Tour '22, Stage 21: A Clean Set of Wheels

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) had such a strong sprint that you can barely see anyone else in the frame.  He finished leaving everyone else looking at him.  He did a bike throw at the line, but he could have been celebrate for the last 50 meters given just how much daylight he had over Dylan Groenewegen (BikeExchange-Jayco) and Alexander Kristoff (Intermache-Wanty Gobert).  Kristoff has Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) trying to bump him off of Groenewegen's wheel, but there was no way the tiny Australian was going to budge the veteran sprinter.  Peter Sagan may not be in the frame, but he did finish fifth on the final stage of the Tour.

This is it for the men's Tour, but I will be painting the Tour de France Femmes for the next seven days, so I hope you will continue to follow along.

Tour '22, Stage 19: Keep It Going

It was most likely a fools errand but these five went out in a break away on a day earmarked for the sprinters.  It looked like Nil Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) was trying to get the rest to keep working together in hopes that they could get a bigger gap on the motivated peloton behind.  I do wonder what Taco Van Hoorn (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) had to say in response.  Leading the group was the ever present break away artist, Quinn Simmons (Trek-Segafredo) along with Mikkel Honore (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl) and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious).  Both Politt and Mohoric are the only members of the  group  who have won a stage of the Tour, a total of three between them.  All of those wins have come from them going in a break away that made it to the end.  It is unlikely either will repeat the feat today.

Tour '22, Stage 18: Climbing Virtually & Literally

The title is a bit of a play on the difference of literally and figuratively, something that bugs me when people say literally when they are actually using a metaphor, or a figure of speech.  I digress.  Louis Meintjes (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) while climbing the Col de Spandelles was climbing the virtual standings of the general classification during the stage.  Meaning if the race were to be stopped now, he would have moved up to third overall.  It has happened in the Tour, two years ago and it pulled the Maillot Jaune off of Julian Alaphilippe.  Meintjes was joined in the effort by Chris Hamilton (DSM) and Luis Leon Sanchez (Bahrain-Victorious).  I'm not sure if Sanchez was going forward with them, or he was dropping back from the lead group and was trying to get on Hamilton's wheel.  This is the first time the Tour has used the climb of the Col de Spandelles and it would have its say on the Tour (more later).

Tour '22, Stage 12: Not Gone, Yet

With just under ten kilometers left to climb of the fabled Alpe d'Huez Tom Pidcock (Ineos-Grenadiers) was pushing his advantage over the remnants of the break.  He looked back to see his erstwhile fellow attacker, Louis Meintjes (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) was dropping off the Brit's pace.  With the group of the Maillot Jaune marking each other it look like this may well be the move that would win the day.  Remember he flew down the Galibier like a ski racer to get into this move.  Apparently, he can go up just as well as he goes down.

Tour '22, Stage 10: Who's This?

Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) looked back to find someone bridging across to him.  He had spent 26 kilometers off the front until this moment.  I wonder if he was relieved or frustrated to see Georg Zimmermann (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) tacking on to his wheel.  However, both were soon joined by a total of six others as the final kilometers of the climb and stage ticked by.

Tour '22, Stage 10: The Back of the Front

Once the 22 man break was established it quickly built a nine minute lead over the Maillot Jaune led peloton.  As the break headed up the final climb to the Montee d'Altiport de Megeve, Philippe Gilbert (Lotto Soudal) could be found right a the back of the group.  Ahead of him were Benjamin Thomas (Cofidis), Jasper Stuyven (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) and Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels-KTM).  Unfortunately, once the attacks started at the front Gilbert and Rolland were quickly dropped.  I was hoping for more from both of these two.  Rolland is on my fantasy team and I, like he, are languishing in the middle of the general classication).

Tour '22, Stage 7: Just That Hard!

Normally, I don't paint after the stage winner as crossed the line, but when I saw Louis Meintjes (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux) running with his bike towards the finish I just had to paint it.  It reminded my of Chris Froome running on Alp d'Huez without his bike several Tours ago.  I don't know why he was off his bike, but this whole image sums up just how hard the final kilometer of La Super Planches des Belles Filles was.  Ahead of Meintjes the exhaustion of everyone was plain to see.  Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) looked spent with his jersey wide open as he finished 13th on the stage.  Behind him wearing the Maillot Blanc on loan from the race leader was Tom Pidcock (Ineos-Grenadiers) just barely moving with his head hung low.  Equally sagging his body over the handlebars was Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) looking not as sharp as he had up until the final meters of the stage.  The Colombian still sits in 11th on GC but only just over two minutes back.  While gaps opened today, the top 15 riders are still within three minutes of each other.

Tour '22, Stage 5: From Start to Sprint Finish

Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) had tried to get the jump on his break away companions with one kilometer to go, but then ran out of steam in sight of the finish line.  It was Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) who opened the sprint, but had to content himself with third on the stage.  But it was Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech) who just out threw Taco Van Der Hoorn (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux) for the line in another photo finish for a stage victory.  This time there was no victory salute as neither knew who had one the day.  Today was one of those rare exception when the break away actually is able to go all the way to victory.  They did beat the chasing duo by 51 seconds and the remnants of the peloton by a little over a minute.

Tour '22: Looking at Each Other

This quartet of Taco Van Der Hoorn (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux), Simon Clarke (Israel-Premier Tech), Edvald Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) and Neilson Powless (EF Education-EasyPost) had been off the front since the opening kilometer of this rather difficult stage.  They had dropped two of their original number, but now it was looking like it would be the four of them vying for stage honors.  That is if they don't spend too much time trying to outsmart each other.  At least two were in hot pursuit behind.

