Tour '26, Stage 21: Finishing It Off!

Amazingly, Mathieu Van Der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) found the legs after chasing Tadej Pogacar to hold off the fast-closing peloton in the finally six hundred meters of the Tour de France.  As he did the sprinter's bike throw he looked to his right to see his teammate Jasper Philipsen celebrating.  At first, I thought that Philipsen had outsprinted his teammate, but no, he was celebrating MDVP's stage victory on the Champs Elysees.  That means that their team went first and second in the final stage of the 113th Tour de France.  It was the Maillot Vert taking third on the stage.  Mads Pedersen gave up five points to Philipsen, but it was hardly enough points to change the final destination of the sprinters' jersey. Behind it was Biniam Girmay, Olav Kooij, Max Kanter, and Anthony Turgis with the less than successful sprints.  Nevertheless, it is no small feat to have made it over the alps and three times over the climb up Montmartre to even be in the top ten on the stage.

This is the last painting of this year's Tour de France.  I will have six days off and then I will be back with the Tour de France Femmes.  I hope you will read along with the women's race, too.

Tour '26, Stage 20: Flying Down the Galibier

Attacking, or more accurately, just out riding the rest of the peloton over the summit of the Galibier the top five of the general classification flew back down the other side.  With fifty-two kilometers to race the quintet of Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) along with his teammate Isaac Del Toro, Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CGA CMA), and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious) still had another four-and-a-half minutes to bridge up to the still cohesive breakaway.  I have always looked at descent as a reward for all of the struggles climbing a mountain, I'm not so sure about these twisty roads with the sheer drop-offs.  But I am willing to give it a try.

Tour '26, Stage 20: Staying Topped Up

The young American Matthew Riccitello on the French team Decathlon-CMA CGM, was still in the front group as they climbed the Col du Telegraphe.  It seemed that he was up front either for the stage, or as a satellite rider for his even younger teammate Paul Seixas.  With another five kilometers to climb, he wisely dropped back to his team car to get a bidon and some gels.  I am sure he will shortly be back on the wheel of Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost) who is currently riding tail gun in the breakaway.  The group has a decent advantage over the peloton with another eighty-eight kilometers in the final mountain stage of the Tour.

Tour '26, Stage 16 ITT: A Fan Favorite

Perhaps I should have titled this one, "The Fan Favorite."  Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) is the young French rider who has all of France hoping that they are seeing the next Frenchman to win their home three-week Tour.  It has been forty-one years since a Frenchman has finished the Tour in the Maillot Jaune.  That is a long time to wait.  I imagine that Seixas' grandfather was a young man the last time the French won their race.  It was expected that he would struggle with the individual time trial but that was not the case today.  He finished the race of truth gaining time on everyone except the guys in first and second places in the general classification.  He also gained back five seconds on Isaac Del Toro in the race for the Maillot Blanc of the best young rider in the Tour de France.  He is definitely the youngest and he is showing that he is also one of the best regardless of age.  How many of the young boys on the side of the road will one day race in the Tour themselves?

Tour '26, Stage 15: Fighting to Stay in White

In can be argued that Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) is the best young rider in the Tour, he is certainly the youngest rider in a very long time.  Yesterday he claimed the Maillot Blanc that is awarded to the best placed rider under the age of 25 at the start of the Tour.  On the climb of the Plateau de Solaison, he was in danger of losing that white jersey.  On his wheel was the winner of that honor from 2025, Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). Lipowitz wasn't about to help the teenager.  His teammate was up the road, so Lipowitz was going to sit on the wheel and try to out sprint him for fourth on the stage.  He couldn't quite manage it, finishing just behind Seixas, much as they are now.   Seixas came in 52 seconds behind Isaac Del Toro who got a six second time bonus for finishing third.  The Maillot Blanc will go back to Del Toro, with Seixas in second trailing by twenty-five seconds.  He does move into fourth in the general classification behind Del Toro, again, by obviously the same time gap.

