Tour Femmes '26, Stage 9: Escorting Their Leader

Marlen Reusser (Movistar) has had a rough end of the Tour de France Femmes this year.  Since losing her Maillot Jaune on the climb up to the summit of Mont Ventoux, she has been slowly losing time in the general classification.  Today, on her second descent of Col d'Eze she crashed on a corner coming out of one of the many tunnels on today's course.  She took some time getting back on her bike, but she did. She was with one of her teammates when she crashed but more joined her as they made their way back down into Nice.  She was escorted by back into town by Francesca Barale, Ana Vitoria Magalhaes, Liane Lippert and Paula Ostiz.  She could have easily climbed off her bike once back to the start/finish line, but no, she and her team did the two remaining laps together.  They all came in twenty-five minutes after the stage winner, but she certainly earned even more respect today.  And she paid respect to the Tour de France Femmes as well.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 9: How Much?

As the peloton came through Nice to start the second of four laps, both Malwina Mul (Cofidis) and Paula Ortiz (Movistar) had managed to get off the front of the of the reduced group.  They each peeked to see if they were getting much of an advantage.  Racing through the downtown area it was Ostiz's turned to peer back to assess where the chasers were.  The peloton wasn't too concerned.  The first trip up Col d'Eze had dropped about have of the one hundred and twenty some women who had started the final stage.  It was safe to assume that these two would most likely suffer the same fate.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 9: Are We Good?

I missed all of the controversy about a single turn on the final climb of stage 8 of the Tour de France Femmes.  Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon/SRAM) had accused FDJ United-Suez of intentionally blocking her when their leader attacked on the final climb.  As I watched it, I felt that while it was unfortunate that she could respond to the attack, she had chosen the wrong line into the corner.  I put it down to frustration and fatigue.  At the start of today's final stage of the race both she and Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) seemed to have a rather lengthy conversation.  While we won't know what was set, I like to think that they settled their differences and decided to let their legs do the talking.  In her post race interview... perhaps not.  Ahead of these two was Marlen Reusser (Movistar) who sits in third place and had lost her Maillot Jaune to Niewiadoma along with her teammate, Paula Ostiz.  Behind the top three of the Tour Femmes is Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal).  I wonder how much of the argument will fuel the racing today.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 7: We've Done Our Part

As the peloton approaches the base of the Mont Ventoux, the leaders' domestiques begin to pop off the front of the group with their jobs done.  So it was with Francesca Barale and her Movistar teammate Sara Martin. Barale reaches out and pats her teammate's back congratulating her on the work she has done for their team leader, Marlen Reusser, who started the day in the Maillot Jaune.  These two have done their part in making sure she will still be leading the Tour after the climb of Mont Ventoux.  A mere nineteen kilometers will reveal the fruit of their collaborative efforts.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 5: The Perfect Ending

Well, it was a perfect ending for all of the work that Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) and her team had put in all day long.  She came into Belleville en Beaujolais with Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon/SRAM) and Marlen Reusser (Movistar).  It was Niewiadoma who got the jump on the other two, but faded as Vollering and Reusser chased her down.  They both came around the Polish star with only fifty meters to the line.  In the end it was Vollering in her European Champion's jersey who raised her arms in victory.  Just behind her were Reusser who we can see and Niewiadoma whom we can not.  The three are now the top three in the general classification, with Reusser holding her Maillot Jaune, Vollering in second and Niewiadoma holding the third step of the podium.  There is just over a minute between the three but the first two are only twelve seconds apart.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 5: Leading Up the Brouilly

Mont Brouilly was the final climb of the day, the final out of eight categorized climbs!  It proved to be the climb that changed the general classification in unexpected ways.  As they climbed, it was Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) that kept attacking the others hoping to go alone to the finish and into the Maillot Jaune.  But each attacked was matched by Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon/SRAM).  Not quite as quick to respond was Marlen Reusser (Movistar) in the Yellow Jersey.  She did manage to get back on every time, however.  Isabella Homgren (Lidl-Trek) was hanging tough until the descent down the other side of the climb.  She was close to claiming the Maillot Blanc, but that went to Niewiadoma's teammate Antonia Niedermaier.  It was just Vollering, Reusser, and Niewiadoma that came together to sprint it out for the stage in Belleville en Beaujolais.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 4 ITT: Sprinting for Seconds

As Marlen Reusser (Movistar) came up the finishing straight she came up out of the saddle to sprint to the line in hopes of taking the stage in the discipline that she is the World Champion of.  It worked she finished just four seconds ahead of the woman who had been in the hot seat for most of the day, Leike Nooijen (Visma-Lease a Bike).  But she did more than win the stage, she is the new Maillot Jaune, the leader of the Tour de France Femmes.  And that she holds by fourteen seconds over the woman she out rode by seventeen seconds.

