Commissioned paintings of the Tour or just the roads of the Tour

This painting is a reworking of the very first piece of the 102nd Tour de France.  The original, still available on my website at www.greigleach.com had an inaccuracy that an Eritrean was quick to point out.
Can you spot the difference on the back of Daniel Teklehaimanot's jersey?  My Eritrea friend asked that I created a larger painting (9"x12") that included the flag waving fans at the start, along with the correct flag on the back of the first black African on an African registered team to race in the Tour de France.  Teklehaimanot went on to become the first Eritrean (or black African) to wear any of the leaders' jerseys in the Tour.  He was the leader in the King of the Mountains competition for two days.

The other piece I completed today was for a fan of my art and of cycling who lives in Spain.  He had sent me a photograph of him riding up the fabled Alpe d'Huez.  A feat that I have added to my bucket list, not that I am very good on the steep climbs here on the East Coast of the United States.

You, too, could commission a painting of your favorite cycling event, be it the Pro's or yourself.  Just send me an email with an attached photograph and let's get to work.  My email address, I hear you ask.  greigsart@gmail.com

Tour de France, Final Stage: Soaking It In

With the time already taken on the first lap of the Champs Elysees, Team Sky gather at the back of the peloton before the final sprint.  Having just to finish to claim his victory, Chris Froome wanted to ride across the final few feet of the Tour de France with all of his team that was still in the race.  Team Sky had only lost one man over the grueling 21 stages and 2,036 miles of the 102nd Tour de France.  Peter Kennaugh was the only team member who didn't link arms and soaked in the enormity of the achievement and the applause of the crowd.  Chris Froome will be the first to say that he could never have done it without Kennaugh and those with him on the Champs Elysees; Leopold Konig, Wooter Poels, Richie Porte, Nicolas Roche, Luke Rowe, Ian Stannard and Geraint Thomas.

With this painting, I, too, celebrate 21 days of hard work, sleepless nights and another great Tour de France.

This is an original watercolor and ink painting that was created using Yarka St. Petersburg watercolors and Steve Quiller brushes from Jack Richeson and Company, www.richesonart.com.  This painting, along with all of my cycling art, is available through my artist website at www.greigleach.com.  To buy this particular painting for only $60 USD, just follow the direct link at the end of this post.  Be aware, since this is an original work of art, once it has sold, it is gone.  I would recommend not delaying.

Tour de France, Final Stage: Claiming Four

As the peloton circled the monuments on the Champs Elysees the cobbles continued to try out.  By the time the peloton entered the bell lap the sun had even peered out from behind the clouds.  With dry roads under their wheels the sprinters were sure to treat us to a spectacular dash for the final line of the Tour.  They didn't disappoint.  Although it was the big gorilla himself, Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) that should everyone else that he is the sprinter of this Tour de France.  Alexandre Kristoff (Katusha) had the early lead coming out of the final corner, and Bryan Coquard (Europcar) had the fastest closing speed, but Greipel was the one to put it together perfectly.  His victory on the Champs Elysees gave him his fourth stage victory in the 102nd Tour de France.  Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo) was washed away in the sprint coming across the line seventh, but his fourth Maillot Vert was unassailable.  The one with the biggest disappointment was the Manx Missile, Mark Cavendish (Etixx Quickstep) who's sixth place on the stage was not what he had hoped four has he struggled over the Alps this past week.

Tour de France, Final Stage: Hitting the Bell Lap

After the peloton has rolled onto the Champs Elysees and the team with the Maillot Jaune has had there processional lap the racing can get underway in earnest.  Those who have made it all of the way to Paris covering over 2,000 miles on their bicycles make 10 laps of the heart of Paris from the Louve to the l'Arc de Triomphe and back.  So that the fast men know when it is all almost over, there is a bell wrung as each man enters the final lap of the day.  The French Air Force joined the announcement of the bell lap by flying low over the race trailing their tricolore of con air.  The fly by usually announces the arrival of the peloton, but this timing seemed to stir the passions even higher.