Tour '26, Stage 15: Quick Change

I've been looking for the moment to paint the American and Tour debutante Matthew Riccitello (Decathlon-CMA CGM).  He would have preferred me not to have had this opportunity.  As the peloton climbed the Cote de Mont, the climber would have rather been continuing to help his team leader the younger Paul Seixas, than to be having a bike change after a flat tire.  Given the importance of keeping Riccitello with Seixas for the final kilometers of the stage, the mechanic and director sportive opted for giving him his spare bike rather than taking the time to change his rear wheel since the race was fully on now.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Racing to the Podium

With Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) having already won the stage, this trio was racing for the remaining two steps of the stage podium.  It could be argued that his teammate Isaac Del Toro, Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) were also racing for the podium in Paris as well.  The sprint went to Del Toro, followed by Seixas at the same time.  Vingegaard let another six seconds open up between him and the other two.  Plus, they earned small time bonuses for their second and third places.  Seixas also took over the Maillot Blanc of the best younger rider in the Tour, his time bonus helped but he would still be in White tomorrow regardless.  At nineteen years of age, he is the youngest guy to start the Tour de France since 1905!  He is now in fourth, with Del Toro in seventh.  Vingegaard holds his second place but loses more time to Pogacar.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Now He Goes!

After Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) had been isolated others had tried to go on the offensive.  But once everyone was on their own without teammates to aid them, that is when Pogacar took off.  For a few seconds it looked like Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) were going to be able to hold onto the wheel of the Maillot Jaune.  They could not. Behind them in his Maillot Blanc Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) was finding the pace just too much to handle.  Once he has gone it is very rare that Pogacar is seen again.  Today was no exception.  I wasn't pleased with the camera angles when he won the stage, so this will have to do for his victory painting.  Let's face it, this is when he won the stage.  I do think he has already won the Tour.  Although today he seemed weaker, but then he could have been doing the 'rope a dope' move of feinting weakness in order to get his rivals to over commit.  That may have been what happened to Vingegaard today.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Are You Coming with Me?

While the American Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) tamped out a rhythm on the front of the reduced peloton for his team leader Jonas Vingegaard, others saw an opportunity to attack.  Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) jumped free of the peloton and found he had Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) on his wheel.  The young Frenchman looked back at the Visma-Lease a Bike guys and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) perhaps surprised that they didn't respond to his attack.  After all, Seixas started the day in fifth place, and the French are convinced he has the capability of winning the Tour soon.  The Maillot a Pois, and the Maillot Jaune were right not to chase, Seixas was soon back in the fold, but his attack dislodge some other pretenders to the throne.

Tour '26, Stage 11: Never Doubt

In his post-race interview, stage winner Soren Waerenskjold (Uno X-Mobility) confessed that he wasn't confident about being able to win a Tour de France stage, but in Nevers, he overcame that doubt.  He took the stage in a longer than usual sprint ahead of Olav Kooij (Decathlon-CMA CGM), Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) - he is still looking for that Tour stage win this year - and Milan Fretin (Cofidis).  It must have been that much more special to know that he had the best sprint after racing the fastest Tour de France stage ever.  Uno X-Mobility are having an exceptional Tour.  They now have a stage victory, and they have held the Maillot Jaune for two days.  Most teams cannot boast of either.

Once the peloton had caught the lone escapee remaining, it was eyes down for the sprint.  Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick Step) came from a long way back to claim his second stage victory in a row in Bergerac. It was looking like Biniam Girmay (NSN Cycling) was about to get his first stage at the Tour de France in two years until Merlier came from seemingly nowhere.  On his wheel was Olav Kooij (Decathlon-CMA CGM) who was hoping he would be the sprinter to win two stages in the 113th Tour de France. Tomorrow, we go back to the hills, so I expect it won't be a day for these pure sprinters.  Will it be the breakaway that succeeds or will it be a GC day?

Tour '26, Stage 6: The Race for Third

With Tadej Pogacar up the road about to win the stage and Jonas Vingegaard in between this sextet was racing for third place on the stage.  They may also be racing for third place in the Tour de France as well.  Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) was using his time trial prowess in hopes of pulling those two back.  He may have been riding for himself or, perhaps, for his teammate Florian Lipowitz.  Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) was riding in case they do catch Vingegaard.  Should they, he would be ready to bury himself for his team leader.  Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain-Victorious) were riding to minimize their disadvantage to Pogacar and Vingegaard.  Just out of frame is Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) who was the one who managed third on the stage, and now sits third on the general classification as well.

Tour '26, Stage 6: Creating Some Space

With another five kilometers to climb up the Tourmalet, Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) up the pace with his teammate Tadej Pogacar on his wheel.  The two champions opened up a bit of a gap on Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and the youngster Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM).  Pogacar has had his team on the front for the last fifty kilometers and now it was time to try and drop everyone else and go off the front.  Would the Dane be able to regain his composure and get back to his main rival's wheel?  I think you already know the answer.

