Tour '26, Stage 21: An Iconic Moment

I can only imagine what it would be like to race up the Champs Elysees towards the l'Arc de Triomphe off the front of the peloton.  This duo with the Frenchman Thibault Guernalec (TotalEnergies) and the Spainard Xabier Mikel Azparren (Pinarello-Q36.5) had built up fifty seconds on the peloton before they all turn right at the top of the rise.  Next on the menu was the three loops that include the climb up to the summit of Montmartre.  I wonder if they will still be off the front by the time they ride pass Sacre Coeur?

Tour '26, Stage 21: And Now, We Race

Egan Bernal (Netcompany-Ineos) in his Colombian Champion's jersey was lucky enough to have his mechanical before the peloton started to race in earnest.  Just as he joined Tiesj Benoot (Decathlon-CMA CGM), Guillaume Martin (Groupama FDJ-United) and Nicolas Breuillard (TotalEnergies) at the back of the peloton just as the pace ramped up on the front.  As they headed up towards the l'Arc de Trimophe, it was clear that the aggressors were hoping to get free of what they felt would be the grip of the sprinters' teams.  Here we go!

Tour '25, Stage 21: An American in Paris

I confess, I couldn't resist.  Once Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) attacked after helping his sprinter take the final intermediate sprint all I had to do was wait for him to come back down the other side of the Champs Elysees.  I realize that the previous painting was very similar, but come on, the title was just sitting there.  Simmons has either been on the front of the peloton or off the front seemingly every stage of this Tour de France, so why wouldn't he attack in Paris.  At the end of the race NBC cameras caught him proposing to his girlfriend.  Judging by her leaping into his arms, I would say the answer was yes.

Tour '25, Stage 21: Leading on the Champs Elysees

I have painted Magnus Cort (Uno X-Mobility) in previous Tours de France; in fact he owns one of my paintings of him.  All Tour I have been looking for him, and here on the final stage he pops up attacking the peloton on the drop back down from the l'Arc de Triomphe.  Given what is going to happen with the new course for the finale of the Tour, this attempted breakaway will most likely not bear fruit.  At least not the fruit Cort is hoping for.  It did finally enable me to paint this Dane racing in the Tour de France.

Tour de Fance 23, Stage 21: Back Up to the l'Arc Triomphe

With the Maillot Blanc back in the peloton where he belongs, it was a great time for a counter move.  And Nelson Oliveira (Movistar), joined by Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) and Frederik Fison (Lotto-Dstny) did just that with just two laps left to race.  They quickly opened up a gap since they were not at threat to anyone except those that wanted to sprint for victory on the Champs Elysees.  This was the second time Fison had tried to flee the peloton.  Most likely, this attempt will not be anymore successful than the previous.  Still if you don't try you definitely won't succeed.

Tour de France 23, Stage 21: Escaping on the Champs Elysees

If one is not a great sprinter, the only way to beat the great ones is to get off the front in a break away.  Frederki Frison (Lotto-Dstny) picked up where his teammates had left off in previous stages.  He was joined by two others that have been in breaks this Tour, too.  Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) bridged up despite no more mountain points were on offer, and Krists Nielands (Israel-Premier Tech) was eager to try another break away himself.  The trio had opened up about ten seconds on the peloton but with another 52 kilometers of up and down the Champs Elysees, it was unlikely to be the move to foil the sprinters.

Tour '22, Stage 21: Down the Other Side

Now that all of the ceremonies are over (well until the final jersey presentations) it is time to race.  I have always loved this view of the peloton sweeping around the l'Arc de Triomphe since the circle was included in the 100th Tour de France.  Conversely, I am disappointed to not see the giant French flag that has flapped under the arch.  As the peloton upped the pace to set up their sprinters they were moving too fast for me or Phil Liggett to catch their names (or at least reveal them on air).  All I know is that it is Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl, BikeExchange-Jayco, and Team DSM lining out the peloton to help out their sprinters.

Tour '22, Stage 21: Goose Bumps

Every single rider that ever enters the Champs Elysees on the final day of the Tour de France get goosebumps (or a similar phrase based on their cultures).  It is an awesome mixture of emotions, but I am sure that pride to have made it and awe of the spectacle of racing up to the l'Arc Triomphe.  The icing on the cake as it were, is when the French airforce does its beautiful flyover down the Champs as the peloton goes up.  The only other time the Champs Elysees is shut down to traffice is just ten days ago for Bastille Day.  There are rumors that it may be turned into a pedestrian and bicyle only road.  That does beg the question, where will the Tour race to then?

Tour Femmes '22, Stage 1: Let's Do This!

This painting is sold.

