Rio Olympics: Out Jumping

The United States women may have been out jumping Serbia, but the Serbs were out playing the Americans.  The two teams traded sets, but since Serbia had won the first set, it followed that they won the fifth and deciding one.  The USA will play for the Bronze Medal against the Dutch.  The Serbians will take on the Chinese for Gold.

Rio Olympics: Not Done Yet

Yet again, there is a reason you actually play the match.  Saori Yoshida (Japan) had only lost two matches in the last fourteen years and she was going up against a young American, Helen Louise Maroulis.  Maroulis went into the final couple of minutes with a couple of points lead, but early Japanese matches had been won in the final seconds of the final round.  So while Yoshida was behind, the match wasn't over yet.  But instead of the star of Japan getting a take down, it was the American Maroulis who scored with just two or three seconds left.  With that, all she had to do was dance away until the final bell and the Gold Medal would be hers.  The first Gold for the United States in Olympics women's wrestling.  Yoshida did get the Silver, but she cried throughout the Medal Ceremony.

Rio Olympics: Bad Pass

Somehow, Allyson Felix (USA) fumbled the baton pass to her teammate, English Gardner.  At first they stood on the track trying to figure out where the baton was, and what they should do now that they were out of the race.  Felix gestured that they should finish out the race, and wisely it was her that went and picked up the pink aluminum rod.  She handed it to Gardner, who continued the relay.  By so doing, they were able to protest the results.  The Brazilian team had entered the Americans lane and pumped Felix as she reached out for the baton pass.  The IOC agreed with the protest, but how would it be resolved?

Rio Olympics: Like a Greek God

That is what I thought as I finished up this painting.  I guess the discus and the relationship to the original Olympic games may have influenced me just a bit.  The Frenchman, Kevin Mayer was on fire on the second day of the Decathlon.  He had the longest throw of all of the Decathlon competitors, a throw that moved him back into third overall.  The Frenchman had just the Javelin and the 1,500 meter race to complete the ten events that give the Decathlon its name.

Rio Olympics: The Wind Up

Defending Olympic Champion, Tomasz Majewski (Poland) fared better than his teammate and defending World Champion of the Shot Put. Majewski passed through to the medal round, but the Champion didn't manage to even get a throw without a fault.  Majewski was not able to make the podium.  More about that later.

Rio Olympics: The Final Hurdle

Damian Warner (Canada) cleared the final hurdle of the Decathlon 110 Meter Hurdles with Ashton Eaton (USA) close behind.  Warner and the others had to be happy to clear the final hurdle of the race, but they still had three more events to contest on their way to the unofficial title of the World's Greatest Athlete.  Warner's win here brought him just that much closer to the lead of Eaton.

Rio Olympics: A Watery Lunge

Using the canoe version of a bike throw for the line, or a sprinter's lean in, Iuri Cheban (Ukraine) forced his canoe forward to claim the Gold Medal in the Men's Canoe Single 200 Meters.  He did get the medal, but he did end up in the bay in the bargain.  Next to him, looking over with bemusement was the Azerbaijani, Valentin Demyanenko.  Demyanenko claimed silver and managed to stay rather dry, as well.  The other medalist (Bronze) to literally take a dive was the home team Brazilian, Isauias Queiroz Dos Santos.  For the record everyone else stayed in their canoes and out of the bay.

Rio Olympics: Brilliant Race, Mate

I was unhappy with the visuals during the Men's 1000 Meter Kayak Double, but this pleased my eye.  I hope it does the same for you.  The Bronze Medal Australian team of Ken Wallace and Lachlan Tame paddled over to congratulate the exhausted Max Rendschmidt (Germany).  Rendschmidt along with his teammate Marcus Gross had claimed the Gold by at least a boat length.

Rio Olympics: Fighting Back

The duo of Kerri Walsch-Jennings and April Ross (USA) had lost their third set in a row.  The first two of those sets, had bumped them out of the Gold Medal match, and the third put them down a set in the Bronze medal game.  Both games were played against Brazilian teams.  Mid way through the second set, the Americans (yes, I know that technically Brazilians are Americans too) seemed to come to life.  They fought back hard against the team of Larissa/Talita to take the second set.  Once the steam roller got going it was a quick third set that went to Team USA for the Bronze.  Walsch-Jennings almost seemed to be prouder of this Bronze medal than her previous golden treasures.  I certainly favor the hard fought victories in art over the easy paintings that go as expected.  I think athletes feel much the same.  After all, it is all about the competition, not just the win.

Rio Olympics: Leverage

The Azerbaijani woman, Mariya Stednik seemed to have the Gold Medal match in hand.  With just 45 seconds left, she had a one point advantage on the defending Gold Medalist Eri Tosaka (Japan).  Then Tosaka showed her stuff, getting a take down and its two points to take the match with just seconds left.  Stednik look stunned as well as exhausted as she won Silver.  However Tosaka had enough left to carry her much large coach on her shoulders as he waved the Japanese flag over his head.
