Paris Olympics 2024, Track and Field Men's Javelin Throw: Outta Here

The Javelin Throw is such a very specific Olympic discipline.  I can see it being vital when the Games began in ancient Greece, but now... not so much.  Regardless, having faulted in his first throw, Arshad Nadeem (Pakistan) let fly with a huge throw of almost 95 meters.  For those unversed in metric, that is over the length of an American football field.  He didn't throw that far again in his ensuing attempts, but it was more than enough for the Gold Medal.  It was the first and thus far only medal for Pakistan.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Surfing: The Perfect Wave

It was Caroline Marks (USA) who had the Gold Medal winning ride in the unique waves off the coast of Tahiti.  It was the pile of skulls at Teahupo'o provided the perfect and consistantly similar waves for these Olympics.  They almost seemed man made in their uniformity.  The Olympics next move to the United States in Los Angles.  I guess we will be looking at some California surfing, or perhaps they will take a page out of the French playbook and go to Hawaii for the surfing competition.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Surfing: Turning Out Gold

Not only is Kauli Vaast and French citizen, he is a resident of Tahiti, the very beach where the Olympic surfing events were held.  It may be the local knowledge, or it may be a life surrounded by the sea, but whatever it was it gave him the ability to win Gold in Men's Surfing.  At this point he is turning out of the wave after his gold medal winning ride.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Greco-Roman Wrestling: Powering to Gold

The Gold Medal Match in Women's Greco-Roman Wrestling pitted the young American Amit Elor (USA) against Meerim Zhumanazarova (Kyrgyzstan).  Kyrgyzstan has never won a gold medal in this event, so I am sure she felt the pressure to perform.  Elor got the early two points for a take down and then towards the end of the first round she got another point for Meerim's inactivity.  That was all of the points scored which gave the Gold Medal to Elor and the Silver to Zhumanzsarova.  It was fun to watch the American gambol around the mat waving the American flag behind her like a cape.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Hammer Throw: A Silver Medal Throw!

I got a bit overwhelmed with painting the Olympics, so after the Men's and Women's road races, I've decided to paint from various high lights in hopes of not burning myself out.  That being said, it is back into the Track & Field for the newly minted American Annette Nneka Echikumwoke (USA) and her medal winning hammer throw.  She has recently gained US citizenship coming from Ethiopia.  Her first of three throws was enough to put her in medal contention, but she was out thrown in the end by her Canadian competitor.  Still, an Olympic Silver Medal is quite the achievement.  Welcome to the USA, Annette.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Team Fencing - Foil: A Golden Touch

I do enjoy how NBC opens their primetime coverage of the Olympics with a perfect moment of Team USA winning a gold medal.  Tonight it was L. Scruggs (USA) scoring the winning touche against A. Errigo (Italy) to give her team the Gold Medal.  Naturally, it is Italy winning the Silver.  I love this sport having had the chance to learn it in Junior College so very many years ago.  Side note, Scruggs is currently a student at Harvard.  I will never measure up to either her academic prowess or her physical prowess.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around: Not the Man They Were Expecting

When the defending Olympic Gold Medalist faltered it was his teammate Shinnosuke Oka (Japan) who rose to the occasion.  He had been posting excellent scores and was benefiting from others earlier misfortunes as well.  As he finished his final rotation on the Parallel Bars, he knew he had a medal.  Now he just has to wait for Zhang Boheng (China) to finish his High Bar routine to discover what color it would be.  I'll jump ahead to let you know that Zhang's score was not enough to overtake Oka, so it is Gold for Japan.  He is now a team gold medalist and an individual gold medalist in the men's gymnastics all around.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around: Extreme Effort

There are many stories at the Olympics of athletes going through all sorts of struggles to get to the Olympics.  One that speaks to me is what those from the Ukraine have had to endure just to be able to be present let alone competitive.  But that is exactly Oleg Verniaiev (Ukraine).  He has returned from war in his country, a ban from competitive sports, and is now in his third Olympics having missed the Tokyo Games because of the suspension.  But here he is leading after each rotation and finishing eighth on the day.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around: With Precision

The American Paul Juda (USA) has built his gymnastics career on his precise movements over the high difficulty.  It is a strategy that has served him well and made him a joy to watch.  His problem is that others can be almost as flawless as he, but they are doing far more difficult routines.  He did well and finished fourteenth, just once spot ahead of his countryman Frederick Richards, who started rough but came back good towards the end of the night.  Regardless, both have already won a Bronze Medal in these games, and they still have the individual apparatus competitions to come.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's BMX Qualifying: An American in Paris

You all should be proud of me, I resisted the temptation to call this one "An American Perris in Paris."  Mainly because I wasn't sure how to spell her name when I painted it.  Perris Benegas (USA) did enough to qualify to compete for a medal in Women's BMX Freestyle.  I am having trouble finding when the actual medal event is or has taken place.  According to the internet it already has, and she took Silver.  So this may be the only painting of this event.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Gymnastics Team All-Around: Angelic