Tour '26, Stage 5: A Clean Set of Wheels

I feel I may need to explain the title.  A clean set of wheels means that someone as such an advantage at the finale, that no one is anywhere near them, thus a clean set of wheels refers to no one in their slipstream or threatening to pass them.  That is just how strong of a sprint Olav Kooij (Decathlon-CMA CGM) was able to mount. He has now won his first Tour de France stage and in so doing got the first stage win for his French team as well.  Unable to match his burst of speed but still holding on for second was the guy who took the intermediate sprint, Max Kanter (XDS-Astana).  The final step of the podium in Pau went to Tim Merlier (Soudal-Quick Step) followed in turn by Huub Artz (Lotto-Intermarche).  Biniam Girmay (NSN Cycling) only managed to finish sixth, but did add some more points in his quest for the Maillot Vert.  I am not sure where the current wearer of the sprinter's jersey finished, but Mads Pedersen did hold on to his Green Jersey.  In fact, none of the leader's jerseys changed shoulders today.  I doubt that will be the case tomorrow as they race over the Tourmalet before ending atop Gauarnie-Gedre.

Tour '26, Stage 3: Flying to Victory!

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) used the short climb up to the summit at Les Angles to get the jump on the remaining peloton of race favorites.  He opened a small gap on Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) as the Maillot Jaune looked back to see if anyone else was attacking.  That look back seemed to make him lose the wheel of the rainbow jersey, a mistake that left a two second gap between the two main rivals for the win in Paris.  And in so doing, not only did Pogacar win the stage, with the time bonus he drew equal in time with Vingegaard.  That means he will be the next to wear the coveted Maillot Jaune.  Behind, it was Vingegaard in second, followed by Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) in third and Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM). Everyone else keeps their positions in the General Classification.  However, Del Toro will be wearing the Maillot Blanc of best young rider, Vingegaard will be wearing the Maillot Vert (he is second in that competition) as Pogacar will be in the Maillot Jaune.  Of course, Alex Baudin will be in the Maillot a Pois despite not being present at the finale of the stage.

Tour '26, Stage 3: Virtual King

Despite being dropped before the climb of the Col de Toses, it was Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) going over the first Category 1 climb of this Tour de France. By being the first over the first big climb he moves into the virtual lead for the Polka Dot Jersey.  By the end the stage, he turned the virtual jersey in to the actual Maillot a Pois.  He was followed over the top by Nicolas Prodhomme (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and the guy who started the climb first, Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar).  The climb (and most of the first three stages of the Tour) were lined by fans flying the Catalonian flag.  In just 24 kilometers, the Tour will return to its native soil.

Tour '26, Stage 2: Take Mine & Go!

With just around fifteen kilometers to go Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) has a flat tire, fortunately his teammate Aurelien Paret-Peintre was right there.  After passing his bike to his team leader, Paret Peintre gently lays Seixas' bike on the road before giving his compatriot a push to get going again.  The bike was a bit large for the leader of Decathlon but it would do until the team car could give him his own spare.  The fans were thrilled to get to see the hope of the French so close up.  Admittedly these are Spanish fans, assuming they are locals, but then the Tour brings people from all over the world to watch the race from the side of the road.

Tour '26, Stage 1: Finishing His First Tour Stage

Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) finishes his first stage of the Tour de France in his very young lifetime.  Seixas is the youngest rider to start the Tour since 1930 at not quite 20 years old.  He had the disadvantage of being on a team that is not known for its time trial prowess yet managed to finish just 39 seconds off of the time of the stage winner.  He now sits in tenth place, and fourth in the race for the White Jersey of the best young rider of this Tour de France.

Liege Bastogne Liege '26: Over a Minute Now

These two kept adding to their advantage as they speed towards Liege.  At this point, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) was on the front, but Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM) was taking his share of pulls as the sped down the Cote des Forges.  With almost a minute and a half on the lone chaser, it was a little strange that the young Frenchman was helping the World Champion.  Was he going too deep, or was he racing to make sure no one bridged back up to them?  Or more likely, was the young man just so thrilled to be racing at this level, that excitement was getting the better of him?

As everyone expected Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) to attack on the Cote de la Redoute.  What wasn't expected (although I did) was that the only guy who could stay on the World Champion's wheel was the young Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM).  The two quickly opened up a twenty second gap on many of the best riders in the peloton.  With this move, will the duo go together to the line in Liege or will one drop the other in the remaning thirty kilometers?
