Tour '26, Stage 15: In the Blink of an Eye

Whatever the plan was for Jonas Vingegaard and his Visma=Lease a Bike team was, this surely wasn't it!  I don't normally paint the crashes, but this one set the 113th Tour de France on its ear.  As the peloton came into a right-hand bend littered with traffic furniture Vingegaard lost his front wheel and went down hard into the curbing on the side of the road.  Several others went down with him including Fellix Grosschartner and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) who piled on top of each other and a couple fans who got a little closer to the racers than anyone wanted.  Vingegaard's teammate Sepp Kuss went down as well, but he was back up almost instantly.  Not so for Vingegaard.  The longer he sat on the roadside, the worse we all knew it was.  When I saw the medical team bring over an arm sling, I knew his Tour was over.  He has never finished worse than second (and has one twice) but this is the first time he has ever crashed out of the Tour.  The peloton slowed and waited to see if he would remount.  Once Del Toro caught back up to Pogacar (who had just barely avoided going down as well) he let the Maillot Jaune know that Vingegaard wasn't coming back.  Once everyone knew, it was back to racing.

Tour '26, Stage 15: What Is the Plan?

That was the question on everyone's mind.  What is Visma-Lease a Bike's plan? Why are they on the front of the peloton driving the pace towards the final climb of the day?  Victor Campenaerts and Bruno Armirail had been called back from the breakaway to help the team pull on the front, Armirail has just swung of leaving Campenaerts to continue pulling as Edoardo Affini and Matteo Jorgenson wait for their turn.  Jonas Vingegaard, back into his team kit, rides with Sepp Kuss on his wheel, ready to enact whatever plan the team his running.  Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) in his Maillot Jaune takes advantage of his main rival's team's work as his teammates support him and Isaac Del Toro.  I am sure they, like the rest of us, are trying to figure out what the guys in black and yellow are up to.  We never did find out, but that is for the next painting.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Racing to the Podium

With Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) having already won the stage, this trio was racing for the remaining two steps of the stage podium.  It could be argued that his teammate Isaac Del Toro, Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) and Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) were also racing for the podium in Paris as well.  The sprint went to Del Toro, followed by Seixas at the same time.  Vingegaard let another six seconds open up between him and the other two.  Plus, they earned small time bonuses for their second and third places.  Seixas also took over the Maillot Blanc of the best younger rider in the Tour, his time bonus helped but he would still be in White tomorrow regardless.  At nineteen years of age, he is the youngest guy to start the Tour de France since 1905!  He is now in fourth, with Del Toro in seventh.  Vingegaard holds his second place but loses more time to Pogacar.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Now He Goes!

After Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) had been isolated others had tried to go on the offensive.  But once everyone was on their own without teammates to aid them, that is when Pogacar took off.  For a few seconds it looked like Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) were going to be able to hold onto the wheel of the Maillot Jaune.  They could not. Behind them in his Maillot Blanc Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek) was finding the pace just too much to handle.  Once he has gone it is very rare that Pogacar is seen again.  Today was no exception.  I wasn't pleased with the camera angles when he won the stage, so this will have to do for his victory painting.  Let's face it, this is when he won the stage.  I do think he has already won the Tour.  Although today he seemed weaker, but then he could have been doing the 'rope a dope' move of feinting weakness in order to get his rivals to over commit.  That may have been what happened to Vingegaard today.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Are You Coming with Me?

While the American Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) tamped out a rhythm on the front of the reduced peloton for his team leader Jonas Vingegaard, others saw an opportunity to attack.  Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) jumped free of the peloton and found he had Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM) on his wheel.  The young Frenchman looked back at the Visma-Lease a Bike guys and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) perhaps surprised that they didn't respond to his attack.  After all, Seixas started the day in fifth place, and the French are convinced he has the capability of winning the Tour soon.  The Maillot a Pois, and the Maillot Jaune were right not to chase, Seixas was soon back in the fold, but his attack dislodge some other pretenders to the throne.

Tour '26, Stage 14: Maintaining

As the peloton containing all of the race favorites climbed the Ballon d'Alsace for the second time this Tour de France, it seems everyone was comfortable to maintain their positions in the general classification.  The group a was being led by the UAE Team Emirates trio of Isaac Del Toro, Felix Grosschartner, and Tadej Pogacar in his Maillot Jaune.  Next in line were Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).  He is wearing the Maillot a Pois on loan from Pogacar since he is in second place in the competition for the King of the Mountains title.  Vingegaard is looking back to his teammate the American Sepp Kuss.  I wonder what the conversation was about.  It is usual Kuss who sets up an attack for Jonas, just as Del Toro does for Tadej.