I stand in awe of most Olympic athletes and most particularly gymnasts.  But Suni Lee's (USA) back story of a rare kidney disease just a year or so ago is amazing.  My wife suffers with PKD and has had a kidney transplant.  I know what kind of suffering it can bring!  She is doing well now, but nothing like being able to qualify for an Olympic team.  For Lee to be able to come back from that and be here in Paris is nothing short of amazing.  Then to nail her Uneven Bars routine so flawlessly, wow!  Just in case you weren't impressed enough, she had to step in and do the Floor Exercise tonight for a sick teammate.  After this routine, Team USA knew that they were almost guaranteed a gold medal in Paris.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Team All-Around

Brody Malone (USA) picked a great time to come right in his High Bar routine.  During qualifying he fell off twice fortunately the team was still able to qualify for the team all-around despite his uncharacteristically bad routine.  So tonight, he was spot on!  At this point he is flying through the air towards a perfect landing.  He personified the gymnastic adage, 'fly high, stick the landing.'  Like his teammates before him he did his part to make sure the USA medals in team gymnastics in Paris.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Surfing: Shooting the Curl

I'm not really sure if this is still what this move is called, but it fits just the same.  The surfer will catch the start of the breaking wave and ride down through the curl of the waves as it crashes over their head.  With luck or skill, they will pop out the end of the curl for an exciting move on the waves.  I was wondering how the surfing was going to be held in Paris, but it isn't.  The Olympic surfers are all down in the rather beautiful French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti.  John John Florence (Team USA) had such a great ride that he is qualified into the the semi's without having to surf the quarterfinals.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Team Qualifying: Hanging Around

Asher Hong (Team USA) does a brilliant routine on the Still Rings.  I had to do these way back in middle school and could barely manage to hold myself up, let alone this move.  And I don't think this was the hardest position he took on the rings.  His efforts were part of what made sure that Team USA will make it through to the all-around competition for team gold.  He also qualified himself in the Still Rings to fight for an individual medal as well.

Olympics 2020, Bronze and Silver on the Road

Omer Shapira (Israel) and Anna Plichta (Poland) may have lost the wheel of the Austrian, Anna Kisenhofer, but they still were a minute or two ahead of the peloton with just six kilometers left to race.  Should they be able to stay away, they will be fighting for Silver and Bronze medals between them.  That is a big IF however.

Alas, they were caught finishing 24th and 27th respectfully.  Yet, everyone knows that they were at the Olympics and were very competitive on the road.  After all, they weren't caught until inside of the final two kilometers of the day.

Olympics 2020, There May Be a Medal in It

With just three women up the road, Juliette Labous (France) jumped clear of the peloton with hopes of bridging across the the last of the early break away.  She has just 17 kilometers to catch at least one of the three and she will be in a Olympic medal winning position.  Instead she was chased down by the peloton shortly before they also caught two of the remaining three up the road.  She had clearly given the effort everything she had because once caught she couldn't hold the tail of the peloton.  She finished her day in 30th three and a half minutes behind the time of the Gold Medal.

Olympics 2020, On Her Own with 5 Minutes

I am intriqued by the camera apparatus hanging from the back of the car ahead of the last remaining member of the early break of the day.  Anna Kisenhofer (Austria) had a five minute gap on the main peloton with just forty kilometers to race.  The usual rule of thumb is that the rider off the front needs a minute lead for every ten kilometers left to the line for the break to have a chance of succeeding.  So it was looking like she has a chance to win the gold medal unless she tires to quickly in the kilometer left to the finishing straight of the Fuji Raceway.  Without race radios, she may have a chance of the peloton not getting their chase of her timed out right.

I am also impressed that most everytime I can see the roadway in both road races there is virtually always bike lanes or a completely seperate bike roadway.

Olympics 2021, Yet Again!

The Dutch were on a very aggressive ride today.  Each would go on an attack only to be caught by the peloton.  But as soon as one was caught another would go.  I think this was the third time Annemiek Van Vleutin (Netherlands) had escaped the clutches of the peloton.  This one looked like it might be the move that left the peloton for the rest of the race.  She was eventually caught again.  I was cheering for her success in hopes that she could erase the disaster that befell her in the Rio Games five years ago.  While on a lone break for the line, she fell on the final descent and broke her back.  To see her riding again at all is a true show of determination, yet being in a possible winning move at the next Olympics is simply amazing.  Spoiler alert.  She was caught, yet manage to sprint for what she thought was the Gold Medal.  She hadn't realized there was still one rider up the road, but does take home the Silver.

Olympics 2020, Trying to Stay Cool

This foursome off the front of the peloton by over five kilometers was doing everything they could to stay cool in the 95 degree heat.  Anna Plichta (Poland) pour her water over her neck and back, while Omer Shapira (Israel) reached for bottles from her team car.  Both Anna Kiesenhofer (Austria) and Ashliegh Moolman (South Africa)  made to with open jerseys and pedaling on towards a dream of an Olympic medal.  My wife was very found of this painting.  As she put it, you could see the feminity of the rider, leaving now doubt about which Olympic road race this was.

Olympics 2020, Snagging Her Lunch

With another 97 kilometers still to race, it was important to keep eating.  The heat made it that much more so, although the cold can make a rider burn even more calories in a race.  Anna Plichta (Poland) reached out to grab her musette full of tasty goodies from her soigneur as behind, Anna Kisenhofer (Austria) had to swerve to miss her.  Or it may have been that with a bottle in her hand and almost a hundred kilometers in her legs, Kisenhofer wasn't as alert as she should have been in the feed zone.  Still, no harm - no foul.