I am one of many that was very excited to see this return of a Tour de France for the women.  So here it is!  The race started in Paris in the shadow of the Effiel Tower and rode towards the Champs Elysees.  Once on the famous boulevard the women made twelve circuits from the l'Arc de Triomphe and the Place du Concorde.  I find it intriquing that the women are restarting their Tour on the same boulevard that the men will end their's in a few hours time.  I am sorry I wasn't able to catch the names of the two women who went off the front on the first lap.  They are from the teams of EF Education-TIBCO-SVB and Human Power Health.  I'm excited to paint the next eight days of racing and I hope you will come along for the ride.

TDF, Stage 21: Leading the Way Up the Champs Elysees

The trio of escapees still had twenty seconds on the peloton.  I can't imagine that Deceuninck-Quick Step, the team of Mark Cavendish, was going to let anyone stay away thus spoiling Mark's chances of breaking the record of stage wins in the Tour.  Brent Van Moer (Lotto Soudal) has been holding off the peloton for longer than expected earlier in the Tour, and when he teams up with Ide Schelling (Bora-Hansgrohe)and a strong time trialist like Stefan Bisseger (EF Education-Nippo) they weren't going to make it easy to pull them back.  It is a long drap up to the l'Arc Triomphe on Champs Elysees partiuclarly after 20 days of racing, and just another 12 kilometers left in this final stage.  Still, they seem up to the challenge at hand (or under wheel).

TDF, Stage 21: And Now, We Race!

With all of the tradition having been honored, it was time to race.  After the champagne toasts, the winner's team photos, the handshakes, the mugging for the cameras, and the procession onto the Champs Elysees led by the team of the Maillot Juane, it is time to get back to the business of a bike race.  The moment that the yellow jersey crossed the line for the first of eight laps, the attacks began.  This trio of Harry Sweeny (Lotto Soudal), Stefan Bisseger (EF Education-Nippo) and someone from Bora-Hansgrohe got a bit of seperation as the peloton flew back down the Champs Elysees away from the l'Arc de Triomphe.  As Phil Liggett said, "That might be the biggest flag I've ever seen."  Normally, their would be a fly over by the French airforce, but they arrived just a bit late.  I'll leave the interpretation of that fact to others...

Tour, Final Stage: On the Bell Lap

This Tour has been so very different than any I've watched or painted in the past.  Each Tour is its own special three weeks, but when it look so much like this one wouldn't happen, the fact that it started at all meant so much in these Covid Days of Uncertainty.  While for the first time, the Tour was raced in September, it somehow had the weather playing less of a factor rather than more of one.  With the testing protocols, it was never a sure thing that this day on the Champs Elysees would arrive.  So seeing the bell lap was all that more special this year.  And then finally, for my wife and I this year's Tour had an extra layer of difficulty for us.  As the Tour came out of its final rest day, she and I checked into the hospital for a long awaited kidney transplant for her.  I would be undergoing kidney donation surgery on the same day, but the kidney would be going off to Maine since we were not a good match (internally, anyway) and she would be recieving one from Georgia.  It made finishing my painting to the Tour a bit of a challenge, and I am guessing some of these post are riddled with mistakes, but with the exception of not painting Stage 19, here we are on the bell lap!  She is doing great, and I am recovering well.  So this is a painting, and a post, to remind us all of the beauty around us everyday, and to be sure to never miss a moment of it.

Tour, Final Stage: Time to Start Racing

With the formalities of the final stage our of the way, it was time to get to racing.  Although, I didn't see the honorary champagne toast between the winner, his teammates and his director sportif.  In the past the champagne was once replaced with a good English Cider, but I don't think I have ever not seen the toast.  Nevertheless, now it was time to race for the victory of the final stage of the Tour.  I was unable to identify who the Ag2r La Mondiale rider who was just rolling of the front of the peloton, but it is Nielson Powless (EF Pro Cycling) taking over with the pace making and Christoph Laporte (Cofidis) waiting to do his part to get a break away established.  While there are many iconic images of Paris, this is the one that is Paris and the Tour de France.  Every year the Champs Elysees plays host to the final stage, and everyone in the peloton is thrilled to have made it to the end of the Tour.  Many hope to achieve the rare feet of making a break stick for the stage, but it rarely succeeds.

Tour, Stage 21: The Sun Is Setting on the Tour

As you may have noticed, I don't really focus on the beauty of were the peloton is while I tell the story of the race, but this was just too beautiful not to try and capture.  I'm not quite sure when the Tour started arrive in Paris in the late evening, but it was a great idea.  This Tour, the sunset through the l'arc de Triomphe was particularly stunning.  It seems a perfect metaphor for this edition of the Grand Boucle.