Tour '26, Stage 10: Anticipating

On the last Category One climb of the day, Tadej Pogacar and his UAE Team Emirates dropped off the front of the reduced peloton.  It led us all to wonder if he was having a rough day.  It was three years ago here that he fell apart and Jonas Vingegaard went on to win the stage (and the Tour). That history may be why Davide Piganzoli (Visma-Lease a Bike) went to the front with Vingegaard on his wheel.  Both Remeco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) and his teammate (team rival) pulled up alongside Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Isaac Del Toro, his teammate wearing the Miallot Blanc. Mixing in with the leaders on the Col du Pertus was Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek).  All were anticipating an attack from the other.  Is Tadej actually cracking or is he taking a play out of Lance Armstrongs playbook and feinting his condition before going on the attack.  The peloton will know soon since we are just two-and-a-half kilometers from the summit.   Remember, there is one guy a minute up the road, too.

Tour '26, Stage 9: What Are They Up To?

It is beyond me why Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) has his team chasing on the front.  Seriously, why are Felix Grosschartner, Brandon McNulty, Adam Yates and Isaac Del Toro buring energy on chasing down a breakaway when the best placed member is almost ten minutes behind him?  Is he setting himself or one of his teammates up for a stage win?  Or perhaps he wants his team to take over the lead in the team competition.  I guess the critics while begin complaining that the team is too greedy again.  Just in case Pogacar makes a move, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) is keeping close to his main rival.  All of the other GC guys are in this group, just out of my sight for this painting.  The peloton has all of the leaders' jerseys, including the Maillot Jaune, the Maillot Blanc, and the Maillot a Pois that we can see now.  But Mads Pedersen in his Maillot Vert is the only sprinter still in the peloton.  Admittedly, he has been dangling a bit everytime the road goes up.

Tour '26, Stage 6: Creating Some Space

With another five kilometers to climb up the Tourmalet, Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) up the pace with his teammate Tadej Pogacar on his wheel.  The two champions opened up a bit of a gap on Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and the youngster Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGM).  Pogacar has had his team on the front for the last fifty kilometers and now it was time to try and drop everyone else and go off the front.  Would the Dane be able to regain his composure and get back to his main rival's wheel?  I think you already know the answer.

Tour '26, Stage 5: Safe in the Peloton

Race commentators will refer to the "commentator's curse," meaning that as soon as they talk about the possibility of something going wrong, it often does.  I feel like this is my "artist curse."  Shortly after painting and titling this watercolor, there was a crash just outside of five kilometers to go that tied up all of those in this painting.  The location is important, if they were inside of five kilometers to go, they would have been given the same time as the finishing time of those they were with.  In this case, that means the time of the entire peloton.  As it happened, the Maillot Jaune of Torstein Traeen (Uno X-Mobility) along with his teammate Tobias Johannessen were able to catch back onto the tail of the peloton as they reached Pau.  In fact, everyone here including Edoardo Affini and his Visma-Lease a Bike teammates Matteo Jorgenson and Jonas Vingegaard along with Nils Politt and his UAE Team Emirates teammate Isaac Del Toro were all given the same time thus saving everyone's position in the general classification.  Naturally, that means the Traeen holds his Maillot Jaune for a second day, only Vingegaard has managed to keep yellow for more than one day thus far this Tour.

Tour '26, Stage 3: Who & When?

Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) were the last two teammates left to the two race favorites Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar. They were separated by only six seconds, so an attack was sure to come as they neared the final kilometer of the stage. Brushing shoulders with the Maillot Jaune was the man starting the day wearing the Maillot Blanc, Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek).  On Pogacar's shoulder was the teammate of the French hopeful, Tiesj Benoot (Decathlon-CMA CGM) guiding Paul Seixas up to the leaders in hopes he could get a jump on the main rivals.  With just over a kilometer to go everyone knew the jump had to come soon.  Question is, who was going to go first?

Tour '26, Stage 3: On to French Soil

It was Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) leading his teammates Nils Politt, Isaac Del Toro, and the rest of the peloton out of Spain and onto French soil for the first time in the 113th Tour de France.  As it has been most of the day, Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) followed by the Maillot Jaune of his teammate Jonas Vingegaard were stuck to the wheels of the UAE Team.  Not far behind is Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) making sure he doesn't miss a move when it comes.  The Tour will remain in France for the remaining eighteen stages.

Tour '26, Stage 2: Well Played

The first person to congratulate Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates) was his team's main rival, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).  I honestly think Del Toro was surprised by the gesture and sportsmanship of the Maillot Jaune.  I should point out that Vingegaard then sought out Pogacar to congratulate him for a well-run race. The two champions embraced before Tadej went in search of his victorious teammate and the rest of the team.  After two stages the top five are only nineteen seconds apart as the peloton returns to France.

Tour '26, Stage 2: Who's Going First?

With just ten kilometers to race all of those that matter have massed at the front of the peloton on the wheel of the Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates).  His team leader Tadej Pogacar in the Maillot a Pois continued to draft off of him as their other teammate Isaac Del Toro (the Mexican Champion) moved up pass Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) in the leader's Maillot Jaune.  Keeping a close eye on the proceeding were the other three main contenders, Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) and Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA CGA).  With only 600 meters to the summit of the penultimate climb all were wondering who was going to attack first.  Oddly, no one did.

