2026 UCI Road Worlds Championship, Montreal, Elite Men's Road Race

Purchase this painting here: "How Am I Doing? UCI26-10" (Original art by Greig Leach)

Once the peloton, or what was left of it, caught the morning breakaway, Anthon Charmig (Denmark) decided it was his turn to try.  With 95 kilometers to race, he was taking a risk trying to go it alone.  After building up an eight second advantage, he looked back to see if anyone was going to join him in the effort.  Going solo left little chance of success, but if a couple of others bridged up to the Dane, he then may well have a chance to claim the Rainbow jersey.

2026 UCI Road World Championships, Montreal; Elite Women's Road Race: Making Her Escape

Purchase this painting here: "Making Her Escape UCI26-3" (Original art by Greig Leach)

Once the peloton had caught the last of the breakaway, it was the French woman Maeva Squiban that went on the attack on the climb of Mont Royal above Montreal.  With 52 kilometers to race, it was a long shot (or a long solo effort) that she might be able to stay away to the line.  She has done this before in the Tour de France Femmes.  I am sure it felt good to race on roads where most of the fans also speak French.  She was caught when some of the favorites launched their attacks.

Tour '26, Stage 10: Flying Down the Other Side

Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) jumped out of the peloton on the way up the Puy Mary.  He built up a minute on the group of favorites as he went over the top of the climb at the Pas de Peyol.  Carapaz continued to add to his advantage in the rather scary descent down the other side of the volcano.  Would he be able to take this advantage to the finale in just twenty-six kilometers?  It really depends on what happens between the main GC rivals now a minute behind the former Colombian champion,

Tour '26, Stage 6: By How Much?

Not long after the attacked, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) went off on his own.  As he neared the summit of the Col du Tourmalet, he looked back to see just how much of a gap he had on his rivals back down the mountain.  Between the distance and the throngs of fans lining every inch of the road, he couldn't see any of his chasers.  At this point he had twenty seconds on Jonas Vingegaard and a minute on Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) who has teamed up with Paul Seixas (Decathlon-CMA-CGM).  The title of this painting is the question of the Tour.  It seems clear that he will win the stage, and perhaps the Tour, the only question is by how many minutes by the time we all reach Paris?

Tour Femmes '25, Stage 9: Over the Top Alone

Anna Van Der Breggan (SD Worx-Protime) has been off the front since the early kilometers of the final stage of the Tour de France Femmes.  As she went over the summit of the Col de Joux Plane she still had forty-three seconds over a very motivated group of chasers.  They chased hard down the otherside trying to drop some of those ahead of them in the general classification.  While they weren't chasing her per se, they did catch her on the final climb twenty-three kilometers later.

Tour Femmes '25, Stage 7: Off the Front, Again

Maud Rijnbeek (VolkerWessels Cycling) had been dropped on the way up the Cote de Berland, but that didn't mean she was done for the day.  She chased done her former companions on the descent.  Once she caught them, she attacked immediately.  She quickly opened up a lead of twenty-six seconds.  She had gone on a similar raid in the first stage of this Tour de France Femmes, I guess she thought it was about time to go again.  Unfortunately for her there is one more climb before the finish in Chamberey.

Tour Femmes '25, Stage 6: Flying Home

Actually, today's stage started in Maeva Squiban's (UAE Team ADQ) hometown of Clermont Ferrand, so the title should be, "Flying Away from Home."  Squiban escaped the lead peloton before the bonus sprint on the way up the Col du Chansert.  She climbed well over the last climb, but, boy, she went down that hill fast!  Her team has lost three of her seven teammates, so I believe she is on a mission to bring a little joy to the team bus waiting in Amberet.

Tour Femmes '25. Stage 2: Out of Sight

Mavi Garcia (Liv-Alula-Jayco) used a lull on the front of the peloton once the breakaway had been caught to launch her solo attack.  She used her climb prowess to go on a rise.  She quickly opened up an eighteen second gap on those behind who seemed unsure who was responsible to chase the lone escapee down.  As she started up the Cote du Chemin de Troheir for the final time, she saw no one chasing as she peeked back over her shoulder.  It is a long shot to think she can hold them off for just over another six kilometers, but it is mainly uphill to the finish in Quimper.

Tour '25, Stage 20: Alone with 5K to Go

Not wanting to leave it to a sprint, Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) timed his attack on his two breakaway companions perfectly.  As he went, they looked each to the other to do the chase.  That was all the hesitation that the Australian needed to fly to the finish alone.  As he went under the 5K banner, he had forty-seven seconds on the lone chaser and a minute and ten seconds to a group of eight more.  Given how he is going I doubt anyone will see him until the podium presentations in Pontarlier.  The peloton containing all of the leaders' jerseys was over six minutes back down the soggy road playing it safe.

Tour '25, Stage 17: Making a Well-Timed Attack

It usually is a bad sign if you have to explain a joke, but that is the case with this title. (unless you get it).  Tissot is a watch company that is also responsible for all of the race timing at the Tour de France and many other sporting events.  Once the peloton had gotten close to the break, Wout Van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) jumped free of the peloton in a quest to join up with the four-man break up the road.  Wout got withing twenty seconds, but not further.  After about five kilometers off the front he was reeled back in by the group chasing behind.  I think the sprinter's teams were confident that they could catch the break that had been out in the front all day, but a strong man like Van Aert with fresh legs may well be a very different matter.

