Tour, Stage 19: I'm Not Amused
Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) was not remotely amused by the decision to neutralized the stage at the top of the previous climb. Alaphilippe was dropped on the climb, but was already pulling back time on the descent. It will be argued for years about whether he could have pulled back enough time to save his Maillot Jaune, but now, we will never know. He will be roughly 30 seconds off of the lead with just one real day of racing left to go. It is traditional to not attack the race leader on the roads into Paris. As wild as the end of this Tour is going, even that may fall to the whims of fate in this Tour. Yesterday, the French were riding high, but today it all went wrong. At least Romain Bardet (Ag2r La Mondiale) still holds the Maillot a Pois.

Tour, Stage 19: No, Honestly
The 19th stage of the Tour was neutralized as the peloton sped down the back side of the Col de l'Iseran. It took awhile for the message to get through to the men on the road. Apparently, Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott) knew ahead of Egan Bernal (Ineos). It seemed that the young Colombian was skeptical of what the Brit was telling him. Shortly after I painted this, you could see Bernal on his radio getting the news. What they couldn't see was that there was a very bad hail storm in the valley before the final climb of the day. From aerial shots, snow plows and front loaders were desperately trying to clear the road, but the water run off was way too dangerous. They could have resumed the race at the foot of the final climb, but getting everyone to that point may have proved impossible. Instead, since the stage was to be a mountain top finish anyway, they decided to make the finish at the top of the mountain they had just surrmounted.

Tour, Stage 19: Who Knew?
After his teammate, Geraint Thomas (Ineos) had been pulled back, it was Egan Bernal who attacked next. His attack stuck. He was able to drop everyone near the summit of the Col de l"iseran and go over the top alone. This was a bonus climb giving Bernal an extra eight seconds over the Maillot Jaune. At the time he went over the top, no one yet knew what the weather had in store in the valley. So a bit later, this was determined to be the end of the stage, meaning Bernal will be trading his Maillot Blanc for a Maillot Jaune. I'm guessing he would have been able to hold a minute and a half on Alaphilippe up the final climb, but I am equally sure the Frenchman would have come close to catching the Colombian on the way down this climb.

Tour, Stage 19: Fighting to Stay in Yellow
The entire country of France, and most of the cycling world, has been waiting to see if Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) could hold onto the Maillot Jaune in the Alps. Today the one two punch from Team Ineos put him in difficulty on the final kilometers on the HC Catagory climb of the Col de l'Iseran. Yesterday, he got dropped a little closer to the top of the HC climb, but was able to rejoin on the descent. I am sure he was pushing himself to the limit to repeat the feat today. The final climb of the day shouldn't be too severe for his abilities, so for now he just needed to limit his loses. No one knew what was going to happen in the valley below.

Tour, Stage 19: Did It Work?
Team Ineos had been driving the pace all day, as they hit the slopes of the Col de l'Iseran, it was defending champion, Geraint Thomas who launched the first attack of the Maillot Jaune. He looked over his shoulder to see what damage he had managed. What he saw was Gregor Mulhberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) bringing his team leader, Emanuel Buchmann, along with Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) back up to his wheel. Ineos had more than one card to play, so it seemed that Thomas was the sacrifice for his teammate to take over the Yellow Jersey.
