Tour '26, Stage 11: Flat Out

I had back issues and went to the ER today, I was worried that the medicine I was given would affect the way I painted.  If it did, I think it improve it.  This may be one of my most favorites of the fourteen years I have been painting the Tour.  Somehow even after a hundred miles at the fastest pace of any Tour stage in history, the sprinters were able to ramp it up just that much faster.  At just a hundred meters, Soren Waerenskjold (Uno X-Mobility) was on the front with Pascal Ackerman (Jayco-Alula), Fernando Gaviria (Caja Rural-Seguros), Biniam Girmay (NSN Cycling), Milan Fretin (Cofidis) and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Premier Tech) were all hoping that they could get around the Norwegian to claim the stage in Nevers.  Warenskjold has finished second in two stages thus far, was this going to be the one that he got right?  Or was Philipsen finally going to get that elusive stage in this Tour. He has one ten stages in his career, but not yet in the 113th Tour.  Girmay is still looking for his first win in two years.

Tour '26, Stage 1: Leading Off the Tour

It is the opening stage of the Tour de France in Barcelona today!  The race starts with a team time trial under new rules for the first time in the Tour de France.  The team's time will be taken by the first team member to cross the line, and all of the riders will be given their actual finishing times. So while it is most important to work together, it is a micro version of what it is to race in the Tour.  The team will work to put their team leader in the best possible position at the end of the stage.  The first team to roll down the start ramp was Caja Rural-Seguros.  They are a wild card team licensed in Spain and have returned to the Tour after a nearly 50-year break.

Tour '24, Stage 3: The First Mass Sprint

The first stage win for Biniam Girmay!  The first stage win for Intermache-Wanty! And the first stage win by a rider from Eritrea!  Oh, and it was the first mass sprint of the 111th Tour de France, too.  Girmay came up the barriers at an incredible speed to get around the fading Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek). Neither Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) nor Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) could match the speed of the Eritrean but they did take second and third on the stage respectively.  Sadly, we didn't get to see Mark Cavendish factor in the first sprint stage of the Tour, nor Jasper Philipsen for that matter either.  Still, there are another five chances for the magical number 35.

Tour, Stage 8: Adding Up

Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL Jumbo) has had to stage wins in as many stages.  The Dutchman has had two amusing victory salutes as well.  The first win he came across the line with his index finger to his lips, in affect quieting all of those who had said he didn't have the legs to win at the Tour.  Today he held on finger aloft on one hand and then counted to two on the other, saying I just went two for two.  Behind Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) got swamped by Groenewegen to take second.  After literally butting heads with Greipel, Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) bounds his bars as he takes third on the day.  It will remain to be seen if the referees take any action against either sprinter.  The actions were the same as the events that lead to Sagan being thrown out of the 2017 Tour with the important exception that no one crashed in the sprint today.  Ever consistent Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) tooked fourth on the day.  He may a rare mistake of opening up his sprint just a bit too early to hold of the other three sprinters.  The Frenchman hoping to wave the flag of victory on Bastille day, Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ) finished sixth on the day.

I did just learn that Gaviria was relegated on the stage for his agression in trying to move Greipel out of his way, as was Greipel for squeezing the Colombian against the barrier.  The resulting placing moved Sagan up to second on the stage and Kristoff into third.  With Gaviria and Greipel earning no sprinter's points on the day, Sagan's lead may already be unsurmountable in the race for the Maillot Vert (assuming he finishes the Tour).

Tour, Stage 7: Someone New

Yes, I realize that yesterday's stage was one by someone other than Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), but that was a steep uphill finish.  Today, it was a pure sprinter's stage with a clean approach to the line.  Today, it was Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL Jumbo) who got the better of the Colombian sprinter.  However, Graviria took second on the stage.  Don't worry, Sagan was glued to the Quick Step rider's wheel for third.  Taking fourth was the Frenchman, Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ).  Perhaps tomorrow, it will be Demare that claims a stage on Bastille Day for France.

Tour, Stage 6: Did You See Him Coming?

