While hardly a mountain top finish, the climb up to the line at Caltagirone was more than brutal enough. It was Enrico Battaglin (LottoNL Jumbo) who launched first inside of the final kilometer, but faded as the line took too long to arrive. Tim Wellens (Lotto Fix-All) had the legs and the will to hold off the fast closing Michael Woods (EF Education First) who found the finish line came too soon instead. Chasing behind, but missing the podium was Simon Yates (Mitchelton-Scott). Yates and Wellens improved their positions on the General Classification, but the top three positions still remain the same. Surprisingly, Chris Froome (Sky) also faded, losing another 4 seconds to the Maglia Rosa of Rohan Dennis (BMC).
