Tour Femmes '22, Stage 4: Solving It Together

I learned today that the women only have one team car (instead of two like the men) following the race.  This means their race mechanics can be a long, long way back.  Yesterday's stage winner Cecilie Uttrup Ludwig (FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope) was fortunate to have her teammate, Vittoria Guazzini, with her when she got a f;rat rear tire. The FDJ duo quickly swapped wheels and Ludwing got back into the race.  Apparently, the mechanics had the foresight to supply each rider with the necessary allen wrench to pull the through axle to allow the wheel change to happen.  Guazzine was helped shortly after getting her team leader back in the race by the Shimano neutral service moto.  It was a bit frustrating for the duo to watch the Shimano car go past them.  It has been a very chaotic stage with so much going on, the driver can be excused for not seeing Guazzini trying to wave them down.  Ludwig just kept working on her bike.  Time was of the essence.

Giro, Stage 9: Here, Take Mine

I wish I had caught who it was that was passing a front wheel to Ruben Plaza (Israel Cycling Academy).  Teammates who are further down on general classification will aid those on the team that have a mechanical.  That is what is going on here, Plaza had a puncture to his front tire so his teammate passed his own over to him.  Plaza quickly got back underway while his teammate awaited the arrival of the Israel Cycling Acadmy team car.  Cycling is, after all, a team sport.

Giro, Stage 4: Get Going

There are times when the team car and neutral service are too far away to lend a timely hand.  This then falls to a teammate of the protected rider.  So it was for Laurent Didier (Trek-Segafredo).  His teammate, Gianluca Brambilla, had a flat rear wheel so he removed his own wheel swapped it onto to Brambilla's bike and help him get going back in search of the peloton.  Didier will wait for the team car to arrive so he, too, can get back underway. 

I remember when there was the big discussion about whether disc brakes should be allowed in the Pro Tour peloton, now roughly half of the teams are riding the more dependable brakes.  As of yet, I am unaware of the feared slicing injuries having occured due to the thin metal discs.  I admit it looks odd to me, not seeing the calipers up on the forks and seat stays.