Tour Femmes '26, Stage 3: Time to Chase

I'm not sure why it took so long, but with thirty-eight kilometers to race, the peloton finally started to chase the two women up the road.  With the increase in pace, the peloton stretched out into a fast single-file line with those at the back wondering what happened.  Paula Ostiz (Movistar) popped off the back just after I painted this.  Maeva Squiban (UAE Team L'IMAD) - who had won a stage so beautifully last year - hung onto the wheel of Laura Ascencio (Ma Petite Entreprise) with Malwina Mul (Cofidis) and Emilie Morier (St Michel-Home Preference-Auber93) hanging onto the wheels in front of them. Everyone but Ostiz finished with the peloton, but none ever caught the two up the road.

Tour '26, Stage 18: The Points Are Up the Road

As this five-some climbed the Cote de Monteynard they were chasing a group of six that had twenty-one seconds on them.  Not a situation that either Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-Quick Step) nor Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) were happy with.  Both men were hoping to take over the lead in the King of the Mountains competition.  Yes, Paret-Peintre is wearing the jersey, but it is "on loan" from the race leader, Tadej Pogacar.  The Soudal-Quick Step rider has already gone first over the first climb of the day, out sprinting Carapaz for the maximum KOM points.  The other three were happy to ride behind the aggressors.  Mauro Schmid (Jayco-Alula), Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar) and Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) were happy to let the other two pull them up to the leading breakaway.  Both Vacek and Pierna had teammates up the road, so there were going to, nor were they expected to, work to chase down the leaders.  I should note that they did join up before the summit with Paret-Peintre getting the maximum KOM points ahead of Carapaz, again.

Tour '26, Stage 15: It Won't Be Today

Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-Quick Step) started today in the Maillot a Pois having moved into second place with his brilliant ride yesterday.  He held the King of the Mountains title virtually, but it went back to Tadej Pogacar once he won the mountain top finish.  Paret-Peintre did take the first points on the first climb of the day, but now he is tangling at the back of the peloton with Georg Steinhauser (EF Education-EasyPost), Ben O'Connor (Jayco-Alula) and Pablo Castrillo (Movistar) as the large breakaway forms off the front.  He went deep yesterday, so he can be forgiven for not having the legs today.  He did manage to hold onto his second place in the composition, but Pogacar stretched the lead further out.  More on that later.

Tour '26, Stage 13: He Chased Them Down

Somehow, Mads Pedersen nor any of his Lidl-Trek teammates made the very large breakaway today.  He helped to form another break of about 26 riders, and with was mainly his effort, the two groups came together before the intermediate sprint.  The sprint came late in this the longest Tour de France stage this year, so he had plenty of time to set things to rights.  He chased because is primary rival for the Maillot Vert was in that front group.  Downside, he pulled his other rival along with him.  Once merging to the two groups, he rode up to the front to see just who was were.  He found Fred Wright (Pinarello-Q36.5) in his new British Champion's Jersey, along with Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar) on the front of the now very, very large escape.  With fifty-six guys in the front, it wasn't much smaller than the peloton that was now just shy of seven minutes back down the road.  I think it is safe to say, that today will be a day for the breakaway.

Tour '26, Stage 11: Rolling Through

As the four-man breakaway hit a rise in the road, Julian Alaphilippe dropped off the back, not having the legs to hang with the other three.  Without the one they thought would most likely beat them in the sprint, the trio of Nelson Oliviera (Moivstar), Mathias Le Berre (TotalEnergies), and Anthon Charmig (Uno X-Mobility) continued to work together, each sharing their pulls on the front.  Surprisingly, they actually increased their advantage over the peloton despite this being the fastest stage in the history of the Tour de France.  The record was set way back in 1999.  The 113th Tour keeps setting new records daily.  I'm going to guess that this is the most riders to start an eleventh stage of the Tour as well.  Having sped up, it was still unlikely the sprinters and their teams were going to let them stay off the front by the time they reach Nevers.  At this point they still had twenty-one kilometers to go and only had an advantage of forty-five seconds.  Clearly, not enough to claim the day.

Tour '26, Stage 10: The Last Guy

The day was marked by multiple attempts to form a breakaway all inspired by the Frenchmen in the peloton.  The French always hope to win on Bastille Day, but it wasn't in the cards or in their legs today.  The last guy from the breakaway was the Spaniard Javier Romo riding for the Spanish team Movistar.  That didn't stop the French fans from waving their flags and cheering on the lone rider as he started down the Cote de Murat.  I should point out that a French man was able to claim third on the stage, Paul Seixas, who is continuing to live up to all of the faith the French public has put in the 19 year old.

