Yorkshire 2019 - Jr Women's ITT: Finding Her Own Way
The American, Megan Jastrab, was able to catch the woman who started ahead of her, Natalia Krzeslak (Poland). I took the arrows on the roadway to inform the title of this piece. While the arrows point either straight ahead or a left turn, Jastrab was leaning in to turn right towards the finish line. Later in the race, this image will be seen as fore shadowing. As Jastrab crossed the line, she set the new best time and held on to a place on the podium until the last few women crossed the line.

Yorkshire 2019 - MIxed Relay: Bellisima
It was the Italian women that were the first to truly threaten the lead of the British. As the trio of Elisa Longo Borghini, Elena Cecchini and Tatiana Guderzo approached the time check, it was clear that they were on a race winning time. Unfortunately, fate intervened when Longo Borghini had a flat tire. She was able to chase back onto her teammates, but it slowed them down so that they just missed over taking the British team. That meant that they would just miss the podium as well.

Yorkshire 2019 - Mixed Relay: Less Than a Second
As the German men approached the first time check they were just a half second off the pace of the Brits. The trio was led by Jasha Sutterlin followed in turn by Nils Polit and Tony Martin. Martin is a four time World Champion in the Individual Time Trial, but is suffering from the lingering effects of a serious crash in this year's Vuelta d'Espania. When I got to watch him race in the Worlds here in Richmond, Virginia, he was still recovering from a bad crash tin the Tour de France. In both cases, he was able to contribute to the German team before having to drop off the pace.

Yorkshire 2019 - Mixed Relay: Dog Leg of the First Leg
Sorry, I couldn't resist the title. The Mixed Relay is being raced in two legs, first the men and then the women. Here two of the Swiss male riders, Joel Suter and Claudio Imhof, are making the final turn before starting the climb to the finish line in Harrogate. The men had been posting good times along the course, but just not fast enough to take over the lead from the British, much to the delight of the home crowd.

Yoirkshire 2019 - Mixed Relay: A Ride to Celebrate
As the British women finished their leg of the relay, Anna Henderson reached out to Joscelin Lowde knowing that they had just finished with a great time. The women had added to the advantage passed to them by their countrymen placing the home team in the hot seats of race leaders. As more teams finished, it was proving to be a ride truly worth celebrating. At the end of the day, the ride was good enough for a bronze medal in the first ever Mixed Relay Team Time Trial. Chapeau, or should I say "hats" to the entire British team?

Yorkshire 2019 - MIxed Relay: Now It Is Our Turn
As the second Spanish man crossed the finish line, it was the women's turn to hit the time trial course. As Margarita Garcia, Sheyla Gutierrez and Lourdes Oyarbide rolled down the ramp, the Belgium team waited for their man to cross the line in turn. For the record, the women in blue are Sofie De Vuyst, Valarie Demey, and Julie Van De Velde. I was hoping for a baton pass, but this does seem considerably saver and more logical.

Yorkshire 2019 - Mixed Team Time Trial: Starting It All
Here we go again! This is the first painting from this year's UCI Road World Championships. And it is the first time the Mixed Team Time Trial has been used in the Worlds. This race replaces the Team Time Trials where riders rode for their trade teams with both professional women's and men's teams competing for the Gold Medal of world champions. Instead, the race has three men doing one lap of the course, followed by three women starting as the second man crosses the line. The total time is taken once the second woman crosses the line. It is all a little confusing until I got to watch the racing. I was releaved to see that there was no baton being passed, which I feared since the race was being refered to as a relay. So, all that being said, this is the first three men to hit the course representing the UCI Cycling Center. The three men are Ben Katerberg (Canada), Dillon Corkery (Ireland) and Petr Kelemen (Czechia).
And you can watch this painting come to life on my YouTube channel as I talk about the race and watercolor painting.

Tour Stage 2: Big Crowds for a Big Break
Day two of the Tour saw the break form in the first kilometer of racing for the second day in a row. The group swelled to seven once Bart De Clercq (Lotto-Belisol) got across to the group containing, Blel Kadri (AG2R), the American Matthew Busche (Trek Factory Racing), Cyril Lemoine (Cofidis), Davide De La Cruz (NetApp Endura), Amindo Fonseca (Bretagne-Seche) and Perrig Quemeneur (Europcar). All of these guys saw this stage with its nine categorized climbs as a great opportunity for the break away to succeed, at the very least as a chance to take over the KIng of the Mountains Polka Dot Jersey. Estimates of the crowds along the roadside of Stage 1 ranged from one to two million people and from the start it looks like the 201 kilometers from York to Sheffield would top those numbers easily. This is an original small watercolor and ink painting created using Yarka St. Petersburg Watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com. This painting is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com and will be included in my self published "Book de Tour (learn more about early orders and backing opportunities at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1335072134/book-de-tour. Tour Stage 1: Getting the Point
With just a single King of the Mountain point on offer at the top of Craig Hill, it was a aggressive sprint to the summit. Unfortunately for Jens Voigt (Trek Factory Racing) the two young Frenchmen proved to quick for the senior campaigner. Ultimately it was Benoit Jarrier (Bretagne-Seche) getting the first virtual lead in the Polka Dot Jersey competition over his countryman, Nicolas Edet (Cofidis). The Tour has four races within the race, the Maillot Jaune , or Yellow Jersey, is for the least overall time, the Green Jersey is for the points leader, the Polka Dot Jersey for the rider who gains the most King of the Mountain points and the White Jersey for the best placed young rider under 25. Of course there is always the race for the stage victory, too. This is an original small watercolor and ink painting that is available for purchase at my artist website, www.greigleach.com To buy this piece of the 101st Tour de France, just follow the direct link at the end of this post. Tour Stage 1: From the Opening Kilometer
The 101st Tour de France got underway in Leeds after stopping in front of Harewwod House to be officially opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. After chatting with the royals and the cutting of the ceremonial ribbon by Duchess Kate, the riders pulled on their helmets and shortly got to the business at hand. From the very moment the start flag was dropped, Jens Voigt (Trek Factory Racing) attacked the peloton, bringing Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) and Benoit Jarrier (Bretagne-Seche) along with him. Voigt is the oldest man in the race, closing in on 43 years old. He is an inspiration to us old guys and the rest of the cycling world. This is an original small watercolor and ink painting (4"x6") that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com. In addition, this painting is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.
