Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Getting Back on Course

This had to be one of the more amazing moments in a time trial race.  By the way, this is the painting that I felt was fore shadow with "Finding Her Own Way."  Aigul Gareeva (Russia) missed the final turn going of course.  She had the where withall to turn around and follow the directing offical to get back on course.  This moment could have been heartbreaking, but she had enough time in hand to still take the lead by six seconds.  The only rider left on the road just made it onto the podium in the Bronze Medal position.  Chapeau!

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available though my website at www.greigleach.com, or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of this post.  Since it is an original it is first come first served.  The painting was created using Yarka St Petersburg watercolors from Richesonart.com. The work sells for $75 plus shipping. And yes, international shipping is available.

Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Sneaking Inside

Not wanting to be out done by her countrywoman, Shirin Van Anrooij (Netherlands) slide up the barriers to get around the Kazakh, Ulyana Sukhorebrik, who had started a minute before her.  Like her teammate before her Anrooij took over the race lead when she finished her ride.  However, she was only bested by one other rider ending her day with a Silver Medal for her efforts.

Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Sprinting for Time

Leonie Bos (Netherlands) got up out of the saddle to sprint up the final climb of the nearly 14 kilometer course.  She had been laying good time splits around the course but wanted to get to the line as quickly as possible.  She did managed to register the fasted time when she finished.  Once everyone had finished the race she had dropped to sixth place.  When I painted the Richmond 2015 Worlds, I had the chance to meet the entire Dutch Junior Women's team (they are now too old to race at this event).  Not only were they so strong, they were still fairly typical teenage girls.  Bos and the rest of her team certainly showed they were much the same.

Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Finding Her Own Way

The American, Megan Jastrab, was able to catch the woman who started ahead of her, Natalia Krzeslak (Poland).  I took the arrows on the roadway to inform the title of this piece.  While the arrows point either straight ahead or a left turn, Jastrab was leaning in to turn right towards the finish line.  Later in the race, this image will be seen as fore shadowing.  As Jastrab crossed the line, she set the new best time and held on to a place on the podium until the last few women crossed the line.

Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Counting Down

Mette Egtoft Jensen (Denmark) was set to start her effort in the Junior Women's Individual Time Trial.  Jensen was starting mid way down the start order based on her UCI ranking (think tennis seeds).  Thing is, you need to race the race.  She did tickle the placings early on, but ultimately those starting later were the ones contending for the medals.

Doha 2016, Junior Women's ITT: Looking for Shade

The American Junior Women were not able to repeat their first and second places from 2015, perhaps the home crowd gave them wings last year. It look like they had a chance to have two on the podium when Hannah Aremsman (USA) finished just six seconds behind her countywoman, Skylar Schneider. Alas, two more riders were able to better their times, leaving them in fourth and fifth on the day.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  It is only $75 USD and international shipping is available.

Doha 2016, Junior Women's ITT: Faster Still

I had the pleasure of meeting Karlijn Swinkels (Netherlands) and painting her when she raced here in Richmond, Virginia last year. I am so excited for her that she was able to post the only best time that was beaten today in Doha! She now has a Rainbow Jersey and a gold medal. She can now call herself a World Champion.

Doha 2016, Junior Women's ITT: Coming in Fast

The German rider Franziska Brausse was having a spectacular race. She look solid, fast and powerful on her TT bike as she negotiated the twisty course around The Pearl off the coast of Doha. Brausse posted a new best time as she crossed the finish line, but the final podium was not to be hers. She ended her day in 6th overall.

Doha 2016, Junior Women's ITT: Just Underway

Maaike Boogaard (Netherlands) was one of several of the Dutch Junior Women's team when they were in Richmond, Virginia for the 2015 Worlds.  Boogaard hit the course fast and assuredly as she faced the 100 plus degree heat.  She managed a third place as she crossed the line, unfortunately there were quite a few more riders to finish.  She ended up finishing 12th overall.  Chapeau, my friend!

The Junior Women's Individual Time Trial got underway today.  This is the first race of five that will test each category of riders against the clock.  The race is oft called the race of truth, since one can not rely on teammates, drafting or strategy to win the race.  In this case, it is just one young woman against the clock.  While not the first to start, Mikayla Harvey (New Zealand) was an early starter.   She is just rolling out of the start house and out into the blistering heat of the desert sun in Doha on her 13.7 kilometer effort

Richmond 2015 UCI Worlds: Home Team Girl

The American, Emma White, was one of the early riders of the Junior Women to hit the course on the first day of riders racing in their national colors.  White had been posting new best times all along the course, times that she carried with her as she pushed all of the way to the line at 5th and E. Broad Streets.  Her ride earned her the top seat as she watch rider after rider fail to knock her off of the leader's chair.  It wasn't until her teammate, Chloe Dygert, hit the line that she knew it would be silver instead of gold for her efforts on the streets of Richmond.

This is a small original watercolor created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushed from www.richesonart.com.  In addition, prints of this painting will be available through the Richmond Times Dispatch website at www.richmond.com, hopefully very soon.

Richmond 2015 UCI Worlds: Dutch Cornering

If you have spent anytime reading my blog posts over the years, you are aware how much I love titles that have a play on words.  In this case, the title is a subtle reference to the famed, or perhaps infamous, Dutch Corner on the Champs Elysees on the final day of the Tour de France.  The Dutch fans are quite robust.  Even here in Richmond I saw Dutch fans dressed in bright orange costumes festooned with the red, white and blue flag of the Netherlands.  Yara Kastellin did her best to make her countrymen proud but was unable to find a step on the final podium.

This is a small original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  The paintings are for sale each day at the Downtown Fanfest in the Greater Richmond Convention Center at 5th and Marshall Streets in Richmond, VA.  There are originals and two different sizes of prints being offered for sale starting at $20.00 USD. Eventually, they will be available through www.richmond.com.

Richmond 2015 UCI Worlds: Against the Clock

Day two of the UCI World Road Racing Championships kicked off with the Women's Junior Time Trial.  Unfortunately for my painting efforts, there was no video coverage of the racing.  Fortunately, I have many cycling fan friends who were able to catch images along the sides of the course.  Thanks to Chris Dunn and Facebook, I was able to paint this of Daria Pikulik of Poland.  She was one of the earlier starters and spent some time in the hot seat chairs were riders sit waiting to discover if they will hold their position on the podium as each subsequent rider finishes her ride.  I actually had the opportunity to meet this 18 year old who was delighted to see this work (she went so far as to sign the back of the painting).