The two marquee sprinters of this Tour where chatting after the intermediate sprint in Plouguernevel.  Each were marking the other with Fernando Gaviria (Quick Step) crossing the line just ahead of the Maillot Vert of Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe).  Neither saw, nor were able to out sprint, the European Champion, Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates).  Both were so sure that no one else could come around them (even if they were at full speed), that Kristoff was able to jump them both.  There weren't enough points on offer, with the five main break still up the road, to radically alter the points tally.  But it does let Gaviria and Sagan know that there are still other sprinters in the Tour.

Tour, Stage 4: A Second Kick

It was Fernando Gaviria's (Quick Step) second kick that got him his second stage victory.  However, it was Peter Sagan's second kick that kept him in the Maillot Vert, by virtue of his second place finish.  Sagan just managed to get round Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) who finished the day in third.  Greipel seemed to have the sprint in hand until the two marquee sprinters kicked into turbo.  Still managing to be up amongst it was Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto NL Jumbo).  Today's stage was the first time the Maillot Jaune stayed put, remaining on the shoulders of Greg Van Avermaet (BMC).  In fact all of the leader's jerseys stayed on the shoulders of those who started in them back in La Baule.

Tour, Stage 2: That Was Fun

Two of the marquee sprinters of this Tour, Fernando Gaviria (Quick Step) and Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe) chat after going after each other in the first intermediate sprint at Beaulieu sous la Roche.  Sagan took the sprint (getting around the Frenchman Arnaud Demare - Groupama FDJ), but Gaviria glued himself to the World Champion's wheel.  I imagine that Sagan was letting him know that they would be sprinting for the stage in another hour.  And propably let him know he intended to repeat the success then.  Or perhaps it was Gaviria just letting Sagan know that he hadn't gone flat out.  Peeking over their shoulders are Demare and Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) in his European Champion's jersey.

Tour, Stage 1: Opening Up

It was Fernando Gaviria (Quick Step) who opened up his account in the Tour de France.  The Colombian sprinter (a country known more for its climbers) tooked his first stage victory in his first stage ever in the Tour!  With his victory, he claims the Maillot Jaune of race leader, the Maillot Vert of most consistant sprinter, and the Maillot Blanc of best young rider.  Now if he had only gone first over the only climb, he could have had all of the leaders jerseys.  Just behind, in his World Champion's jersey was Peter Sagan (Bora-Hansgrohe), followed by Marcel Kittel (Katusha Alpecin) and Alexander Kristoff (Bahrain-Merida).  Kristoff is in the European Champion's jersey.  With a few more days of flat stages for the sprinters, we may be seeing quite a lot of this young Colombian.  Given all of the races Quick Step has won, we will be seeing quite a few lead outs by the men in blue who call themselves the Wolf Pack.

Giro, Stage 19: He Just Needs to Finish

Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) was working his way back through the following caravan as he passed Alex Howes (Cannondale-Drapac).  Howes was filling his pockets, cages and jersey with waterbottles for his teammates.  A rider for each team will be assigned the task of dropping back to the car, picking up whatever is needed, and then work their way back up to his teammates distributing goodies along the way.  Gaviria as such a lead in the points competition, that all he needs to do now is finish the Giro and the final jersey will be his.  Alas, there is today's mountain stage, another one tomorrow and then the time trial.  By comparrison, the time trial will be the easy day.

Giro, Stage 13: The Long Way Around

Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) had to go the long way around his fellow sprinters to take his fourth stage victory in the 100th Giro d'Italia.  He started his sprint boxed in on the right side of the road and managed to get all the way around to the left side to take the win.  They may be some complaining from Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott), he found himself in a head butting battle with one of Gaviria's teammates which most likely took the tiny Australian sprinter out of his rhythm.  Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) grabbed second and it was Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo) who claimed the last step of the podium. Others who tried to factor in the stage were the aptly named Roberto Ferrari (UAE Team Emirate) and the pilot fish for Bennett, Rudiget Selig (Bora-Hansgrohe).

Giro, Stage 13: Adding to His Total

Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) must becoming very fond of his Maglia Ciclamino.  At the first intermediate sprint in Fiorenzuola on a very flat stage, he jumped free of the peloton to pick up the maximum points still available in the sprint competition.  All along the course of the race, you can see cycling fans holding out their cell phones and tablets capturing the race as it flies past.  I am sure that there are thousands and thousands of blurry digital of brilliant color all over social media.  Some of the photographs might even be worth saving.  I am sure they will be to the phone photographers.

