Beijing 2022: The Pipe Has Been Passed

It is stunning to think that Ayumu Hirano (Japan) was less than a year old when his competitor, Shaun White (USA) won hisfirst Olympic medal.  Hirano laid down a near perfect run that included a triple corkscrew hit and yet only scored enough points to move irnto the Silver Medal.  Clearly that questionable scoring only hardened his will to have his final run leave no doubt that he is the best boarder in the half pipe today.  And this time the points posted, 96.00 honestly reflected the quality of the performance.  And yes, I went for another weak pun with the title.

Beijing 2022: Farewell from on High

These Winter Games mark the end of an era on Men's Half Pipe Snowboarding.  This is Shaun White's (USA) final Olympic comptitive run in an event he has dominated since 2008.  As he layed down this final run he moved himself into the Silver Medal position.  However he ended his final Olympic appearence in 4th place.  There is a certain amount of symetry in that result, in his Olympic career he now has only placed first (three times) and fourth (two times).

Beijing 2022: First Is the Best

Those of you who read my writings know how much I love to create titles that have more than one meaning.  That is definitely the case with this painting of Chloe Kim (USA).  Her first run was a brilliant high scoring tour de force of half pipe snowboarding.  And it put her in the lead to stay.  Good thing too, she fell trying an even bigger more difficult trick on her second and third runs.  In her post event interview she talk about always trying to progress in her sport.  So she saw no reason to take a victory slide down the middle of the half pipe, but instead tried to land a move she has yet to land in competition thus far.

Beijing 2022: Leading All the Way Down

Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) has finally atoned for a showboat mistake three Olympic Games back. Then she had a big lead and put a little flair on the fill jump of her race,  She fell.  She was able to jump up and finish for the Silver Medal that year.  The next two Olympics she slid off course.  But this year she put the perfect run together leading the whole way down the course.  Behind her Chloe Trespeuch (France)claimed Silver and Meryeta Odine (Canada) rounded out the podium.

Olympics 2018: Soaking It In

After winning the Gold Medal in the Men's Parallel Giant Slalom Nevin Galmarini (Switzerland) laid down on the snow at the end of the race.  Not so much in exhaustion but in disbelief at his accomplishment.  It was just a moment to absorb his success and the roar of the crowd.

Olympics 2018: Historic Gold

Ester Ledecka (Czech Republic) did something that has never been done in the Olympics before.  She won a Gold Medal earlier in the Women's Super G (a skiing event) and today took Gold in the Women's Parallel Giant Slalom in snowboarding.  No Olympic athlete has won Gold medals in two different sports in a single Olympic games until Ledecka did it today.

Olympics 2018: High Wire

Much of the Olympics are about being able to handle the pressure to perform.  For Shaun White (USA) who already has two gold medals in the Men's Half Pipe, one would think he didn't even need to come to Korea to compete.  But then there was his bad run that left him without a medal in 2014 of any kind.  Athletes and the rest of us, don't like to leave the stage on a low note, so he fought back to the top of the game.  Today, he laid down a brilliant run with some truly big air on his final run to burnish his golden image, and to add to his collection of gold medals.  Well done, Shaun!

Olympics 2018: Big Air

After the women had finished their Half Pipe competition, it was time for the men to take the stage.  Today was qualifying runs to weed down the field to just 12 riders.  Apparently, Ben Ferguson (USA) didn't get the memo about dialing back his run.  He got really big air on his first hit, and just kept going.  He went into first place on his first run, where he sat until his more famous teammate, Shaun White hit the pipe.

Before Chloe Kim (Team USA) started her final run, she knew she had already done enough to claim a gold medal in the Women's Half Pipe.  Yet, she showed her class by going big, and posting her best numbers in the competition.  This to me is what an athlete must do, you can go half steam, you must go full gas - always.

Olympics 2018: Dropping In

Alas, I won't have time to paint these Games with the same intensity that I have painted the last Winter Games and two previous Summer Games.  Darn that working for a living thing...