Tour de France, Final Stage: Away with 20 Seconds

The peloton must have heard Jens Voigt's complaints about the lack of aggression on the Champs Elysees.  No sooner had he bemoaned the tranquility of the loops through Paris than did the attacks start flying off the front.  As each group was caught another one would try their luck.  This trio of Florian Vachon (Bretagne Seche), Nelson Filipe Santos (Lampre Merida) and Kenneth Van Bilsen managed to open up the largest gab thus far on the Champs.  While twenty seconds is nothing...  It was more than anyone had gotten thus far.  Plus this would be the last chance for the LCL sponsored time keepers to show the time gabs in the 102nd Tour de France.

Tour de France, Final Stage: Prying Free

With Andriy Grivko's (Astana) first break away companion back into the peloton, he was joined by Jose Serpa (Lampre Merida) and Danilo Wyss (BMC).  With his cycling cap up under his helmet and his hipster mustache and goatee, Serpa almost looks like one of the riders who would have taken to the line at the very first Tour de France way back in 1903.  Of course, his bike is very, very modern.

Tour de France, Final Stage: Opening Up the Race

Either the toughness of the Tour up to today, or the rain soaked cobbles of the Champs Elysees had kept the race together and rather sedate.  Finally, it was Andriy Grivko (Astana) who opened up the first attack.  He was quickly joined by the youngest man still in the race, Louis Meintjes (MTN-Qhubeka).  The pair got the peloton to start racing, unfortunately, that meant that the rest of the race were quickly on to the back wheels of the pair.

Tour de France, Final Stage: On to the Champs Elysees

Following tradition, and each other, Team Sky lead the peloton onto the iconic Champs Elysees at the start of 10 laps from the Place de Concorde to the l'Arc de Triomphe.  Team Sky follow another tradition of adding some yellow element to their team kit to celebrate having the Maillot Jaune among their team members.  Sky cleverly replaced the traditional bright blue stripe on the kit (and their team car) with the Yellow of the leader of the Tour de France.  As he crosses the finish line in just a few hundred meters from here, he will officially be the winner of the 102nd Tour de France.  After that it will be time for the marquee sprinters still in the Tour to show their stuff to the thousands of fans that have been on the side of the road for hours.

Tour de France, Final Stage:The Beginning of the End

The leader of the race, Chris Froome (Team Sky) pedals up alongside the Race Director's car to shake hands with Christian Prudhomme.  At the start of each day's racing, there is a short neutral section of riding before Prudhomme will pull in the depart flag and let the racing begin.  Froome could be heard apparently apologizing to Prudhomme.  A little bit later we could make out that Froome was checking to see if the laps on the Champs Elysees would be neutralized or not.  The final decision was to take the time of riders as they crossed the finish line on the first lap, due to the rains that had made the cobble stones dangerously slick.  One only had to watch La Course early in the morning to see just what could happen to the peloton and potentially to the Maillot Jaune.

La Course: Taming the Champs Elysees

When the peloton still hadn't caught the lone rider it inspired them to take even bigger risks through the final corners of the race.  Unfortunately, those risks let to a crash that claimed sprinters and lead out trains alike.  The disruption may have been that extra advantaged that allowed the lone figure off the front, Anna Van Der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) to hold off the charging peloton and claim victory on the cobbled Champs Elysees.  Rabobank had gotten frustrated with the doping scandals in men's professional cycling back around the turn of the century, eventually pulling all sponsorships from the male side of the sport.  They have stayed in women's cycling and were rewarded yet again as their logo will be on newspapers all over the world.  I will let you take your own conclusions about their use of their sponsorship dollars.

La Course: Racing for Home

Rabo-Liv had the perfect tactical advantage on the final lap of La Course.  They had the Dutch National Time Trial Champion, Anna Van Der Breggen, holding off the entire peloton 15 seconds ahead.  This move forced the other teams to do the chasing allowing the team to sit in and save their energy for getting their leader, World Champion Pauline Ferraud Prevot to the line in her homeland capital.  Another advantage for them is should the others not manage to catch Van Der Breggen before the line, then they still win the day.