Giro, Stage 12: Celebrating Together

There is no better symbol that cycling is a team sport than the actions of Team Quickstep as they crossed the line in Reggio Emilia.  As the stage winner and holder of the Maglia Ciclamino jersey, Fernando Gaviria punched the air, his teammate Maximiliano Richeze threw his arms wide in victory as well.  As each Quickstep team member crossed the line in turn, they all held their fists aloft.  A victory for one member to the team is a victory for every member of the team.  Behind Gaviria, Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina) looked at the jumbo screen as he rolled over the line in second place on the day.  Further down the order were Sacha Modolo (UAE Team Emirates) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo)

Giro, Stage 7: Photo Finish

Caleb Ewan (Orica-Scott) finally had the luck to get an open sprint to the line.  And with that he was able to pay back the efforts and faith of his teammates, just barely.  The race came down to inches needing a photo finish to decide the placings on the line.  It was Ewan for the stage by the width of a third of his front wheel.  Much harder to tell was who managed second and third.  It was decided by the officials that second place went to the Maglia Ciclamino of Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) and third went to Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe).  Finishing out the top five was Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) and Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo).

Giro, Stage 5: His Second

After the mistaken celebration of Luka Pibernik (Bahrain-Merida), it was Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) who rightly threw his arms wide in the true stage victory.  Gaviria's victory was his second in just five stages, and it awarded him the Maglia Ciclamino for the effort.  Behind him, the now former wearer of the jersey, Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) managed fourth on the day.  That placing puts him back into his German National Champion jersey for stage 6.  Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) rewarded his team's effort by making the podium on the third step with Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Triestina) making the podium in second, but not making it into this painting.

Giro, Stage 4: More Points

Fernando Gaviria (Quickstep) jumped free from the peloton to grab a few sprinting points in the last sprint of the day in Biancavilla.  Gaviria may also have been showing off the Maglia Rosa before the race went up the summit of Etna.  As a sprinter, it was unlikely he would still be in possession of the jersey at the end of the day.

Giro, Stage 3: The Value of Team Work

Fernando Gaviria's (Quickstep) victory was such a powerful example of team work, that it was is teammate behind, Maximiliano Richeze, who raised his arms in a victory salute.  Gaviria was so concentrated on getting the better of Nathan Haas (Dimension Data), Giacomo Nizzolo (Trek-Segafredo) and Rudiger Selig (Bora-Hansgrohe) that he didn't dare celebrate until he was over the finish line.  Just out of frame was his other teammate, Bob Jungels who finished seventh on the day open up a minimum of 10 seconds on all of the GC contenders.  Gaviria's win also made him the third to wear the Maglia Rosa in the 100th Giro d'Italia.  This was the final day of racing on Sardinia.  Tomorrow will be a relative Rest Day, as the race will take the ferry to Sicily for two more days of racing before hitting the mainland.

Giro, Stage 3: Making Their Own Luck

The Belgium team, Quickstep, knew that there would be strong cross winds when the peloton hit the flats by the sea as they neared Calgiari.  Six members of the team hit the front, used half of the road, and drove the pace as fast as they could possibly go.  By limiting the amount of road, they limited the ability of those behind to shelter from the wind.  Initially, the Maglia Rosa of Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) was able to make the front group when the splits appeared, but his lucked failed him at the most crucial of times.  Only three other riders that were not members of Team Quickstep were able to stay in the front group.  Both Fernando Gaviria and Bob Jungels had a lot to gain on the day.  Gaviria was racing for the stage (although a win may give him the Maglia Rosa as well) and Jungels was gaining time on his GC rivals.

Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) was thrilled to take the stage in Tortoli.  He had a rough time out on the road prior to the flat run in to town.  Behind him Fernando Gavira (Quickstep), Kristian Sbaragil (Dimension Data), Enrio Battaglin (LottoNL Jumbo) and Ryan Gibbons (Dimension Data) just could not catch the wheel of the "Gorilla"  The fast man for Orica-Scott, Caleb Ewan had been bumped by Gavira, forcing him to unclipped from his pedal to stay upright.  With that move, Ewan had no chance to vie for stage victory.  With his win and the 10 second bonus, Greipel had enough time to take over the Maglia Rosa of race leader.
