Somehow, Allyson Felix (USA) fumbled the baton pass to her teammate, English Gardner. At first they stood on the track trying to figure out where the baton was, and what they should do now that they were out of the race. Felix gestured that they should finish out the race, and wisely it was her that went and picked up the pink aluminum rod. She handed it to Gardner, who continued the relay. By so doing, they were able to protest the results. The Brazilian team had entered the Americans lane and pumped Felix as she reached out for the baton pass. The IOC agreed with the protest, but how would it be resolved?