Tour '26, Stage 9: Tete de la Course

The translation of the title is "head of the race."  At sixty-nine kilometers to go, Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling) was in a small breakaway with a twenty-four second gap to the peloton.  Alaphilippe is not having the best of Tours, so it was nice to see him at the right end of the race today.  He and his teammate, Marco Haller, are on one of two teams that are wearing a black kit, not the best color for the hottest day of the Tour's history.  Three of the other hottest days in history are also from this, the 113th, Tour de France.  That may be why Alaphilippe is pouring his water bottle onto his teammates back.  At this point they are joined by Michel Hessman (Movistar), Dorian Godon (Netcompany-Ineos) and Xabier Mikel Zaparren (Pinarello-Q36.5).  I should point out that shortly after I painted this, the group was chased down and absorbed by the peloton.  It was the last time I saw the idol of the French cycling fans today.

Tour '26, Stage 4: Who Is Where?

First, I admit that I take pleasure that the two Americans in this painting are both Quinns.  Silly, I know, but then so am I (at times).  Sean Quinn (EF Education-EasyPost) looks back to see where is rival to take the Maillot Jaune today is.  Both he and the Norwegian Torstein Traeen (Uno X-Mobility) have a very strong chance of being the next to pull on the Maillot Jaune with they reach Foix.  Quinn will have to gain thirty-three seconds on Traeen to have the honor of the Yellow Jersey.  Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) is looking back to make sure his team's sprinter Mads Pedersen is still in the group.  I am sure he would love to win the stage for himself, but he and another teammate are there for their sprinter to have the best chance at a stage win and claiming the Maillot Vert.  Mixing it with the Americans and the Norwegian are Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin-Premier Tech) and Pablo Castrillo (Movistar) along six other hopefuls.  I should point out here that Traeen did gain enough time to claim the Maillot Jaune with an almost eight-minute advantage over Tadej Pogacar.  Sean Quinn sits in second 28 seconds behind the Norwegian. Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), also a member of the breakaway, rounds out the third step of the podium in Foix.

Tour '26, Stage 3: Virtual King

Despite being dropped before the climb of the Col de Toses, it was Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) going over the first Category 1 climb of this Tour de France. By being the first over the first big climb he moves into the virtual lead for the Polka Dot Jersey.  By the end the stage, he turned the virtual jersey in to the actual Maillot a Pois.  He was followed over the top by Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and the guy who started the climb first, Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar).  The climb (and most of the first three stages of the Tour) were lined by fans flying the Catalonian flag.  In just 24 kilometers, the Tour will return to its native soil.

Tour '26, Stage 3: Starting the Climb First

Raul Garcia (Movistar) broke free from his erstwhile breakaway companions to start the first Category 1 climb of this Tour de France.  He quickly opened up a ten second gap as he rode past the placard announcing the start of the Col de Toses.  He well knows that whoever gets to the summit first will most likely take the Maillot a Pois of the best climber in the Tour.

Tour '26, Stage 1: Looking for Their Leader

As Movistar hit the first of the two final climbs, their team leader Cian Uijtdebroeks wasn't able to hold the wheels of his teammates.  As his teammates realized they didn't have him with them, they looked back debating how long they should wait, or if he would recover in the final kilometers.  The Spanish champion Raul Garcia Pierna waited as Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda wondered what he should do.  It was decided to let Pablo Castrillo go on ahead to gain the best time possible for the team and the others would bring Uijtdebroeks to the line as fast as he could manage.  After all, it is only the first stage of the Tour, there is plenty of time to regain lost time knowing full well that most anything gain happen over the next twenty stages.

Fleche Wallonne '26: Any Takers?

As the peloton went over the top of the Huy de Mur for the first time Raul Garcio Pierna (Movistar) went on the attack off the front. After opening up a slight gap, he looked back to see if anyone was going to join him in his escape effort.  Several joined him, they got caught, he went again, and then it all came to not.  Of course, there was still over seventy kilometers to race, it was a bit early to go for a winning move.  I do realize that there are still four guys off the front that have been there for a least a hundred kilometers all ready.

Tour Femmes '25, Stage 6: Running with the Polka Dots

There are millions and millions of cycling fans that line the roadways of grand tours and all of the other races in the ProTour calendar, this is another that seems to be making a name for himself like Didi Stenft as the Devil has.  Problem is, I don't know who he is.  I saw him most every day on the men's Tour, and here he is running with the women's Tour as well.  I have seen him way back at the US Pro Challenge and the Tour of California when those races still existed.  Today he was running along with the lead group.  He does seem to give the riders their space, even being sure to go behind the soigneurs waiting to pass bidons to their riders.  Elise Chabbey (FDJ-Suez) seems to be more concerned about QOM points with both Brodie Chapman (UAE Tema ADQ) and Liane Lippert (Movistar) on her wheel than the man with the antlers on a football helmet.  Another watching both the uber fan and the Maillot a Pois is Silke Smulders (Liv-Alula-Jayco) who is vying for the polka dots, too.