La Course: Looking for Her Teammates

After yet another crash in the peloton, World Women's Road Racing Champion, Pauline Ferraud Prevot (Rabo-Liv) is looking around for her teammates.  Prevot didn't go down in this crash but she was caught out and was hoping to have some teammates to help pace her back to the business end of affairs.  Riding next to the World Champion is Helen Wyman (Matrix Fitness) who among others, wasn't enjoying the wet conditions nor the cobbles.

La Course: Leading Them Around

With Orica-Ais finally put back into the peloton, it was Anna Van Der Breggen (Rabo-Liv) who lead the peloton around the l'Arc de Triomphe for the fifth time.  During the 100th Tour de France the organizers finally convinced Parisian official to allow the race to swing around the famous Arc providing TV viewers with a beautiful image of another piece of Napolean's ego.  It also makes for a safer turn around point as the riders do multiple laps up and down the Champs Elysees.

La Course: Off on Her Own

Orica-Ais came to Paris to race!  The first of their riders to launch an attack was Gracie Elvin.  She used the sling shot effect of swinging around the l'Arc de Triomphe to get away from the peloton.  The long down hill strait of the Champs Elysees helped her to build on the lead.  As soon as Elvin was caught it was another Orica-Ais rider who went.  They just kept repeating the strategy hoping that one time the peloton wouldn't be able to pull one of the riders in blue and bright green back.

La Course: Assessing

The second annual La Course, a professional women's cycling race on the finishing course of the Tour de France was raced in rather miserable conditions.  With the rain falling on the oil stained cobbles of the Champs Elysees, the racers faced ice skating rink like conditions.  After the first major pile up of limbs and wheels, Christine Majerus (Boels Dolmans) was on the front of the peloton trying to asses which of her teammates were still with her.  La Course is being raced without the benefit of race radios, so figuring out which teammates crashed and where everyone is can be rather difficult.

Tour de France, Stage 20: He's Done All He Could Do

Cheered on by hundreds of Colombian countrymen along the entire route of the stage, Nairo Quintana and his team, Movistar have done everything they could do to gain time on the Maillot Jaune.  And gain time they did.  The wearer of the Maillot Blanc came within one minute and twelve seconds of the race lead of Chris Froome (Team Sky).  Quintana can hold his head high, knowing that he has taken second place and won the Best Young Rider jersey for the two Tours de France that he has raced.  No small accomplishment.  There were moments in the final mountain stage of this Tour de France that it appeared that the Maillot Jaune would change hands just one more time.  But in the end, barring any unforeseen disasters, Chris Froome will win his second Tour de France along with the Maillot a Pois of the King of the Mountain, Nairo Quintana will take home the Maillot Blanc for the second time and Peter Sagan will claim his fourth consecutive Maillot Vert.

Now it is on to the ceremonial ride and fast sprint to Paris and the Champs Elysee.

Tour de France, Stage 20: An Unbelievable Win

Thibaut Pinot (FDJ) simply couldn't believe that he had managed to win the stage atop the immortal climb of the Alpe d'Huez!  Pinot had chased across the valley floor with Ryder Hesjedal (Cannondale Garmin) and the pair traded attacks on the lower slopes of the Alpine giant.  With this win, the French have now been victorious on three stages in the 102nd Tour de France.  This was the first win for Pinot's team, FDJ.  FDJ has a hope tomorrow with their sprinter Demare still in the race, even after the grueling stages in the French Alps.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Some Time in Hand

Chris Froome (Team Sky) was fortunate to enter the penultimate stage with a 2 minute and 48 second advantage over the Maillot Blanc of the Colombian climber, Nairo Quintana (Movistar). As this small group struggled to catch the fleeing Quintana, Froome was left with only his loyal teammate, Richie Porte to aid in the chase.  On Froome's wheel was Quintana's teammate, Alejandro Valverde.  The Spanish Champion had to just sit on the race leader's wheel, ready to attack if his team leader should falter.  Pierre Rolland (Europcar) who was named the most aggressive rider on yesterday's stage was happy to ride the wheels of those who had hopes of a high finish on the GC of the Tour de France.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Colombian Teammates

