Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has owned the final climb up the Mur de Huy, and today was no exception. Once the attack was made by FDJ, Valverde went on the offensive. Try as they might, no one was able to catch the Spaniard's wheel. With his arms raised in a victory salute (that include a pantomine of shooting an arrow), Valverde claimed his fourth straight victory in Huy and his fifth for his career. Closing, but not fast enough, was Dan Martin (Quickstep) who took second on the day. Rounding out the peloton was Dylan Teuns (BMC).

Fleche Wallone: It Is Possible
Bob Jungel (Quickstep) was able to rid himself of his companion, Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) as he scaled the wall that is the Mur de Huy for the final time. Jungel went under the flame rouge maring the final kilometer of the race with about twenty seconds on the closing peloton. The minute per ten kilometer rule implied that he had enough to win. Should he be able to hold off those behind, he would be the first from Luxembourg to win Fleche Wallone. However, the steepest section of the climb was yet to come. But a win is still possible.

Fleche Wallone: Pressing On
It was the National Champion of Luxembourg, Bob Jungels (Quickstep), who was able to bridge across the Alessandro De Marchi (BMC), The pair were able to open almost a minute on the Movistar, Orica-Scott led peloton as they started the bell lap with just 15 kilometers left to race. It was looking good for the pair, but the peloton has a way of timing the catch to perfection.

Fleche Wallone: Down by the River
Alessandro De Marchi (BMC) was able to use the tight turn at the top of the Cote de Cherave to open up a gap on those that had grapped his wheel on the climb. The Italian dropped into an aerodynamic tuck and went off in search of the town of Huy. The river bank made for a scenic ride towards the penultimate scaling of the Mur de Huy - not that he had anytime to take in the scenery.

Fleche Wallone: Getting a Gap
With the last of the early escapees back in the peloton, it was time for the counter attacks to start. In fact, one reason the peloton will leave the early break out front is to discourage others from going on the offensive. BMC didn't bring Greg Van Avermaet to the 81st Fleche Wallone, so it left other team members with the freedom to ride for themselves. The first to take advantage was Alessandro De Marchi, who jumped away with another 46 kilometers left to race. I was unable to determine which rider from Movistar who covered De Marchi's move. The name the announcer was giving didn't match my startlist.

Fleche Wallone: Surrendering
As the kilometer rolled along, and the peloton came ever closer, the riders in the break began to surrender to the inevitable catch. Daniel Pearson (Aqua Blue) with Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin) tucked onto his wheel, peered back over his shoulder to see the Lotto Soudal led peloton breathing down his neck. The pair had been off the front of the peloton for almost two hundred kilometers, so there was no shame in the capture.

Fleche Wallone: Take This One!
Even the best riders and mechanics can't keep things from going wrong. Dan Moreno (Movistar) managed to snap a chain while passing through the town of Huy for the first time. The Italian let his team car know what the problem was via radio and then pulled off to await a new bike. The entire team in the car jumped out to get Moreno another bike an get him back racing as quickly as possible. With another 60 kilometers left to race, it was certain that Moreno would be back in the peloton in support of his team leader, Alejandro Valverde.

Fleche Wallone: Nearly Four Minutes
As per usual, the race was marked by the early break away, a group that swelled to six riders and a lead of over four minutes. Those in the group (and this painting) included; Yoann Bagot (Cofidis), Romain Guillemois (Direct Energie), Nils Politt (Katusha-Alpecin), Daniel Pearson (Aqua Blue), Faien Doubey (Wanty Groupe-Gobert), and Olivier Pardini (WB Veranclassic Aquality Protect). The group was being provided their time gap back to the peloton from the old school chalkborad being held aloft by one of the support motorcycles.

Paris Roubaix: A Great Spring!
This painting expresses the joy and frustration that is bike racing.
As feared, the trio of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC), Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep) and Sebastian Langeveld (Cannondale-Drapac) were got on the final turned by both Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) and Giani Moscon (Sky). In fact, it was Moscon that opened up the sprint to the line. He was quickly swamped by Stybar. However it was the on-fire Greg Van Avermaet who had the legs to take out the sprint and claim victory in Roubaix. Stybar was clearly frustrated with his second place finish as he slapped his handlebars on the line. Langeveld held on for third, with Stuyven and Moscon rounding out the top five.
It wasn't fated to be the fairy tale end of Tom Boonen's career. In fact he wasn't able to sprint to victory within his finishing group either. But he has provided us all with excitement, class and guts through his spectacular career. Chapeau!

