Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's Road Race: Three More
Up the road, the original break was joined by three more (although it was now only five guys up front), so this trio set off to join in on the chance for a medal at the line in Harrogate. Toms Skujins (Latvia) was eager for both Gorka Izagirre (Spain) and Carlos Betacur (Colombia) to help him chance down the front of the race. For Izaguiree, it was important for him to get the country's colors out front. So many of his countrymen have already abandoned the race, including the defending World Champion.
This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available though my website at www.greigleach.com, or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of this post. Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's Road Race: He's Had Enough
The length (258 kilometers) and the weather conditions did not make for many happy riders. Once someone cracked on the steepest of climbs on the Harrogate circle, it wasn't far to the team support area. It had to be way too tempting to just pull off the road and leave the race. For Jonathan Castroviego (Spain) he had the added dis-incentive that his team leader (and defending World Champion) Alejandro Valverde, had all ready abandon the defense of his jersey. I would say it wasn't a day for those of sunny climes, but many nordic riders had already abandoned the race as well.

Yorkshire 2019 - MIxed Relay: Now It Is Our Turn
As the second Spanish man crossed the finish line, it was the women's turn to hit the time trial course. As Margarita Garcia, Sheyla Gutierrez and Lourdes Oyarbide rolled down the ramp, the Belgium team waited for their man to cross the line in turn. For the record, the women in blue are Sofie De Vuyst, Valarie Demey, and Julie Van De Velde. I was hoping for a baton pass, but this does seem considerably saver and more logical.

Doha 2016, Men's Elite ITT: Building All of the Way
Like Maciej Bodnar (Poland) before him, Jonathan Castroviejo (Spain) had been building his speed as he checked off the kilometers. And unfortunately for Bodnar, Castroviejo also posted a new best time as he crossed the line just over a minute behind the Polish rider. And again like Bodnar, Castroviejo wouldn't get to relish his best time long. Tony Martin was less than a minute behind him, as well. Martin's best time, however, was the best time of the day. Castroviejo held on for the Bronze medal. Last year's champion for Richmond 2015, Vasil Kiryienka (Belarus) also came in better than the Spaniard claiming the Silver medal for his efforts, thus passing on his Rainbow Jersey back to the German.

Rio Olympics: In Pursuit
The Spaniard Carlos Coloma Nicolas, decided he didn't want to come to the line with Maxime Marotte on his wheel. So on the penultimate lap he went off on his own, partly in hopes of chasing down the two men up the road, but mainly to come to the line without fear of being out sprinted for Bronze. The course was "spectator friendly" whatever that means, but it was true that hundreds of mountain biking fans lined all of the tricky parts of the course. Although some seemed more interested in taking selfies with the racers in the background than they were in the race itself.

Rio Olympics: Still Flying
This seems to be the Olympics for the elderly, Well for the older athletes. Ruth Beitia (Spain) is thirty seven years old. This is her third appearance in the Olympic Women's High Jump where she had yet to win a medal. Tonight, she changed all of that by winning the Gold. Now that is the way to wash away all of her previous disappointment. Just after her unsuccessful third attempt at Beitia's height, the American Chaunte Lowe rushed over to give the Spaniard a heart felt hug. Lowe has also not medal in several Olympics, but did not resent her competitors success. Yet another example of the Olympic Spirit (and the compassion of female athletes).

Richmond 2015 UCI Worlds: It's Rough at the Back
With the technical nature of the road race course, it was unwise to hang out at the back of the peloton. Due to the constant cornering or the three short step climbs, radical changes of speed were bound to lead to a touch of wheels and a tumble on the tarmac. It was Miles Scotson (Australia) who caused the small pile up at the back of the pack. Most riders like Fabian Lienhard (Swiss) remained upright it was one of the Romanians who joined the Aussie sitting on the road way. Fortunately, everybody was able to get back underway. With the wreck coming so early in the race, all were able to rejoin the peloton but at what cost?

UCI World Championships Elite Men's Road Race: What Do You Have Left?
Joaquim Rodriquez put in a hard attack on the final climb of the circuit in Florence escaping from everyone in the break and what was left of the peloton, he was a little surprised to find that Rui Costa had managed to bridge the gap. Rodriquez looked over his shoulder to discover how much Costa had left after he managed to catch the Spaniard inside of the final kilometer and over seven hours of racing in the rain. The two were far enough ahead of the remainder of the riders that had started the day that they had time to slow enough to practically use track stands and tricks of sprinting on the boards of the velodrome. Rodriquez learned all too soon what the Portuguese had left in his tank. This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that could be yours by leaving me a comment here. We can then arrange payment and shipping.
