The Art of Cycling Ad 2

About the Artist: Greig Leach

Greig Leach is a widely exhibited and collected artist with works represented in the permanent collection of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Vatican, and innumerable private and corporate collections throughout the United States and abroad. He is a past recipient of a Virginia Museum Professional Artist Fellowship, a former Visiting Artist to the American Academy in Rome, a former Artist-in-Residence for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Leach has combined his love of cycling (he raced amateur in the 70s) with his passion for painting the figure in motion since he followed his wife’s advice, the actress Bridget Gethins, suggestion and began painting the Tour de France live in 2012. He captures the story and beauty of the racing in quick ink and watercolor postcard size paintings, sharing them through social media and making them available for purchase on his website at www.greigleach.com both as original and, occasionally, as on-demand digital prints. You can follow direct links at each post on the blog. In 2014 he published his first cycling art book, “Book du Tour: Art of the 101st Tour de France.” In September of 2015, Leach was the official artist for the Richmond 2015 UCI Road World Championships creating his signature cycling watercolors live onsite as the racing took place on the streets of Richmond, Virginia. Unique to the Richmond races, fans of art and of cycling from around the world were able to watch as he created the artwork in person. They were also able to buy either originals or prints as the racing was being contested outside of the Fan Zone. This is an opportunity he still hopes to re-create in the future. The project was covered by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, NBC-12 (the local NBC affiliate) and by BBC Sports which aired throughout Europe. From 2017 until 2024 and hopefully again in 2026, NBC/Universal has shared his time-lapse videos on air during their coverage of the Tour. It has been a great honor to have Phil Liggett and Bob Roll talk about my cycling art during their Tour coverage.

You have obviously found my cycling blog (to which I hope you will subscribe). You can find more of my artwork at my website and on social media including Instagram, YouTube, BlueSky, X and TikTok