Paris Roubaix: Looking It Over
After 250 kilometers of some of the roughest roads in northern Europe, the final kilometer is raced on the very smooth outdoor velodrome of Roubaix. The high banks afford the racers a chance to look each other over and to possibly get a jump descending off of the high side of the curve. The trio of Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep), Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) and Sebastian Langeveld (Cannondale-Drapac) had enough of a lead that they could slow down and try to out strategize each other. However, if they get too carried away, the chasing duo of Giani Moscon (Sky) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) might catch them and carrying speed steal the race at the last moment.

Paris Roubaix: Which One of Us?
"Which one of us is going to win this thing?" seemed to be the question on the mind of Sebastian Langeveld (Cannondale-Drapac) as he looked over at Zdenek Stybar (Quickstep). The third member of this escape trio was the reigning Olympic Gold Medalist, Greg Van Avermaet (BMC). They were racing through the section of heroes, the final serious section of pave that is lined with photos of the heroes of cycling over the ages at Paris Roubaix. The organizers had placed the yellow barricades to keep everyone on the rough cobbles and off of the smooth shoulders. Early the barricades also held the posters of the victors of the Hell of the North.

Paris Roubiax: Making Them Chase
With his long hair flowing, Daniel Oss (BMC) went off on his own with 36 kilometers left to race. Oss's move was a great piece of strategy for his team. Either those behind wouldn't be able to catch the Italian, or in their efforts they would give Oss's teammate, Greg Van Avermaet, a good long rest as the others chased him down. So this move is clearly a win/win for the Swiss/American team.

Paris Roubaix: Poursuivants
This trio of Dimitri Claeys (Cofidis), Gianni Moscon (Sky) and Jurgen Roelandts (Lotto Soudal), recognized that they had missed the possible move of the day and took it upon themselves to go chase it down. Behind them is a flotilla of motos including the neutral service moto sponsored by Mavic, and the TV cameraman. As always, fans were lining nearly every inch of this eleventh section of pave. All along this section were small signs thanking Tom Boonen for his years of cycling entertainment.

Paris Roubaix: Looking to Bridge Across
As he entered the section 14 of pave, Arnaud Demare (FDJ) decided to try and bridge across to the small group that included Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) and others. Each section of cobblestones are number in descending order and color coded by difficulty. The yellow banner at the start of this section lets the riders now that this is a three star section - a medium difficulty section. Demare never did make it to the front group, and soon found himself back in the main peloton. But at the risk of a spoiler alert, he did manage to finish in the top ten and as the highest place French rider.

Paris Roubaix: Applying Some Pressure
Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe), never one to just sit around and let others dictate the race, went to the front and applied some pressure. He brought his teammate, Maciej Bodnar, along with Daniel Oss (BMC) and Jasper Stuyvens (Trek-Segafredo). You can see the escort moto looking back to see what happened to the rest of the peloton. On the other hand, the women on the side of the road seemed more interested in taking selfies than seeing the giants of cycling ride by. Perhaps their boyfriends were the ones who were excited to see the race.

Paris Roubaix: Peloton & Pave
As the peloton entered the twentieth section of pave, it was Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) bedecked in his World Champion rainbow jersey that lead the way. Sagan has learned that being on the front of the group on the pave, makes for a saver ride (and considerably less dusty to boot). Other riders riding under the banner included, BMC, Katusha, Quickstep and FDJ. At this point it was mainly the domestiques setting the pace for their team leaders to do the work later in the race. It feels like absolutely every step of the way has been lined by enthusiastic cycling fans from all over Europe out on a sunny day to see their favorite riders.

