Richie Porte (BMC) had done everything he needed to do to win the Tour Down Under in yesterday's stage but he could still lose it today So his team kept him on the front of the peloton all day mainly being shepherded by this teammate Francisco Ventoso While Porte's lead was unsurmountable those further down on the podium were separated by just seconds That is why Gregor Muhlberger (Bora Hansgrohe) and his teammate Lukas Postleberger were chasing the two escapees up the road With a three second time bonus on offer at the first intermediate sprint their man Jay McCarthy could jump into third overall