The acceleration that spoiled Vincenzo Nibali's (Astana) rejoining of the peloton was created by the attack on the man in second place overall, Nairo Quintana (Movistar).  Quintana was lead through one of the 21 switchbacks up the Alpe d'Huez by his countryman and teammate, Winner Anacona.
This corner is referred to as "The Irish Corner"  and it was populated by screaming Irishmen (and women) who cheered the Colombian duo with gusto, flag waving and drunkenly slurred words.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Catching Back On

After a very quick bike change (the mechanic deciding it was quicker to change bikes than to replace the flat tire) Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) went up the Alpe d'Huez in search of the group containing the Maillot Jaune,  The Italian had used all of his available teammates in order to make this junction, so he was left to use the Team Sky Jaguar for the final bridge.  Alas, as soon as he could reach out an touch the Group Maillot Jaune another felt he could attack and get a gap on the race leader, Chris Froome (Team Sky).  It can only be assumed that had he not had the puncture, Nibali would have been a real contender for the stage and another place gain on the GC.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Bad Timing

No matter how much a rider trains, no matter how fit they may be or emotionally strong.  Even in the old days, no matter how much they doped.  Lady luck still can be a very large factor in the out come of a rider's Tour de France.  Two different men while wearing the Maillot Jaune have had to leave this Tour due to bad luck and injury, many others have been unable to finish for the same reason.  Of the 198 riders who began way back in Utrecht, only 160 are still in the race at the end of the penultimate stage of the 102nd Tour de France.  Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) used a brilliant ride yesterday to move him self up into the top five on the General Classification.  Only to have a very badly timed flat tire, right at the base of the ascent up the Alp d'Huez.  Despite how quickly he got a new wheel it still meant he would be having to ride up the monster of the Alps faster than any other of the contenders just to rejoin the main body of the race.  Unlucky.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Leaving the Drama Behind

The Britton, Alexandre Geniez (FDJ) had left all of his break away companions and the rest of the peloton for that matter far behind him as he raced across the valley floor.  Behind the young Frenchman, high drama was being played out for the overall race lead.  Today was the final stage of real racing.  It is tradition that no one attacks the Maillot Jaune on the ride into Paris.  The peloton usually allows the team of the leader to take a ceremonial lap around the Champs Elysee course.  Once the ceremonial bow to the crowd has been completed, someone will attack and the racing will commence in earnest.  Given the profile of the stage, the lead that Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo) has in the Points Jersey competition and the traditions of the Tour, no jersey will be changing owners after the end of this the penultimate stage of the 102nd Tour de France.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Going After Them

Once Nairo Quintana (Movistar) had attacked, Chris Froome (Team Sky) had no choice but to go after him.  Quintana starts the day just under three minutes behind Froome on the General Classification.  It may be a tall order to make up that much time on a single stage, but with two Haute Catagorie climbs facing the tired legs of the racers, anything could happen.  Going with Froome was yesterday's stage winner, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana).  Point of fact, Nibali pulled back roughly three minutes on Froome in his stage win, but then he was over eight minutes out of the Yellow Jersey.  A Jersey that he wore for almost all of the 101st Tour de France.  Both of the climbs were lined two or three people deep, many who had waited for days to see the champions of the sport struggle by.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Employing the Old One Two

Team Movistar threw caution to the wind and went hard on the first climb of the day.  They first sent their man sitting in third overall, Alejandro Valverde up the road on the Col de la Croix de Fer.  Once it was obvious that Team Sky was going to let the Spaniard go, it was Nairo Quintana's turned to join his teammate on the attack.  The Colombian in the Maillot Blanc of the best young rider in the Tour, quickly put time into the race lead of Chris Froome (Team Sky),  Additionally, Froome's teammates weren't able to go with the attack, isolating the man in the Maillot Jaune.  It was still a long way to go over this mountain, then across the valley and up to the top of the Alp d'Huez and the end of the mountains of the 102nd Tour de France.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Here Come the Attacks

