The last one to jump free of the peloton was the Russian, Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha-Alpecin). He quickly opened a gap, a gap that was big enough to move him up to third place overall, but not big enough to catch the lone leader who may have already crossed the finish line. The biggest thing though, was the crowds of yelling fans lining every inch of the final couple of kilometers to the highest point of the Vuelta. Zakarin went from 6th to 3rd place in the span of just 1500 meters. Chapeau!
