Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's Road Race: Three More

Up the road, the original break was joined by three more (although it was now only five guys up front), so this trio set off to join in on the chance for a medal at the line in Harrogate.  Toms Skujins (Latvia) was eager for both Gorka Izagirre (Spain) and Carlos Betacur (Colombia) to help him chance down the front of the race.  For Izaguiree, it was important for him to get the country's colors out front.  So many of his countrymen have already abandoned the race, including the defending World Champion.

This is a small 4x6 inch original watercolor painting that is available though my website at www.greigleach.com, or you can simply follow the direct link at the end of this post.  Since it is an original it is first come first served.  The painting was created using Yarka St Petersburg watercolors from Richesonart.com. The work sells for $75 plus shipping. And yes, international shipping is available.

Yorkshire 2019 - Elite Men's Road Race: Three After Three

With just thirty two kilometers left to race, it was time to be off the front.  With three guys up the road, this trio of Mathieu Van Der Poel (Netherlands), Daniel Martinez (Colombia) and Matteo Trentin (Italy) were hoping to get to the business end of the race.  Van Der Poel and Trentin are two of the names that have been bandied about as being the one that will pull on a warm, dry, Rainbow Jersey.  Martinez was just smart enough to catch a good set of wheels when he saw them.

Bergen 2017, Elite Men's Road Race: Go at the Bell

As the race approached the final lap, the peloton caught the previous move of six riders.  Just as the bell started ringing for the final lap (or Bell Lap), it was Luis Mas (Spain) who seemed to take it as a signal to go on the attack.  Jack Haig (Australia) was still on the front from the previous attack, along with Tim Wellens (Belgium).  The rider in the white kit is Jarlinson Pantano (Colombia) who is just about to chase the sprinting Mas.  Even with the flurries of attacks, it is beginning to look like the men's race will be the first road race to end with a mass sprint.

This is a small watercolors and ink painting measuring just 4"x6" and was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting and all of my Olympics artwork will be available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  It is only $75 USD and international shipping is available.

Bergen 2017, U23 Men's Road Race: Tough to Catch

With the Italian Edoardo Affini pulled back into the peloton it was Lennard Kamna (Germany) who was the next to put in an attack.  He waited until the final ascent of the Salmon Hill climb to get off of the front.  Kamna had just finished the Veulta a Espana riding for Team Sunweb, so he may have the stronger legs than those chasing behind.  Trying to bridge up to the fleeing German are Valentin Madouas (France), Mauricio Moreira (Uruguay) and Daniel Martinez (Colombia).  Moreira is the only rider in this peloton riding for Uruguay, so he has done very well to be at the business end of the race with just 12 kilometers to the line.

Bergen, Elite Women's ITT, The First Corner

The start of the individual time trial is truly a trial, the riders come down the ramp onto cobbles, then get up to speed only to hit a hard left turn into a tunnel.  Coming back out into the sunlight they then climb on to a spiraled approach to a bridge... and that is the easy part.  The Colombian Ana Cristina Sanabria slows as she turns into that first corner on her way around Bergen.  While Colombian cyclists are known for their climbing abilities, she was able to turn that in to a podium finish today.

Rio Olympics: Do Some Work!

Further back from the leaders, riding fifth and sixth on the course were Mathias Fluckger (Switzerland) and Jhonnatan Botero Villegas (Colombia).  Fluckger appears to be frustrated with the Colombian sitting on his wheel.  As the duo come through the finishing straight for the bell lap, Fluckger tries to get Botero to come around and help chase those up the road.  Both were too far back to have any realistic hopes of getting on to the podium with just one three mile lap to go.

Rio Olympics: Going Early

I don't think I have ever seen the Omnium raced before, wow!  What a wild race.  Every ten laps is a sprint were points are awarded in the over all, 5 for first, 3 for second, 2 for third and 1 for fourth.  The other way to gain points is to lap the field, and that pays big time - 20 points.  That is what Fernando Gaviria (Colombia) is attempting.  He does succeed in gaining the 20 points, and he pick up a sprint victory in the process.

Remember this is an original work of art, so once it has been sold, it is gone.  Don't delay buy it now!

Rio Olympics: Almost There

It was a very emotional Oscar Figueroa (Colombia) who succeed in his final Clean & Jerk lift.  With the successful lift, he knew he had the medal.  Never the less he came back out to try to break his own Olympic Record.  He didn't succeed.  After bowing to the audience, he kissed the bar, the weights and then removed his shoes and placed them under the bar.  I learned tonight, that is how a weightlifter signals his retirement from the sport.  Chapeau!