With just two mountains left to climb in the 102nd Tour de France, if any time was to be gained on the General Classification, the attacks would have to go early.  Movistar had the luxury of having two cards to play.  Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) was sitting third overall and could attack the peloton without Team Sky and the Maillot Jaune paying him much mind.  As a strategy, he could then function as a carrot for the team leader, Nairo Quintana, to bridge across to.  They also sent another team member along with Valverde, the other Colombian on the team, Winner Anacona.

Tour de France, Stage 20: Up the Road

Stage 20 had to be re-routed due to problems with a highway tunnel and a small land side on the approach to the top of the Col du Galibier.  So the break got off up the road going back over the Col de la Croix de Fer but in the opposite direction from the previous stage.  The course still includes the mountain top finish on the fabled Alp d'Huez.  The break away consisting of Ramunas Navardauskas (Cannondale Garmin), Alexandre Geniez (FDJ), Nicolas Edet (Cofidis) and Lars Bak (Lotto Soudal).  None of these guys are known as climbers so I think their primary goal was to get a head start on the two HC mountain climbs of the day.

Tour de France, Stage 19, Most Defiant

Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) showed the form today that had won him the 101st edition of the Tour de France.  The Italian Champion had attacked on the first climb of the day just 10 kilometers into the stage.  While there are those that question whether he should have attack at the moment he did, his legs showed what he thought of those questions.  After joining forces with Pierre Rolland on the descent of the Col du Mollard, the Italian dropped the Frenchman on the way up the final climb of the day, La Toussuire.  Nibali punched the air in his most defiant stage victory.  His efforts had moved him up from eighth overall all the way up to fourth.  Leap frogging over Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) and the early fading Geraint Thomas (Team Sky).  Now the question remaining... Does he have anything left in his legs for the final Alpine stage that ends atop the fabled Alp d'Huez?

Tour de France, Stage 19: And Now He Goes

Team Movistar had played their cards very close to their chest during the stage.  They even went so far as telling the press during the stage that Nairo Quintana wasn't feeling very well.  Even adding that they would wait and see just how he was doing when they reached the final climb of the day.  The team stayed off of the front of the peloton and only their number two man, Alejandro Valverde, got into the early moves of the day.  But with just 5 kilometers left on the climb up to the top of La Toussuire, the diminutive Colombian launched a spectacular assault jumping clear of every Tour hopeful.  He had waited until first Team Sky and then Tinkoff Saxo had lost their last remaining helper to their leaders before setting off in search of time against the Maillot Jaune.  Froome, try as he might couldn't get back onto the wheel of Quintana, yet none of the others could get close to Froome's wheel either.  In the end, Quintana pulled back 42 seconds on the race leader, but Froome remains in Yellow for the final day in the Alps, and the penultimate day of the 102nd Tour de France.

Tour de France, Stage 19: Let's Go Together

Ignorant of the drama behind, Pierre Rolland (Europcar) had pressed his advantage from the summit of the Col du Chaussy to pry open a nice lead on the descent.  He continued his attack across the valley and over the top of the Col du Mollard.  Ignoring his possible faux pas, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) continued his attack on the group containing the Maillot Jaune and the rest of the big names of the Tour, eventually catching the Frenchman leading the stage.  As Nibali caught up to Rolland, he reached out to encourage the rider for Movistar to join him in a combined effort to leave the rest of the peloton behind.  Perhaps he even offered the stage victory to Rolland if he helped him gain as much time on the others as possible.

