakaway, but saw his chance to go on his own with a lap and a half to go to the line.  That does make two stages in a row where a member of the early break has taken the victory at the end of the stage.  The title is derived from both his outstretched arms as he crossed the line, but more importantly, his daredevil descent from the penultimate climb of the day, a descent where he figuratively flew down the categorized climb.

Giro Stage 11: Pushing On

The penultimate trip up the climb above the Autodromo was the only time King of the Mountain points would be awarded.  Although none of this group, Ryder Hesjedal (Cannondale Garmin), Carlos Betancur (AG2R), Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha) among others, where interested in gaining the points.  They were far more interested in claiming a stage of the Giro to add to the Palmares.  However, it was Zakarin who jumped out of the group, claimed the points and then pressed on with his attack.

Giro Stage 11: Motoring

The final four lap circuit included a section of the Autodromo Ferrari in Imola.  With a wide open raceway at his disposal, Stefan Kung (BMC) took off from the peloton in search of the breakaway that was just over a minute up the road.  Plus, his attack took the responsibility of the chase off of the rest of the teams shoulders.  When ever a team has a teammate up the road, they are no longer expected to help in the chase of any breakaways.

Giro Stage 11: Over They Go

Stage 11 into Imola included a circuit that included for climbs up a category 4 climb (although points were only award on the penultimate trip up the hill).  The early break seems to have pulled it over on the peloton for the second day in a row.  This group that included, Steven Kruijswijk (LottoNL Jumbo) his third appearance in a break, Diego Rosa (Astana), Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha) and Benat Intxausti (Movistar) among others.  The group is about to start their descent back down into Imola and onto the Autodromo Ferrari where the race will conclude on the finishing straight of the raceway in three more laps.
