Tour '26, Stage 21: Attacking and Giggling

Just after Lidl-Trek had their photo op on the front of the peloton as they rode back onto the Place de la Concorde, Quinn Simmons in his USA Champion kit and Mathias Vacek in his Czech Champion kit decided to mime attacking the peloton.  It wasn't out of character for the two to attack, but laughing as they did it was.  Since their teammate in the Maillot Vert, Mads Pedersen, was reacting it was clear they were just goofing around.  It won't be long before the racing starts in earnest.  I should note that Simmons started the day with his hair flowing, so it is unlikely he is planning on going for stage honors.  That task will fall to Pedersen and the team will do their best to make it happen.

Tour '26, Stage 19: Is It Enough?

After the two categorized climbs and ninety kilometers it was finally time for Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) to go for the maximum sprint points on offer at the intermediate sprint in Le Perier.  He was led out by his teammate the Czech Champion Mathias Vacek.  Michael Matthews (Jayco-Alula) gave what felt like a token sprint and then congratulated Pedersen with a handshake and a hug (while on their bikes) afterwards.  With these additional twenty-five points towards his Maillot Vert it feels like he has sealed up the win in the sprinter's prize.  It is still mathematically possible for Jasper Philipsen to catch him, but he would have to win either both sprints tomorrow and/or the more difficult intermediate sprint tomorrow and win on the Champs Elysees.  And Pedersen has to not score any more points in any of those ensuing sprints.  Matthews congratulations implied that he thought the Green Jersey was the Dane's.

Tour '26, Stage 18: One More Peek

After three categorized climbs and just shy of one hundred and forty kilometers, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) was finally able to sprint for the maximum sprint points on offer in Corps.  As he did his almost token sprint, he looked back one more time to make sure no one would dare challenge him.  They did not.  Had they done so the breakaway would have collapse right then.  Mauro Schmid (Jayco-Alula), Tobias Johannessen (Uno X-Mobility) his teammate Mathias Vacek and the rest of the breakaway have been counting on the Dane's power to help keep them off the front and away from those chasing behind.  Now, what will happen now that Pedersen has achieved his goal for the day.  I suspect he will help Vacek as much as possible before he runs out of steam.

Tour '26, Stage 18: Scooping Up All the Points

The third categorized climb of the day was the Cote des Terrasse, and it was the third climb that Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-Quick Step) got the maximum King of the Mountain points at the summit of.  He out sprinted Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) yet again.  Behind them were the Lidl-Trek teammates, Mathias Vacek and Mads Pedersen.  Why that is important is that Pedersen is wearing the Maillot Vert of the best sprinter in the Tour.  Sprinters are known for their climbing abilities, but here he is with the leaders on a mountain stage.  Of course, the intermediate sprint is another twenty-four kilometers down the road.  His main competitor in the sprint competition is behind the peloton in the grupetto about ten minutes behind the breakaway.

Tour '26, Stage 18: The Points Are Up the Road

As this five-some climbed the Cote de Monteynard they were chasing a group of six that had twenty-one seconds on them.  Not a situation that either Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal-Quick Step) nor Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) were happy with.  Both men were hoping to take over the lead in the King of the Mountains competition.  Yes, Paret-Peintre is wearing the jersey, but it is "on loan" from the race leader, Tadej Pogacar.  The Soudal-Quick Step rider has already gone first over the first climb of the day, out sprinting Carapaz for the maximum KOM points.  The other three were happy to ride behind the aggressors.  Mauro Schmid (Jayco-Alula), Raul Garcia Pierna (Movistar) and Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) were happy to let the other two pull them up to the leading breakaway.  Both Vacek and Pierna had teammates up the road, so there were going to, nor were they expected to, work to chase down the leaders.  I should note that they did join up before the summit with Paret-Peintre getting the maximum KOM points ahead of Carapaz, again.

Tour '26, Stage 4: Down the Back

The story of today is the very large breakaway that got off the front of the peloton today.  At one point there were 34 men in the escape group representing all by five teams that started the Tour in Barcelona.  It was nice to see the tri-colore of the French Champion Romain Gregoire (Groupama FDJ-United).  He was hanging around the back of the group with his countryman Kevin Vauquelin (Netcompany-Ineos), the Czech Champion Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek), Nelson Oliviera (Movistar), and Michael Matthews (Jayco-Alula).  The group has built up just over five-and-a-half minutes on the peloton containing all of the race favorites.  It feels like the peloton is taking a big risk, but then the two guys that are currently in the virtual first and second places are not realistic threats to carry the Maillot Jaune all of the way to Paris.  Given that UAE Team Emirates chased down yesterday's breakaway (and got a lot of grief online about that) it remains to be seen if they will pull this group back.  Conversely, this many members of the break will make it difficult to reel them back in if they don't start chasing soon.