Tour de France, Stage 19: Getting a Bit Testy

After his mechanical incident on the first climb of the day, Chris Froome (Team Sky) was rather annoyed with the behavior of some of his GC rivals.  As the peloton raced across the valley floor on their way to the next big challenge of the day, Froome took the opportunity to express his opinion.  As he pulled along side of Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) he offer a few choice words of condemnation.  Valverde probably responded that he was not the guilty party, the man Froome wanted was still up the road.  Valverde had simply sped up to avoid Froome and then kept going because of Niblai's move threatening the Spanish Champion's podium position.  Wooter Poels (Team Sky) waited for his team leader as the others continued their discussion of the etiquette of the peloton.

Tour de France, Stage 19: No Time to Panic

Team Sky and Chris Froome seemed to have done no wrong throughout the entire 102nd Tour de France.  Today, however, it seemed to start to fray around the edges for the British team.  First, the early attacks were too much for Froome's two loyal lieutenants, Richie Porte and Geraint Thomas.  Second, just as his rivals were preparing to launch yet another attack, Froome suddenly pulled up, stopping at the edge of the road.  Apparently, he had gotten a stone wedge between his wheel and a brake caliber, slowing him dramatically.  Just as Froome stopped, Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) launched the attack that his teammates had been setting up for the last five kilometers.  There is much debate about whether he should have attack when the Maillot Jaune had a mechanical or not.  There is an unwritten rule that you don't attack the race leader when they have had a problem through no fault of their own.  This is a rule that seems to be fading in the most recent Grand Tours.  But I will leave that debate to others in other venues.

Tour de France, Stage 19: Riding All In

With Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) pulled back into the group containing all of the main contenders, it was Astana that went to the front to raise the pace up the Col du Chaussy.  Riding for their team leader (an Italian National Champion), Vincenzo Niblai, both Tanel Kangert and Michele Scarponi were working hard with their jersey flapping in the hot breeze.  Nibali, who had one the previous Tour de France, as been growing stronger and stronger as the Tour nears its final stages.  Too bad his form wasn't this strong when the Tour was in the Pyrennes.

Tour de France, Stage 19: Hitting Them Early

With the summit of the Category 1 climb up the Col du Chaussy coming just 15 kilometers into the day's stage, Alberto Contador's (Tinkoff Saxo) early attack caught Team Sky and the Maillot Jaune off guard.  It is generally assume that no high placed GC contender will go out early on a stage.  It can be a risky move to put a lot of effort in early on.  A rider runs the risk of using too much energy early on and having nothing left for the final climb of the day.  A climb where all of the others will be planning to launch their bids to gain time on Chris Froome (Team Sky) and the others near them on the General Classification.  So Team Sky, let Contador take off on his own, after all, he is over six minutes behind the race lead of their team leader, Froome.

Tour de France, Stage 19: Talking Behind His Back

Each stage of the Tour (and every other stage race) starts with the men (or women) in the leaders' jersey on the front line in the start town.  Sorry Nairo Quintana (Movistar) fans, he didn't not quite make the picture frame.  Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo) in the Maillot Vert seemed to be in a scheming conversation with Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) behind the back of the Maillot Jaune, Chris Froome (Team Sky).  With today starting up a mountain from the very beginning, it was going to be a long hard day.  Perhaps Rodriguez was making an alliance to help Sagan up the mountain in exchange for allowing him to claim the first of the King of the Mountain points on offer today.  Stage 19 will be one of the shortest stage of the 102nd Tour de France, but it has four categorized climbs all Cat 2 or higher.

Tour de France, Stage 18: Another One for the French

With a death defying descent off of the Col du Glandon, a brilliant scaling of the Lacets du Montvernier, it was Romain Bardet (Ag2r) who spread his arms wide in victory at the line in Saint Jean de Maurienne.  The young Frenchman was able to hold off the foursome behind led by a pair of countrymen to claim the second victory in the 102nd Tour de France for his team.  While there were thousand of French fans to welcome him in to town, it was the flags of many nations including Colombia and Eritrea that waved in jubilation at the mid point of the Alpine stages.  As far as the General Classification, there were no changes in the top five with the entire gaggle of hopefuls riding shoulder to shoulder with the Maillot Jaune of Chris Froome (Team Sky).