Tour '26, Stage 2: Led through by the Americans

The title might be a bit misleading after all there are a total of six Americans in the 113th Tour de France.  But as the peloton came through the finish line for the penultimate time, it was the American Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) leading with his compatriot on a rival team Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) on his wheel.  Jorgenson was followed in turn by the Maillot Jaune on the shoulders of his team leader Jonas Vingegaard.  I think the entire crowd at the side of the road was looking back to see McNulty's leader, Tadej Pogacar, just a few bikes further back.  The second lap of the finishing circuit seemed to be raced to a draw with all of the favorites watching each other for the twelve-kilometer loop through the streets of Barcelona.

Tour '26, Stage 1: Ready to Pounce

I'm not sure that I agree with the general public's choice of the dark jersey for Visma-Lease a Bike.  I had voted for the light-colored kit, but I am rarely on the winning side of most any voting.  However, it was Matteo Jorgenson (Visma-Lease a Bike) putting in one final pull for his team leader Jonas Vingegaard.  Despite having been dropped Davide Piganzoli clawed his way back to the duo.  He was able to give one last pull after Jorgenson swung off.  That may have been enough to get Vingegaard across the line with the best time by eight seconds over the Italian Champion, Filippo Ganna (Netcompany-Ineos).  With that stage win, Vingegaard will start tomorrow in the Maillot Jaune.  Maybe a bit soon to claim the jersey, but it will boost his confidence to have put time into his main rival (and all of the others) after just the first stage of the Tour. Wout Van Aert wasn't able to start the Tour and it was Piganzoli who was a last-minute replacement.  Clearly, he has already earned his spot on the squad.

Tour '25, Stage 21: The Giants of the Tour

Since no one knew how the stage was going to play out, all of the photo-ops were taken during the neutral start before they reached Kilometer Zero.  More than just posing for the cameras, I think that the top three of the Tour actually enjoyed chatting in the sun before they reached Paris and the rain.  The podium goes Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) wins both the Maillot Jaune and the Maillot a Pois currently on loan to Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike).  The Dane takes second for the second year in a row after winning the two years before that.  Pogacar was second both of those times.  Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) won the Maillot Blanc of best young rider and took the third step of the podium.  It should be noted that it was Lipowitz's first Tour.  He only learned that he would be racing the Tour in early June.  The plan was for him to get some experience for the years to come.

Tour '25, Stage 19: The Top Four of the Tour

As the top four places of this Tour de France go under the four kilometer to go banner, they have just one guy yet to catch on their way to the final Alpine summit of the race.  Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) had tried to drop everyone in hopes of winning one more stage in his Maillot Jaune.  This time he couldn't get rid of Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) who is wearing Tadej's Maillot a Pois.  On Vingegaard's wheel is the man in fourth overall, Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL).  He is being closely watched by Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) who is in the Maillot Blanc of best young rider.  He just as twenty-one seconds on Onley in both the GC and the race for the White Jersey.

Tour '25, Stage 19: Shelter from the Devil

I don't think I have ever seen Didi Stenft (aka 'The Devil') hold anything besides his trident before, but then the final climb has been rather raining most of the day.  I imagine that the publicity caravan handed that umbrella to him several hours earlier.  I was playing around with the idea for the title and then this variation of sheltering from the devil occurred to me.  I found it amusing, I hope you do, too.  These five were chasing just one man up the road by a half of a minute. Felix Gall (Decathlon-Ag2r-La Mondiale) was setting the pace in hopes of moving up the general classification.  Everyone else was watching their nearest competitors in a defensive slosh up to La Plagne.  Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) was closely watched by Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike), one in the Maillot Jaune and the other in the Maillot a Pois.  Behind it was a battle for the final possession of the Maillot Blanc of best young rider.  The jersey is currently on the shoulders of Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) who is also third on the GC.  He has a twenty-one second advantage over the man in front of him in both the GC and the Maillot Blanc, Oscar Onley (Picnic-PostNL).  The fact that these two young guys are stuck to the wheels of the best two riders in modern cycling speaks of great battles yet to come.

Tour '25, Stage 19: On to the Final Mountain

This is the last mountain stage of this Tour and the peloton of the elite are just now hitting the final climb in the Alps.  Well, actually, the final HC climb of this years' Tour de France.  Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates) looks back to make sure his team leader, Tadej Pogacar is still on his wheel.  He is.  Right on the wheel of the Maillot Jaune is Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) wearing the Maillot a Pois on loan from Pogacar.  Vingegaard has little hope of pulling back over four minutes to move into first, conversely, he has little worry that anyone will pull back over four minutes on him either.  The final step of the podium is a different matter altogether.  Massing behind are Aurelien Paret-Peintre (Decathlon-Ag2r-La Mondiale) riding for his team leader, Tobias Johannessen (Uno X-Mobility), and Ben Healy (EF Education-EasyPost).  The stage ends at the top of this climb up La Plagne, so the final podium will be much clearer at the top in about eighteen kilometers.
