This is just part of what it takes to be able to keep making art.  Many years back, 1986-87 I was awarded one of these Professional Artist Fellowships from the VMFA.  I have continued to apply almost every year since.  The last thirty plus years have seen quite a bit of artwork come out of my studio.  The work is all clearly done by my hand, but media, techniques and imagery have evolved over the decades.

This is one of the pieces that I had included in that 1986 application.

And this is one from this year's application.

Happily, both of these pieces of artwork are sold and not cluttering up my studio.  You can see most of my artwork at my website, www.greigleach.com

And remember, we are all stiving to make good work, get it seen, and make a living from our artwork.  So please buy some art from a living artist!

Newest Artwork (that isn't cycling)

Since I somehow managed not to make a still photograph of this piece, here is a video of the finished piece from my YouTube channel.  This is a combination of stained glass, wood and aluminum, with the addition of painted section created using Shiva Paintstiks (richesonart.com).

This work is based on my painted interpretation of the scriptual stations of the cross.  I am hoping to be able to create all fourteen stations for a church in the coming years.  You can see the earlier paintings at my website, https://www.greigleach.com/thumbnail_list.php?mgd_id=7219.

Here are some other time lapse videos of the final weekend of work on this piece.  I participated in a "48-to-Create" event at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond, VA, taking the opportunity to work with other fellow art makers.

"The Look"

I have been working on this piece for a number of weeks now, and today I managed to finish it.  With the goal of getting the artwork done this week, I have not been able to paint the Criterium du Dauphine.  Although you may be able to tell in these photos that I am listening to/watching the race while I work.  Along with these photographs, I am including a video to give you more of an idea on how this piece looks in person.

Note that you can here stage three of the race playing while I am filming this.

This piece is sold, but you can see other stained glass and painted sculptural pieces on my website at www.greigleach.com.  I do create works on commission as well.  Shipping is available worldwide.  You can email me through the website to get the wheels turning

I am thrilled to have my first stained glass and painted sculpture artwork, Delighted, included for exhibition at the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art.  Since my artwork didn't make this emailed announcement here is the piece that will be on exhibition (should it have arrived safely today), I want to share it here.  I also hope those of you out in southern California will go see this celebration of creative work.

Here is a detailed picture of the work as well.

About the Show
Craft Revolution shows works with the unity of inspiration and skill philosophers call “craft” --- in drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, ceramics, weaving, architectural plans and maquettes, interior design, furniture design, fashion design, photography, video, installation art, and objets d’art in all mediums, including wood, metal, stone, clay, paper, textiles and glass. Craft is the bond between concept and technique, the link between hand, mind, and heart. Our juror selected unusual, avant-garde, hybrid artworks that merge together, in a single piece, elements of fine art and the traditional crafts. Craft Revolution illuminates an important truth about contemporary art: we can no longer categorically separate craft, fine art, decorative art, and utilitarian, designer objects.
Sophisticated, well-crafted objects --- no matter the medium --- inevitably elicit un frisson of desire.

An Artist Is Always Working

Just because the Tour Down Under is over, and the Classics haven't yet started, doesn't mean I don't have anything going on in the studio.  I make art because I love to, and because I can't imagine doing anything else (with the possible exception of riding my bike).

This is an 8"x10" piece of stained glass that I created for our grand daughter who should be born in the next couple of days.  Her name is Alister Violet, so I thought creating an image of stars and violets was appropriate.  The skull goes with the tattoos that adorn both of her parents.  And I see the skull as a symbol of power and longevity.

You can learn more about this piece, see others and purchase work at my Etsy site, https://www.etsy.com/shop/ColorLineGlassPaint

I'll be back in the studio tomorrow.  And I'll be back painting cycling in March.