Tour de France, Stage 18: Watching Them All

Chris Froome (Team Sky) after scaling the Lacets de Montvernier dropped to the back of the small group so he could keep an eye on all of those who would challenge the Maillot Jaune.  With the comfortableness of his lead, he may even have had time to gaze down the valley towards the monsters of the Alps.  Just in front of the Sky leader was Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) the two men of Movistar who are second and third on the GC, Alejandro Valverde and Nairo Quintana.  Rounding out the group was Vincenzo Nibali (Astana) sporting the tricolore of the Italian National Champion.  Froome as had the measure of them all yet again today.  They all seem to be running out of Alpine roads to challenge his firm grip on the Yellow Jersey.

Tour de France, Stage 18: Chasing One Man

With their countryman Romain Bardet (Ag2r) up the road, the quartet of Cyril Gautier and Pierre Rolland from Europcar, along with Bob Jungels (Trek Factory Racing) and Winner Anacona (Movistar) chased as hard as they could.  The final climb up Lacets de Montvernier was a new one to the Tour having never been scaled by the peloton, or any other Pro Tour race.  It was an amazing zig zagging scaling of a cliff wall that included 17 switchbacks to reach the top.  Fortunately, these men in spandex didn't have to come down this "Jacob's Ladder".  Try as they might the loan Frenchman continued to pull away from this foursome, even on the climb.

Tour de France, Stage 18: As Fast as Possible

Romain Bardet (Ag2r) had two teammates helping him in the early breakaway.  With a final push on the ascent of the Col du Glandon, the young Frenchmen was off on his own.  By being the first over the HC Categorized climb, all he had to do was stay off of the front up the final ascent of the day to claim the Maillot a Pois from the newest owner, Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha).  More importantly if he could hold of his former break away companions to the line, he would be the second Frenchman to claim a stage in the 102nd Tour de France, and the second one from his team as well.

Tour de France, Stage 18: Trying to Chip Away

After Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) had been stuffed back into the Maillot Jaune group, it was Vincenzo Nibali's (Astana) turn to go.  The Italian Champion was quickly joined by the Maillot Blanc of Nairo Quintana (Movistar).  Now this was an attack on the way up the Col du Glandon that Team Sky couldn't let gain any time.  Nibali was a ways behind the lead of Froome, but Quintana sat only a little over three minutes behind the Kenyan born leader of Team Sky, so without panic, Geraint Thomas (Team Sky) lifted his pace to catch this duo.

Tour de France, Stage 18: Not Giving Up

Alberto Contador (Tinkoff Saxo) has vowed to fight for the Yellow Jersey all of the way to Paris.  I do wonder if he will break with tradition and actually attack the jersey on the final stage of the Tour.  Today he certainly gave it everything to gain back the time he lost on the previous stage due to his crash on the descent of the Col d'Allos.  Using the HC Category climb of the Col du Glandon, the Spaniard jumped out of the small group of favorites and danced away up the mountain.  Nicolas Roche and the rest of the remaining members of Team Sky, let him go.  Contador is now over eight minutes behind the Maillot Jaune of Chris Froome, so they felt it was up to others to chase the main in the lime green kit of Tinkoff Saxo.  I was a little surprise to see the flag of Israel along the side of the road.  But then the sport if cycling is truly international.

Tour de France, Stage 18: Taking the Day Off

Peter Sagan (Tinkoff Saxo) has been in virtually every single break away in this year's Tour.  Mainly to amass as many sprint points in search of the Maillot Vert.  He now has over a 100 point lead in the competition, so with none of his rivals ahead of him, he decided he could afford to take the day off.  Well as much of a day off as one can when the stage has a total of seven categorized climbs and covers over 186 kilometers.  As the Tour nears its conclusion in just three more stages, it looks as though all but the Maillot a Pois has been decided.  But anyone can have a bad day in a Grand Tour.