Tour, Stage 21: Round and Round

Starting six years ago during the celebrations of the 100th Tour de France, the course changed to have the peloton go around the l'Arc du Triomphe.  It is much easier to do at speed than the U-turn the peloton used to do a couple of blocks down from the Arc.  Now it is always this sight, as the peloton swings back onto the east bound side of the Champs Elysees.  I can't image what it does to the traffic throughout all of Paris to close these streets.  The image is hard to see on the video (so I did take a few liberties) to get his.  I just love the low angle of the peloton with this magnificant Arc as a back drop.  At this point, Team Ineos seems to have their Maillot Jaune completely surround by teammates.  It is important to keep him from crashing.  If anyone does not finish the stage, then they are out of the Tour.  Should the Maillot Jaune not be able to finish the stage, it would pass to the riders in second overall.

Tour, Final Stage: Arriving in Paris

There must be nothing more exciting for everyone who had ridden the Tour de France than the moment that they ride onto the Champs Elysees. Everyone of us who have ever raced a bike dream of one day racing up and down in the shadow of the l'Arc de Triomphe - regardless of our level or ability.  After over five thousand kilometers the thrill of knowing all of the suffering is about to come to an end must tangible.  The only thing now is to finish the stage, and fight to hold the wheels or take out a sprint (or escape the grasp of the peloton).

This seemed like the right image to film while I was creating it for the last day of the Tour de France.  You can see this and one painting from all 21 stages of the Tour come to life on my You Tube Channel.  Watch it here, but be sure to subscribe to my channel to make sure you know when I post another art tutorial, cycling tutorial or some combination of the two.

La Course: In the Gutter

Prior to the men arrive for the final sprint of the Tour de France, it was the women's turn to race on the cobbled boulevard between the Louvre and the l'Arc du Triomphe.  The constant jarring of the cobbles can be very fatiguing so the women are all trying to ride in the gutter, the only section of some pavement to be found.  The gutter brings the risk of flat tires or worse.  I have once clipped a curb with my pedal sending me sprawling on the ground.  Later in the race, there were some crashes where at least one time, the curb was the cause for these hard women, too.  Riding on the back for now is the American,  Alison Tetrick (Cylance Pro Cycling).  Joining her were riders from ALE Cipolini and Boels Dolmans.  I have become a fan of Cylance ever since they added Kathryn Bertine to their roster.  Just to tie it into a nice little bow, she was part of the group that help to make La Course happen.

Tour, Final Stage: Is There No Justice?

Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) was the second of the marquee sprinters to suffer a flat tire.  However unlike Marcel Kittel (Etixx-Quickstep), Coquard had the misfortune to have his mechanical on the bell lap.  As he pulled off looking for his team car, he knew that his dream of taking out the final stage of the 2016 Tour de France, was further away than the l'Arc du Triomphe.  It was going to be impossible to catch back on even if he already had gotten back underway.  It seem cruelly unjust to have the French sprinter and best hope for a French win on the Champs Elysees to be unable to sprint for victory.

Tour, Final Stage: On to the Champs Elysees

After thousands of kilometers, days of wind and rain, countless climbs, road rash, mental and physical exhaustion, crazed fans, aggressive press crews and millions of pedal strokes, the peloton finally swung on to the fabled Champs Elysees and headed up to the l'Arc du Triomphe.  I know I had goose bumps as the jets flew over head trailing the colors of the French flag, I do not doubt that every one in the race felt the same.  The air force timed it to perfection flying over the peloton just as they crossed what will be the finish line in just eight laps.  As Team Sky lead the race onto the course, it was now time for the days racing to begin.  It was nice to see that Sky and the peloton gave Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) a chance to lead everyone on to the Champs for his last race across these cobbles.  Tucked onto the back of the peloton is the Maillot Blanc of Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange).  He may have missed the podium by a few seconds but he does go out with the title of Best Young Rider.  I'm looking forward to watching him over the coming seasons.

La Course: Leading Them Around

With Orica-Ais finally put back into the peloton, it was Anna Van Der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) who lead the peloton around the l'Arc de Triomphe for the fifth time.  During the 100th Tour de France the organizers finally convinced Parisian official to allow the race to swing around the famous Arc providing TV viewers with a beautiful image of another piece of Napolean's ego.  It also makes for a safer turn around point as the riders do multiple laps up and down the Champs Elysees.

This is an original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from Jack Richeson & Company, www.richesonart.com.  In addition, this painting is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To purchase this particular painting for only $50n USD, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  As this is an original painting, don't hesitate, once it is sold it is gone.