Ruta del Sol Stage 3: Narrow Roads

Having technical difficulties loading images, check back later to see the painting here.  Or you can follow the link at the end of this post to see it at my website.

Stage 3 of the Ruta del Sol, was lead out by a large break away.  With the nine man group trying to slip away, the peloton was in no mood to give them more than a two minute leash.  As they crested one of the earlier climbs on the stage they squeezed through the narrow streets of Agron.  Tucked onto the back of the group are Alessandro Bazzana (United Healthcare), Jeremy Roy (FDJ), and Miquel Angel Rubiano (Colombia).

This is a small original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller Brushes from www.richesonart.com  In addition the painting is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  And yes, international shipping is available.

Giro d'Italia Stage 20: Doing It Old School

With all of the inventions in bicycles, frame technology, gearing, shifters and clothing, some of the old techniques are still the best.  Robinson Chalapud (Team Colombia) about to descent the Passo del Pura stuffs a 'Il Gazetta' up the front of his jersey to keep out the chill.  Having generated a lot of heat and sweat trying to bridge across to the day's break away it is vital to keep his chest warm on the descent where speeds over 60 kph create a substantial wind chill.  Several riders have been plagued with respiratory problems and fevers, some even going home unable to perform.  This technique is so respected that Europcar's soigneur is waiting to pass some papers to his riders.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard measuring 4 inches by 6 inches that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.  But while you are there, why not take the time to browse around at all of the artwork on offer?

Giro d'Italia Stage 18: Attacking Columbians

If the first week of the Giro was the Giro d'Australia the final week has became the Giro de Colombia.  Colombians hold first and second place overall, and they hold the Maglia Azzuro of the King of the Mountains, and Team Colombia has been present in virtually ever break away in every stage.  Today's stage included Johan Davi Arredondo's (Trek Factory Racing) cementing his ownership of the KOM Jersey with taking the first two climbs of the day (and here he is looking to make it three out of three), however he is being challenged by his countryman, Fabio Andres Duarte (Team Colombia).  Now, along all of the roads of Italy are very happy Colombian fans proudly waving their flag and celebrating with abandon.  Who knew there were so many Colombians in Europe.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting follow the direct link at the end of this post to get your piece of the 97th Giro d'Italia.

Giro d'Italia Stage 16: Into the Snow Line

With three big mountains to climb in today's stage from Ponte di Legno  139 kilometers to Val Martello/Martellal, you knew some Colombian climbers would figure into the day's drama, but the weather wasn't in the mood to play second fiddle.  True to form, Robinson Chalapud from Team Colombia was the first to head out from the peloton on the first climb up the Gavia Pass.  The ride up was cold and drizzley with snow along the sides of the road, but at least the temperature stayed above freezing.  With so much to play for behind, Chalapud never got more than 20 seconds on the attentive peloton.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard measuring 4 inches by 6 inches and created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  This painting is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com for only $50.00 USD.  For this particular painting, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  While you are there, why not take the time to browse around and see all of the artwork on offer?

Giro d'Italia Stage 7: Time to Talk

With the break away on one of the steeper uncategorized climbs of the day and the peloton starting to gain on them, Robinson Chalapud (Team Colombia) got into a bit of a discussion with Nathan Hass (Garmin Sharp) about speeding up the pace.  He is making the motion of revving a motorcycle in hopes of convincing Nathan to speed up, either it was a question of speed or Robinson felt that Haas wasn't putting in enough pulls at the front of the pace line.  Whatever the Colombian thought, it made for a five minute argument as the two maintain their order in the break's pace line.  Winner Anacona (Lampre-Belisol), another well named bike racer, just watched the two argue it out and kept pedaling doing his share of pulls.  No sense getting Chalapud cross with anyone else.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that is available for purchase at my artist website, www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting, you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.  But while you are at the website, why not take the time to browse all of the art that is on offer?