Tour '25, Stage 16: Holding His Own

Not long after the previous painting, Simone Velasco went backwards, and Enric Mas (Movistar) jumped clear of his former companions.  At eleven kilometers to climb he had built a thirty second lead over the two still chasing and was holding the Yellow Jersey group to five and a half minutes.  I should point out that the guy watching from the side of the road in the polka dot t-shirt is just pulling his hands out of his pockets to applaud the Spanish climber.  I am amused that the woman in pink was too busy looking at her phone to see the beginning of the race go pass.  Will Mas be able to give Spain its first Tour victory in two years?

Tour '25, Stage 15: He Caught Them Napping

Using Phil Liggett's expression, Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) in his Belgium Champion's jersey had been sitting on the back of the breakaway for most of the day.  He was playing 'I am here to help my team leader should it become necessary' card and refusing to pull through in the effort to add more of an advantage in the escape attempt.  When the group was finally joined by the four that had been chasing, he saw it as his chance to surprise everyone on a little rise.  Attacking from the back, he was already at full speed before the others realized he was going.  The first to try and catch him were those who had just worked hard to catch on.  After a few minutes, it was clear no one was going to be able to hold his much fresher wheel.  With forty kilometers to go it was literally a long shot that he could hold off all of the chasers solo, but that wasn't going to deter him.  He had done much the same thing to earn the tricolore Belgium Champion jersey the weekend before the Tour started.

Tour '25, Stage 10: Off on His Own

Unhappy with the pace of the early breakaway, Ben O'Connor (Jayco-Alula) went off the front on his own.  With 93 kilometers yet to race, he was using the Cote de Charade to stretch his legs, and the grip of the peloton.  I am sure it is too far for the Australian on an Australian team to go solo to the finish.  I suppose, he was hoping a couple of those behind would join him in this effort.

Paris Roubaix Femmes '25: Alone on Sector 6

It was Emma Norsgaard (Lidl-Trek) who hit the three-star sector six alone.  The Norwegian has built up a twenty second lead on the chasing favorites (although she can count herself as one of those favorites as well).  With her time trialing capabilities, she would prove a difficult woman to track down from behind.  She has just another twenty-four kilometers to go.  Will she have the stamina to race alone over the cobbles to come solo onto the velodrome in Roubaix?

Gent-Wevelgem '25: Going on the Kemmelberg

After having bridged up to the early breakaway, it was Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) who used the final climb of the Kemmelberg to drop them.  You know by his bib #1 that he is the defending champion of Gent-Wevelgem.  He clearly had the legs to stage a great defense of that title with another fifty-six kilometers to race.  It is a bit of a tall order to go solo from this far out, but he has shown the form to make me believe it may just be possible.

Paris Nice '25, Stage 7: On His Own

After a very hard pull by his teammate Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling) pulled off the front of the breakaway, it was Michael Storer's chance to lay a hard attack.  Once inside the final two kilometers, Storer looked back across the snow-covered corner to make sure no one was bridging back up to him.  Since there is no racing descent off of this climb, the organizers weren't worry that it may well start snowing again.  As he peered back, he wouldn't have seen any of the main chase group, he has almost a minute and a half on them.  I was struck by his choice to just wear a speed suit for this final ascent up to the Auron ski slopes.

Paris Nice '25, Stage 5: Alone, Again

As I mentioned in my previous post, Tobias Foss (Ineos-Grenadiers) jumped free of the peloton to join his teammate Ben Swift and Swift's breakaway companion.  When the trio hit the base of the penultimate climb of the day, Foss went off on a long solo run to the finish.  So, for the second day in a row, this former Norwegian champion was making a brave effort to win on his own ahead of a chasing peloton.  Alas, just like yesterday, he was caught (and dropped) on the final climb up to a summit finish.  He ended up finishing around 35th on the stage, a minute and three-quarters behind the stage winner.  Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Paris Nice '25, Stage 2: Not Giving Up

With the peloton just seconds behind the breakaway changed quickly.  First the Polka Dot Jersey of Alexandre Delettre sat up and went back into the field having achieved his objective for the day fifty kilometers ago.  Next Samuel Fernandez attacked Jonas Abrahamsen (Uno X-Moblity) in a bid to be the most aggressive rider on the day.  He must not have remembered Abrahamsen's exploits in last year's Tour de France. The Norwegian caught and dropped his erstwhile companion and road off on his own with another 51 kilometers to race.  The peloton didn't catch him until just two and a half kilometers to go.

Women's Tour Down Under '25, Stage 1: Another to Roll the Dice

Shortly after the peloton went over the only catagorized climb of Stage One of the Tour Down Under, it was Daniek Hengeveld (Ceratizit) who went off on a solo attack.  At first, the peloton only gave her a few seconds so her effort looked to be in vain.  However, they seemed to have underestimated her strength and resolve.  At this point she has two minutes on the rest of the Tour.  With another twenty-seven kilometers left to ride it was a bit of a roll of the dice whether this effort would pay dividends.  Spoiler, the peloton never saw the Dutch woman again.  Hengeveld will be starting stage two in the Ochre Jersey of race leader with about thirty seconds in hand.

Tour de France Femmes '24, Stage 4: Slipped Away Over the Top

Justine Ghekiere (AG Insurance-Soudal) went for the Queen of the Mountain points over the top of the Cote des Forges.  As she claimed the maximum points she realized that she had a gap on the peloton.  As they looked at each other, she decided to see just how much time she could put into them in the closing kilometers of the stage.  As she went under the 20 kilometers to go banner she had built up a twenty-two second lead on the group of favorites behind.  She has one more Category 2 climb yet on the horizon, so she has a chance if those behind start looking at each other and don't chase.  Unfortunately for her, the women behind decided each would try to drop the other and in so doing caught her on the final climb up the Cote de la Roche aux Faucons.
