Paris Nice 23, Stage 3: Leading Them Home

Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) drove hard all of the way through the finish line keeping as many seconds to the team’s advantage as possible.  Behind the big German, his countryman and team leader, Maximilian Schachmann was pulling faces just to stay on his wheel. The duo gapped Marco Haller and another teammate in the final meters of the team time trial course.  They finished 29 seconds off of the best time, leaving Schachmann 28 seconds out of first place going into the mountain top finish stage tomorrow.

Paris Nice 23, Stage 3: Off the Front and Out the Back

Today’s stage was a team time trial, the first in almost sixty years contested in the Paris Nice race.  Jayco-Alula went out hot and seemed to keep building speed as they went around the 32 kilometer course.  The discipline has each teammates spending time on the front pushing through the wind as those behind get a bit of a break until it is their turn to put their nose into the wind.  This is the first time each rider will be given their actual finish time, and the team’s time will be taken by the first rider to cross the line.  Usually, the clock stops on the fourth or fifth rider to cross the line, and that is the time given to each member of the team.  Lucas Hamilton had just finished his turned on the front, but it was all he had to give.  As he swung away, he simply drifted on past his teammates; Chris Harper, Matteo Sobrero, Simon Yates, Luke Durbridge, and Kellan O’Brien.  Their sprinter, Michael Matthews had already been dropped by the group setting new best times all along the course.

TDF, Stage 5 ITT: Not What He Wanted

Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) learned the opposite side of the power of the Maillot Jaune.  Two years ago it was his Yellow Jersey that allowed him to successfully time trial fast enough to keep his jersey for a bit longer in 2019.  Today, without the jersey, he just didn't have the legs to regain his jersey from Stage 1.  He started the day eight seconds off of Van Der Poel's lead but now is 48 seconds back and sitting in fourth overall.  Not a complete disaster by any means (others faired much worse) but it surely wasn't what he wanted to do today.  I am sure we will see him jump out of the peloton on the next hilly stage this weekend.

Tour, Stage 2: Better Than Expected

As Katusha-Alpecin came through the first time check, they surprised everyone, including themselves, by posting the new best time.  If they were able to maintain the pace it would put most every other team on the back foot.  By the time they reached the line in Brussels they had faded by six seconds to the time of Team Ineos - finishing the day tied for 4th place on the stage.

See this painting come to life in this time lapse video...

Tour, Stage 20: All He Has

The bronze medalist from the UCI Road World Championships in the Elite Men's Time Trial did not have the ride he hoped today.  Primoz Roglic (Lotto NL Junbo) went out hard in the opening kilometers of the individual time trial, but faded as he climbed towards the second time check of the day.  The man just behind him in the GC was the man who took silver in the Championships almost a year ago, Chris Froome (Sky).  Roglic had climbed into third overall with a brilliant descent yesterday, but he must have left too much of himself on the road then, to come out fighting today.  He slipped back into fourth for the ride into Paris.

Tour of Britain Stage 3: Flying Around

Gerald Ciolek who started the day in the Golden Jersey of race leader also had the advantage of being the last rider out on the course in today's individual time trial.  The advantage being that he knew all of the times of every rider in the race therefor knowing what time he had to finish by to keep the leader's jersey.  Knowing what time you need to make and being able to do it are two entirely different things as Ciolek was unable to rival the time of the Olympic time trial Champion, Bradley Wiggins.  So not only did Wiggo win the stage, but his time was enough to put him into the golden leader's jersey, which is the rightful place for Sir Bradley Wiggins to be in his home tour.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that can be yours by visiting my artist website.  Just follow the direct link at the end of this post to get your piece of the 2013 Tour of Britain.

Tour 2012: Alone Against the Clock

Sammy Sanchez is one of the outside changes for the overall, although I don't see his team being able to pull of an overall.  While I have always loved to watch Euskatdel Euskadi in the mountains I have never seen them take control of the peloton.  This is from the final time trial of the 2012 Tour outside of Chartres.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that can be yours by visiting my artist website, www.greigleach.com.  Just follow the direct link at the end of this post.
