Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, Men’s Race: Who Do We Have Now?

With a teammate up the road, both Wout Van Aert and Christophe Laporte (Visma-Lease a Bike) soft pedaled to discourage others from chasing Matteo Jorgenson.  The problem was, that allowed those chasing behind to join in to the mid race break away.  Toms Skujins (Lidl-Trek) seems to be scolding Laporte for letting Ivan Garcia Cortina (Movistar), Dylan Teuns (Israel-Premier Tech) and Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) back into the race.  Just behind this group, another was just seconds behind.  After looking like the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad was going to come down to a six man race, everything suddenly changed with just eleven kilometers left to race.  It was looking like it may come down to a field sprint after all.

Tour de France 23, Stage 12: We've Got Company

Tiesj Benoot (Jumbo-Visma) looks back over the heads of his break away companions, Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek) and Dylan Teuns (Israel-Premier Tech) to see that there are three more guys coming to join them.  While it cuts these three guys' odds of winning the stage, it equally doubles their collective chances of staying off the front of today's racing.  With 91 kilometers to race there is truly strength in numbers.

Tour '22, Stage 7: Adding Points

The beard of the peloton, Simon Geschke (Cofidis) was mopping up all of the King of the Mountain Points on the first two climbs of the day.  He won't be able to take over the lead in the competition unless he scores some points at the finish atop the Planches les Belles Filles.  On his shoulder is two of the remaining break of five, Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Victorious) and Cyril Barthe (B&B Hotels-KTM). Teuns is hoping to repeat his victory atop the final mountain.  Since the stage ends at the top of a climb, there are double KOM points on offer, so Geschke will need to place in the top three on the stage to claim the Maillot a Pois.

TDF, Stage 8: Having Held On

Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Victorious) had dropped Michael Woods (Israel Start Up Nation) with a daredevil descent down the Col de la Colombiere.  He pushed on his advantage despite the wet and rainy roads knowing that a stage victory in the Tour de France was the reward for the effort.  As I learned in the post race interview, Teuns' grandfather had died just before the start of the Tour.  Teuns left to start the Tour the day after the funneral.  When asked about the this salute has he won the Tour he broke down in tears talking about what this win meant to him and would have meant to his grandfather.  Thus Teuns continued what Phil Liggett has been calling the Tour de Tears.

TDF, Stage 8: Together Now

Today's stage was an easy one to get confused on.  With riders spread all up and down the mountains, there was even a group over 16 minutes behind the race at this point, it is no wonder I got this painting a little wrong.  Michael Woods (Israel Start Up Nation) had managed to chase down the loan guy up the road and he did ride for Bahrain-Victorious.  However, this is Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Victorious) who was not the guy sucking up the King of the Mountian points on the day.  That was his teammate Wout Poels.  Teuns has just done what Woods did before.  Teuns had left the chasing group and gone up the road in search of the leader on the road, but in this case it was Woods who was the prey, just as Woods had been the hunter on the Col de Romme.

Dauphine, Stage 4: Cutting Corners

Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Victorious) cut the corner at the top of this climb rather close as he looked for the quickest way around the 16.4 kilometer time trial course.  It is a bit risky coming close to the fans along the side of the road.  It was way back in the days of Lance Armstrong when the American was brought down by a shopping bag of a fan hooking his handlebars.  He was later brought down by much bigger problems, but then you most likely know all about that already.  Teuns put in a good ride today but didn't factor into the over all on the stage or the general classification.

Paris Nice, Stage 1: Over the Top

Frequent readers will know that I love a title that can have more than one meaning.  This one is another of those titles.  Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) had come over the top of Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-McLaren), as well as Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb) and the fading Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step), to take the win in Plaiser.  The slight climb to the finish required Schachmann to have the legs to literally come over the top of the climb to claim the first Yellow Jersey of the 2020 Paris Nice.  So the opening GC battle is now Schachmann followed by Dylan Teuns and then Tiesj Benoot.

Paris Nice, Stage 1: Two More Coming

With just four kilometers left to race, Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) looks over his shoulder to see that two more riders have leapt out of the chasing group in an attempt to bridge across to him and Tiesj Benoot (Sunweb).  Leading the charge is the German National Champion, Maximilian Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) with Dylan Teuns (Bahrain McLaren) glued to his wheel.  It will vastly increase the chances of staying off the front to the line, but now one of the four will not be on the podium for the stage.  Conversely, one of the four will be pulling on the Yellow Jersey of race leader in four kilometers' time.

Tour, Stage 6: Literally Caught at the Line

Given how steep the final ascent was, and that the line was right at the apex of the climb, there were helpers ready to catch each rider as he crossed the line.  So it was that as Dylan Teuns (Bahrain-Merida) struggled to raise his arms in victory, he was stablized by one of those assigned with making sure they didn't fall on their faces after the effort of reaching the top.  Teuns took the stage, but it was the man coming in second Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segafredo) who took over the lead in the Tour albeit by just six seconds.

Giro, Stage 20: Two Guys, Two Minutes

The last two members of the early break were, Dries Devenyns (Quickstep) and Dylan Teuns (BMC).  The pair had gotten to the valley floor between the last two climbs of the 100th Giro d'Italia with a two minute advantage over the gruppa maglia rosa.  Devenyns may have been looking to help his teamate, Bob Jungels, regain the Maglia Bianca, but Teuns was on the front looking for stage glory for himself.  I have enjoyed seeing all of the pink decorations along the course of each and every stage.  Today it seemed to be the day for the pink pennants to festoon the yards along the roadside.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  It is only $75 USD and international shipping is available.

Giro, Stage 20: Starting the Climb

The final road stage, and this is the final break away of the 100th Giro d'Italia.  The quintet of riders hit the base of the Monte Grappa with a few minutes in hand, but it could be argued that they were all out front to provide help to their respective team leaders later in the stage.  The one member of the group you can't see is Dries Devenyns (Quickstep).  Otherwise, it is Tom Jelte Slagter (Cannondale-Drapac) who is leading Dylan Teuns (BMC), Maxim Belkov (Katusha-Alpecin) and Mathieu Ladagnous (FDJ) through the stop sign and on to the climb.

Fleche Wallone: HIs Fourth in a Row

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) has owned the final climb up the Mur de Huy, and today was no exception.  Once the attack was made by FDJ, Valverde went on the offensive.  Try as they might, no one was able to catch the Spaniard's wheel.  With his arms raised in a victory salute (that include a pantomine of shooting an arrow), Valverde claimed his fourth straight victory in Huy and his fifth for his career.  Closing, but not fast enough, was Dan Martin (Quickstep) who took second on the day.  Rounding out the peloton was Dylan Teuns (BMC).
