With the early break finally mopped up by the peloton, it was time for the counter attacks to start. One of the first to go was Adrien Petit (Total Direct Energie). With another 63 kilometers left to race, it wasn't very likely that Petit could stay away. His chances were even less without anyone joining him in the effort to get away.