Giro d'Italia Stage 7: Going for It

Besides the final sprint of each stage for the stage win, the race organizers add an Intermediate Sprint somewhere along the route of the race.  Often times it is only rolled through by the break away riders, other days (like Stage 6) sprinters will go out in hopes of securing their lead (or gaining one) in the sprint competition.  The Giro d'Italia also awards a placing for the most victories in just the Intermediate sprints.  So the five man break actually went after the points in the town of Rieti and then got back to the business of trying to hold off the peloton all the way to the finishing line in Foligno.  The order across the line was; Robinson Chalapud (Team Colombia), Nicola Boen (Bariani CSF) and Nathan Haas (Garmin Sharp), these were the three that collect the points on offer, the other two in the break, Winner Anacona (Lampre-Belisol) and Bjorn Thurau (Europcar) only have the honor of being in the day's break away.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  Also, this painting (and in fact, all of my cycling art) is available for purchase through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting you can just follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Giro d'Italia Stage 6: Still Away at 15 K

The early break that had gotten away about 10 kilometers into the stage was still out in front (even if by only 40 seconds) as they went under the 15 kilometers to go banner.  The means they had been away from the peloton for 222 kilometers (roughly 133 miles) but there was a sharp sting in the tail up to Montecassio.  So it is hats off the efforts of Eduardo Zardini (Bardiani CSF), Torres (Team Colombia), Marco Bardiera (Androni Giocattoli) and Andrea Fedi (Neri Sottoli).  It is the second time Fedi has managed to get himself into a break away.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that is available for purchase at my artist website, www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.  But why not browse around and look at all of the artwork on offer?

Giro d"italia Stage 5: Climbing for Colombia

With the first Category 3 climb of the Giro, it seems appropriate that it was the Colombian champion, Rubiano Chavez (Team Colombia) that was first to get over the top of the Valico d Serra di San Chirico.  He was joined at the summit by two of the climbers in the eleven man break, Jonathan Monsalve (Neri Sotolo) and Fabian Wegmann (Garmin Sharp).  The climbers were rejoined by the other seven on the descent as they struggled to stay out ahead of the Orica GreenEdge led peloton.  Chavez added to his King of the Mountain point total put still trails Maarten Tjallingii (Belkin Pro Cycling).  This is an original watercolor postcard that is available for purchase at my artist website, www.greigleach.com.  For this particular painting, follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Giro d'Italia Stage 3: Lining the Streets

After two days of spectacular crowds and exciting racing the Giro crossed into the Republic of Ireland on its way to the capital of Dublin.  Just like the Northerners before them, the Republicans turned out by the hundreds of thousands to cheer on the peloton waving the Irish flag and bedecked in pink.  Today's road stage featured the customary break away and included Maartin Tjallingii (Belkin Pro Cycling) who further solidified his King of the Mountains Jersey that he won yesterday.  Riding with him was the Colombian National Champion Rubiano Chavez (Team Colombia), Gert Dockx (Lotto-Belisol), Ceccinhnell (Neri Sotolo) and Yonder Godoy (Androni Giocattoli).  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com.  In addition, this painting, and all of my cycling art, is available for purchase at my artist website, www.greigleach.com.  For this particular piece, you can follow the direct link at the end of this post.

Giro d'Italia Stage 2: Sprinting for Points

Stage two of the Giro d'Italia included the first chance for the racers to claim points in the King of the Mountain Competition with this relatively small climb up Cushendall Road along the northern coast of Northern Ireland, not far from the Bushmill's distillery.  With just a few points on offer from the Category 4 climb the four riders of the early break went into an all out sprint to get points for the first three across the line.  It was Maarten Tjallingii (Belkin Pro Cycling) that nip Andrea Fedi (Neri Sotolo) at the line for maximum points with Jeffry Johan Romero (Team Colombia) and Sander Arme (Lotto-Belisol) completing the make up of the four man break away.  These riders built up a lead of five and a half minutes before the team of the Pink Jersey and the sprinters' teams started the long sure chase.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from www.richesonart.com,  Also, this (and all of my cycling paintings) is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com  Or you could follow the direct link at the end of this post for this particular painting.

US Pro Challenge Final Stage: A Long Straight LIne

The teams of the sprinter's peg the break at roughly a minute and then left them out there knowing that they could pull the break in whenever they wanted to.  The reason to leave the break out in front is to keep other teams from attacking the peloton, with men up the road an attack will not put the peloton on the defensive nor will it gain a stage win unless the attacker also gets by the break up the road.  BMC is on the front to keep their man in Yellow safe and upright.  All TeJay Van Garderen has to do today is finish close to the bunch and he will run out the over all winner of the third US Pro Challenge, and race the he first finished third in, second time out he finished second, so it is only proper that he follow suit on his third try and finish first.  This is an original watercolor and ink postcard that could be yours by bidding in a short three day auction on ebay.  Just follow the direct link at the end of this post to get your piece of the US Pro Challenge.
