Wollongong 2022, Mixed Team Relay: Setting It Up for the Women

Stefan Kung and Stefan Disseger were the two men who came together to the line for Switzerland.  The duo of Stefans posted the best time at the finish of the men's lap.  Since the time is taken on the second man to cross the line, it was not a problem that only two of the three finished together.  This duo was handing over a sixteen second advantage to the trio of Swiss women.  And it was a very strong line up of women that are just now waiting for the green light to start their race through the streets of Wollongong.

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available through my website at greigleach.com or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of the post to purchase the painting above. Since it is an original work of art, it is a first come first served reality. The painting was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.Richesonart.com. The work sells for $90 USD including shipping, and yes, international shipping is available.

If you can't afford to purchase a piece you could always help keep me going by buying me a cup of coffee at buymeacoffee.com/greigsartc.  And check out my vlogs at my YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCLGX-TnjXDSkkOidUE6pN1g

Rio Olympics: Touche

I had fun way back in Community College when I got to take a fencing class for my physical education credit.  I was already racing bicycles, so I didn't pursue the sport any further, but it is one of those obscure sports that I truly enjoy.  Back then so was bicycle racing in the United States.  B. Steffen (Switzerland) is scoring with a "touche" on his rival Sangyoung Park (South Korea).  The match went the other way however, with Park moving on to the Gold Metal bout, with Steffen left to the Bronze.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Tour, Stage 16: Another Photo Finish

It is stunning to thing that after racing 209 kilometers, the winner of the race is a matter of two or three centimeters, maybe less.  While everyone hoped that the day would go to Fabian Cancellara (Trek-Segafredo) who lives in Bern and is racing his final Tour de France, no gifts are giving in professional cycling.  Alexander Kristoff (Katusha) who was still looking for his first stage when in this Tour de France was just beaten by Peter Sagan's (Tinkoff) bike throw to the line.  This is Sagan's third stage victory matching his Tour debute in 2012.  Cancellara managed a sixth place, but you can only see his shoulder in this painting (again I am limited by what the broadcasts provide).  John Degenkolb (Etixx-Quickstep) grabbed fourth proving his return to form after the horrific training accident this spring.  Micheal Matthews (Orica-BikeExchange) held on for fifth although I am sure he would have preferred to repeat his earlier stage victory.  Edvald Boasson Hagen (Dimension Data) had hoped to take the stage for his South African team on this, Nelson Mandela Day.  Unfortunately ninth on the stage was the best he could manage.  The cobbled climb at just two kilometers left to go proved too much for many sprinters (and others).  Sagan, however, won his Rainbow Jersey on a pair of cobbled climbs in Richmond, Virginia, both steeper than today's finale.

Tour, Stage 16: Costa Counters

When the peloton finally caught up with first Julian Alaphilippe (Etixx-Quickstep) it was on the only categorized climb of the day.  It took another five kilometers to catch his teammate, Tony Martin.  The problem was that they caught the two teammates too soon.  Usually, the teams of the sprinters will wait until 10 or 15 kilometers left to race.  The reason: to prevent attacks from other opportunistic aggressive riders.  With the catch coming before the 20 K banner, sure enough it was Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida) who jumped clear of the peloton.  The former World Champion hoped to hold off the chase through the narrow twisting cobbled roads of Bern.  But there were far too many sprinters and puncheurs who had yet to claim a stage to let this move go to the line.  Spoiler alert, he did manage to stave off the inevitable for just over 15 kilometers.

Hour Record: Almost Home

Jens Voigt, as he reached the final fifteen minutes of his effort, actually began to turn in even faster laps.  He, and his coaches, had worked out that he needed to keep turning laps under 18 seconds for the total 199 laps it would take to tie the record.  With the hour almost over, he had sped up from 17.5 seconds to a couple that were less than 17.  After the very first lap, that included getting the single big gear to turn over, he never once went over 17.9 seconds with most laps logging in below 17.5.  Not bad for the old man of our beloved sport!  This is a small original watercolor and ink painting that is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Dauphine Stage 7: Over the Top

Yury Trofimov (Katusha) went on the offensive on the Col de la Forclez, he was the first over the top of the climb and the first to ride out of France into Switzerland.  Katusha has been wrapping up their trip to the Dauphine very nicely having grapped two stage wins, one going to Trofimov just three days ago.  It looks like the plan was to make it three wins at the end of the day.  While he picked up maximum points in the King of the Mountains competition, Alessandro De Marchi padded his lead on the earlier climbs of the stage (prior to TV coverage) pretty much insuring his holding the Polka Dot jersey through the final day of racing.  This is an original small watercolor and ink painting (4"x6") that could be yours by visiting my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting, just follow the direct link at the end of this post to get your piece of the 66th Criterium du Dauphine.  And yes, I do ship anywhere in the world.

Criterium du Dauphine Stage One: Peloton Going Up

The peloton let the leading break away get over 10 minutes up the road in the first stage of the Dauphine at that point two of the teams of the main contenders, came to the front to set about chasing them down.  Moviestar and Team Sky must feel they have the best chances for winning the Yellow Jersey, or at least they were willing to do the work to catch the break.  As rare as it is for a break to work, this was a day where it paid off for at least one of those up the road.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard and is available through my artist website.  Just follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Criterium du Dauphine Stage One: 10 Minutes in Hand

This is the first of my paintings of the Criterium du Dauphine, and this, of course, is the break away of the day.  As in most every stage of the Giro, a small group of riders jumped away from the peloton almost as soon as the racing began.  The group of four is made up of Veilleux of Europcar, Damuseau of Argos-Shimano, Bideau of Team Bretagne and Ambroa of Euskatdel/Euskadi.  The break got over ten minutes on the peloton before it realized that no one yet had the yellow jersey.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard created using cake watercolors, brushes and paper from www.richesonart.com they make fabulous supplies at great prices.  This work, and all of the paintings that I will be doing of the Dauphine, will be available for purchase through my artist website.  Just follow the direct link at the end of this post.