Paris Roubaix: Leading the Way
I can swear that this was the early break of the day, I joined the race at 169 kilometers left of the 250 plus on the day. Mickael Delage (FDJ) and Jelle Wallays (Lotto Soudal) were one of many breaks on the day. However like all of the others, they weren't able to get more than 40-50 seconds on the main peloton. With the narrowed cobbled roads, the soigneurs position themselves along the pave sections (this is section 26 of a total of 29 sections) and pass bottles, food and (if needed) spare wheels because it can be a long time before a mechanic and team car are able to reach a rider in need.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: A Walk in the Park
Surprising most everyone, except himself, Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep) was able to stay way off the front of the race, all of the way to the line. His lead was so massive that he actually got off of hisbike and walked across the line saluting the crowd. As soon as he did finish, he raised his bike over his head in a joyful celebration. He had prove the old adage of Jens Voigt, that if you go in the break you may have a chance of winning, if you don't go in the break you have no chance at all.
Chapeau, Philippe!
The next race I will be painting with be the famous Paris Roubaix in just one week's time.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: Still Chasing at 5K
I can only assume that Dylan Van Baarle (Cannondale-Drapac) and Greg Van Avermaet (BMC) were surprised that Philippe Gilbert was able to hold them off with five kilometers left to race. The third member of this group, Niki Terpstra (Quickstep) had the job of monitoring the others and to not assist in the chase. With his teammate up the road, he wasn't going to help the others to catch him. And in the unlikely event that Gilbert gets caught, Terpstra would have the freshest legs and could then take the win for the team.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: You've Got This!
With just eight kilometers left to race, Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep) was being encouraged by his director sportif, Wilfried Peeters. It was beginning to look like the Belgium National Champion was going to succeed in his very long, hard gamble. The crash of his main rivals, Naesen, Van Avermaet, and Sagan, had disrupted the chase and given the former World Champion a better chance of taking the victory at the line. Gilbert had been asking all of the motos for some since of what the time gap to the chasers was, we can assume that was another thing that Peeters had to say to his man.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: Together in Misery
It seems that it was not only Tom Boonen (Quickstep) that was having some rough luck on the rough pave of Flanders. At first it appeared that a fan's jacket had caught Oliver Naesen's (Ag2r La Mondiale) wheel, but looking closer, it was Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe) who had clipped the banners hanging from the barriers along the side of the race course. Also tangled up in the crash was Greg Van Avermaet (BMC). Van Avermaet was the first to jump back onto his bike and rejoin the race. Sagan had a bit more trouble getting underway. I never did figure out what happened to the Frenchman, Naesen.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: A Concerted Effort
One man leading the race, with two chasing it meant that this the third group on the road had to chase, and chase hard. Amongst these six chasers was the Rainbow Jersey of Peter Sagan (Bora Hansgrohe), Oliver Naesen (Ag2r La Mondiale), and Yoann Offredo (Wanty Groupe Gobert). With the race spread out in numerous small groups it feel to the neutral service support sponsored by Shimano to look after the needs of these riders until their team cars could reach them.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: Having Problems
Bike racing takes great skill, training, and determination, but most of all it seems to take a good bit of luck as well. And luck was not what Tom Boonen (Quickstep) found at the bottom of the Oude Kruisberg. Instead he was plaqued by a jammed chain and perhaps a broken derailleur to boot. As he tried to fix it on his own, he was photographed by the cameraman on the back of the motorcycle, the TV cameras and every fan behind the ropes lining the climb. With so many strong riders climbing away from the base of the climb, it was unlikely that he would see the front of the race again today.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: Giving Chase
The duo of Fabio Felline (Trek-Segafredo) and Dylan Van Baarle (Cannondale Drapac) hit the bottom of the Taaienberg with a lead of about thirty seconds on the peloton, but trailing the lone figure of Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep) by almost a minute. Like E3 Harelbeke last week and Paris Roubaix next, the Ronde van Vlaanderen is punctuated with steep cobbled climbs lined by screaming cycling fans, many whom have spent the day enjoying the fine beers of Belgium.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: For the Home Crowd
Philippe Gilbert (Quickstep) had the pleasure of leading the race through Belgium bedecked in the Belgium National Road Championships Jersey. Gilbert had gone out on his own from quite a few kilometers out from the finish. With at least 40 kilometers left to race, it was a big ask for Gilbert to hold off the cream of Classics riders chasing behind. It should come as no surprise that the crowds lining nearly every inch of roadway, were beyond delighted to see their champion leading the race, at least thus far.

Ronde van Vlaanderen: From the Start
As soon as the start flag was pulled in, the attacks went off the front. With the peloton facing 260 kilometers in the saddle, it was literally a long shot to succeed with the break away. This early group of escapees included Julien Morice (Direct Energie), Oliviero Troia (UAE Abu Dhabi), Mark McNally (Wanty Groupe Gobert), Stef Van Zummeren (Veranda's Willems-Crelan), and Julian Duval (Ag2r La Mondiale). In the distance you can see others trying to bridge across to the group. They did gain over eleven minutes before the big names decided to bring them back into the fold.
