Tour Down Under, Stage 6: All Working Together

The early break away finally got established and set about working together to build a three and a half minute lead over the following peloton.  At this point Franck Bonnamour (Decathlon-Ag2r-Mondale) was slipping off the front as the veteran Simon Gerschler (Cofidis) prepares to take over the pace making duties for the seven allies.  Behind Geschke is Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek).  Maurice Ballerstedt (Alpecin-Deceuninck) had finished his turn on front and was sliding to the back to get a bit of rest before rolling through again.  Later Ballerstedt stopped taking turns and just hung onto the back of the group, perhaps feeling the kilometers they had already ridden this week building up in his legs.

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available through my website at greigleach.com or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of the post to purchase the painting above. Since it is an original work of art, it is a first come first served reality. The painting was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.Richesonart.com. The work sells for $95 USD including shipping, but yes international shipping is both available and extra.

Tour Down Under, Stage 6: Not Letting Anyone Go

It was a constant escape and catch up the first climb in the opening kilometers of the final stage of the Tour Down Under. The duo of Jacopo Mosca (Lidl-Trek) and Stefan De Bod (EF Education-EasyPost) did finally manage to slip the grip of the peloton on the descent of the Windy Point climb.  As they pressed on, Gil Gelders (Soudal-Quick Step) can be seen bridging up from the peloton.  The trio was eventually joined by four more hopefuls out to the peloton.  The stage ends with three climbs up to the top of Mount Lofty, so any chance of getting an early start on the climbers had to be worth the effort.

Giro, Stage 14: Turn Left and Climb

My life got a little busy and I wasn't able to watch nor paint stages 12 and 13.  Between work and being honored by my former high school for a life lived in the arts there just wasn't enough time.  I spend quite a few hours a day watching, painting and writing this blog.  So there are times when life takes over.  So picking up where I left off...

As the title implies, today's stage was about climbing.  This six man break is turning on to the second of five catagorized climbs.  Leading them up the Avaglio climb was yet another rider from Androni-Giocattoli, Francesco Gavazzi.  Joining the Italian, was Matteo Montaguti (Ag2r La Mondiale), Jacopo Musca (Wilier Triestina), Enrico Barbin (Bardiani CSF), Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and his teammate, Laurent Didier.  The group managed to put six minutes into the peloton, not that it is enough time considering just how tough the second half of stage 14 is.

Giro, Stage 4: Well Played

The three surviving members of the early break, took the opportunity to shake hads as they neared the 15 K to go banner.  After prying out a five minute gap on the peloton over the preceeding 183 kilometers, it was now just a couple of seconds until they would be re-absorbed by the chasing peloton.  It is always a long shot that a break will work out, but it is always worth the attempt.

Giro, Stage 4: Sorry About That

The race had it's required early break away, a group of five that included the Maglia Azzurro along with Jacopo Mosca (Wilier Triestina-Selle Italia), Marco Frapporti (Androni Giocattoli-Spidermac) and Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin).  Apparently Frapporti had a touch of wheels with the Russian Belkov - or some other incident (it happened off camera so who knows what actually happened).  The Italian made sure to apologize or at least explain what happened, knowing full well that the group was going to have to work together to stay away from the peloton all the way to Caltagirone.
