Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Team Fencing - Foil: A Golden Touch

I do enjoy how NBC opens their primetime coverage of the Olympics with a perfect moment of Team USA winning a gold medal.  Tonight it was L. Scruggs (USA) scoring the winning touche against A. Errigo (Italy) to give her team the Gold Medal.  Naturally, it is Italy winning the Silver.  I love this sport having had the chance to learn it in Junior College so very many years ago.  Side note, Scruggs is currently a student at Harvard.  I will never measure up to either her academic prowess or her physical prowess.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around: Needed Perfection

Due to a disastrous start of his bid for Gold Zhang Boheng (China) needed a near perfect score on his final apparatus, the High Bar. He started on the Floor Exercise where he so badly missed a tumbling pass that he ended up with his head and hands on the mat, basically making a tripod with his body.  He has spent the rest of the night trying to claw back from a deep scoring deficit to get to this point.  He knew he was going to take an almost perfect score but fell short.  Fortunately, he did literally fall short.  Despite his best efforts, he just couldn't overtake Oka for the Gold, and like China in the team competition, he must resolve himself to be the Silver Medalist of these Games.  Still China leads the Gold Medal count with nine, but is quite a bit further down the tally in the total medals count.

Paris Olympics 2024, Men's Gymnastics Individual All Around: Not the Man They Were Expecting

When the defending Olympic Gold Medalist faltered it was his teammate Shinnosuke Oka (Japan) who rose to the occasion.  He had been posting excellent scores and was benefiting from others earlier misfortunes as well.  As he finished his final rotation on the Parallel Bars, he knew he had a medal.  Now he just has to wait for Zhang Boheng (China) to finish his High Bar routine to discover what color it would be.  I'll jump ahead to let you know that Zhang's score was not enough to overtake Oka, so it is Gold for Japan.  He is now a team gold medalist and an individual gold medalist in the men's gymnastics all around.

There are many stories at the Olympics of athletes going through all sorts of struggles to get to the Olympics.  One that speaks to me is what those from the Ukraine have had to endure just to be able to be present let alone competitive.  But that is exactly Oleg Verniaiev (Ukraine).  He has returned from war in his country, a ban from competitive sports, and is now in his third Olympics having missed the Tokyo Games because of the suspension.  But here he is leading after each rotation and finishing eighth on the day.

The American Paul Juda (USA) has built his gymnastics career on his precise movements over the high difficulty.  It is a strategy that has served him well and made him a joy to watch.  His problem is that others can be almost as flawless as he, but they are doing far more difficult routines.  He did well and finished fourteenth, just once spot ahead of his countryman Frederick Richards, who started rough but came back good towards the end of the night.  Regardless, both have already won a Bronze Medal in these games, and they still have the individual apparatus competitions to come.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Triathlon: Winning at Home

I should say that I don't know if the Frenchwoman, Cassandre Beaugard lives in Paris, but I am sure the City of Light has adopted her tonight.  She was clearly urged on by the French fans as she made her move in the last kilometers of the Women's Triathlon.  She dropped her teammate Emma Lombardi, as well as Julie Derron (Suisse) who you can see behind just coming over the rise of the Pont Alexandre III for Silver.  Not yet turning onto the bridge is Beth Potter (Great Britain) who claimed the Bronze.  The French end today with a total of 26 Olympics medals eight of which are Gold.  They only trail China in total Gold Medals by one, and the USA in total medals by four.  These games have already been an epic success for the host country on both the sports side and the host side.  Chapeau!

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Triathlon: Running Up the Champs Elysees

Without the chance to see the Champs Elysees in the Tour de France, it was nice to get a peek today in the Women's Triathlon.  The women had already made the loop by bike, but they went back up the famous Parisian boulevard again in the final leg of their race.  It was Julie Derron (Suisse) leading the small group containing Beth Potter (Great Britain), Cassandre Beaugard (France) and her teammate Emma Lombardi.  Chasing behind is first the defending Gold Medalist, Flora Duffy (Bermuda) and then a bit further back is Taylor Spivey (USA).  Beaugard does go on to win with Derron taking silver and Potter taking the bronze.  I am sure that Beth Potter gets quite a bit of teasing about being a Potter in the UK.  Here is hoping we will see the Champs again in the men's and women's road races this coming weekend.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Triathlon: Making Her Transition

Taylor Brown (Great Britain) had made up quite a bit of time in the cycling portion of the Women's Triathlon.  She was the first to come back to the Pont Alexandre III to transition from the bike to the running leg of the event.  She quickly shed her helmet and slipped on her running shoes as she headed out for the final leg of the Triathlon.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's BMX Qualifying: An American in Paris

You all should be proud of me, I resisted the temptation to call this one "An American Perris in Paris."  Mainly because I wasn't sure how to spell her name when I painted it.  Perris Benegas (USA) did enough to qualify to compete for a medal in Women's BMX Freestyle.  I am having trouble finding when the actual medal event is or has taken place.  According to the internet it already has, and she took Silver.  So this may be the only painting of this event.

Paris Olympics 2024, Women's Beach Volleyball: Rejected

This is Cheng of the Team USA Beach Volleyball team of Cheng/Huges rejecting the spike of Chameneau of the French team of Chameneau/Vieira.  The teams fought two close sets under the shadow of the Effiel Tower in their second pool play game to decide who goes into the finals.  The USA won today but the second set went to three match point serves.  This was not the point that decided the game, but it was the one that set up the first match point.
