Tour '22, Stage 16: You Wouldn't Dare!

Perhaps Simon Geschke (Cofidis) had seen someone attack Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) when they weren't even in the Maillot Vert competition, or perhaps he was just making sure no one would challenge him.  He may even have thought that Van Aert would exact a kind of revenge for the intermediate sprint by stealing points from Geschke.  Watching it all was another of the young Amerians in this Tour, Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar).  In the end, no one sprinted to the top, so Geschke added to his point total in the King of the Mountains competition.  He has held the Maillot a Pois much longer than even he thought he would.  With just two more days of big mountains (and big points) he has a chance to keep it all of the way to Paris.

Tour, Stage 15: Who's Coming?

The break took quite a long time to get established today, and it was rather large once it did.  The peloton was looking at three catagory one climbs, the final being a mountain top finish.  Given what played out on the Tourmalet yesterday, it was looking like it would be another decisive day.  On the first of the big climbs, the Port de Lers, it was Alexey Lutsenko (Astana) looking back over his shoulder to see who was following his attack.  On his left shoulder was Julien Bernard (Trek-Segafredo) and behind him were Sebastien Reichenbach and Rudy Mollard both on Groupama-FDJ.  All for were in the break to be able to help their team leaders on the final climb of the day.  Should the leaders not bridge up to them, then they could race for stage honors for their respective teams.

Tour de France, Stage 12: Three Away

Using the descent from the previous climb, this trio left there fellow breakaway companions behind.  When a break gets to be too big there can often be too many passengers (those who don't contribute to the work of breaking the wind).  Michal Kwiatkowski (Etixx Quickstep) looking grand in his Rainbow Jersey of the World Road Racing Champion, was joined by the KOM point seeking Georg Preidler (Giant Alpecin) and the Classics rider (who was doing amazing in the high mountains), Sep Vanmarcke (LottoNL Jumbo).  They were being given the time gap back to there former compatriots and the peloton by the LCL sponsored time keepers and the slate board tally.  These three were putting time into all of the others as they started up the slopes of the Category 1 Port de Lers.