Tour '22, Stage 2: A Jersey at the Top

Today was the first road stage of the Tour, and the first day where King of the Mountain points were available out on course.  Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) and Sven Erik Bystrom (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux) had dropped their two break away companions on the first climb.  Cort had taken the first sprint at the top of Cote d'Ashnaes Indelukke.  If he out sprints Bystrom at the top of this climb of the Cote d'Hove Straede, he will take the lead in the KOM competition.  Spoiler, he make it to the top first (and on the final climb of the day as well), making him the first wearer of the Maillot a Pois.  And the first Dane to wear a leader's jersey as the Tour races through Denmark.  Bystrom did come away with the most combative award for his efforts.

Paris Roubaix '22: Another Sprint Behind

To quote Yogi Berra, "It's deja vu all over again."  Yesterday the Paris Roubaix Femmes saw the winner come in alone with nearly a two minute advantage over a small chasing group that would sprint it out for the last two steps of the podium.  Today it was Dylan Van Baarle (Ineos-Grenadiers) winning solo, with this group of four unable to get onto the Dutchman's wheel in the closing kilometers of the race.  In the women's race it was five chasers behind Elisa Longo Borghini (Trek-Segafredo).  Here, Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) hugged the wall at the top of the banked turns of the Roubaix Velodrome forcing those behind to drop down to start their sprint where he would easily see the move.  You maybe able to see that it is Stefan Kung (Groupama-FDJ) who is just about to launch his sprint to the line.  He was first chased by Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) them Mohoric, followed by Tom Devriendt (Intermache Wanty-Gobert Materiaux).  As one might expect, it was Van Aert who got there first (well, second actually) followed by Kung in third.  Devriendt (a relatively unknown) taking a surprising fourth, and Mohoric having to accept finishing the day in the last of the top five of the 119th Paris Roubaix.

This will most likely do it for me until the Dauphine in June, my final warm up race before the Tour de France in July.

Paris Roubaix '22: Where Did You Go?

Tom Devriendt (Intermache Wanty-Gobert Materiaux) looked back to find Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) coming back to his wheel.  It has looked like Mohoric was the strongest in the break, but suddenly he dropped off the pace.  There was no indication that he had a mechanical, but he apparently got himself sorted.  As he came back to the unexpected leader, he brought Yves Lambert (Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl) along with him.  Just in the background, you can make out the red shoulders of Dylan Van Baarle (Ineos-Grenadiers) about to make it four guys on the front with 28 kilometers left of Paris Roubaix.  There are some of the favorites chasing behind, but this quartet is looking like the podium for today's race.

Paris Roubaix '22: Keep Going!

With the leading group down to two it was time for Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) and Tom Devriendt (Intermache Wanty-Gobert Materiaux) to have a strategy debate.  They knew that at least one rider was coming across, but a 30 second gap was a bit too long to wait for.  It seemed like their best decision was going to be, "keep going!"  At this point they were still in a strong position to win the 119th edition of Paris Roubaix.

Paris Roubaix '22: Maintaining Their Lead

Mainly due to the efforts of Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) the early break was still maintaining their two minute advantage over the peloton, despite having lost one member of their escape group.  As they crossed the Warlaing a Brillon section of pave, Tom Devriendt (Intermache Wanty-Gobert Materiaux) was stuck on the Slovenian's wheel but a small gap was opening between Devriendt and Laurent Pichon (Arkea-Samsic).  They have maintained the same time gap for the last twenty kilometers and four section of the famed pave's of Paris Roubaix.

Paris Roubaix '22: A Forest of Fans

I didn't join up with the broadcast of Paris Roubaix until just before the break away rode into the Trouee d'Arenburg.  This is the first of three the five star sections of cobbled roads.  This foursome was being lead past the thousands of excited fans by Tom Devriendt (Intermache Wanty-Gobert Materiaux).  The rest of the break had a two minute lead over the peloton and included Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious), Casper Pedersen (DSM), and Laurent Pichon (Arkea-Samsic).  With another 93 kilometers and 19 more sections of cobbles to go it clearly remains to be seen if this group has the legs to stay away into the velodrome.

Gent-Wevelgem Men '22: A Moment of History

It feels like a long time coming, but it was just that much more of a special edition of Gent-Wevelgem when a Black African cyclist raised his arms in victory.  It was a first in the cobbled classics of Europe, but most certainly not the last.  Biniam Girmay (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) launched a long sprint from the back of the group and had enough in the legs after  249 kilometers to hold off Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) along with Dries Van Gestel (TotalEnerties) taking third, and Jasper Stuyven finishing fourth in a historical sprint in Wevelgem.  Now he goes home to his family (and a hero's welcome) in Eritrea.  Don't worry, he will be back in Europe for the start of the Giro d'Italia.  I, however, will not be painting that race as I may actually be able to go back to work by then.

Gent-Wevelgem Men '22: Under the Red Kite

It has always been a bit difficult to get a good image of the front of the race as the enter the final kilometer of any race.  Today, I think I found a way to show just what happens as the leaders go pass the banner adorned with the red triangle signifying the final kilometer of the day's racing.  As you may notice, Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) is looking back over his shoulder as he prepares to attempt to leave Dreis Van Gestel (TotalEnergies), Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo), and Biniam Girmay (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) behind.  With just twenty seconds over the peloton and even less to the one rider trying to come across, they couldn't really afford to start attacking each other.  And yet they did start to play "cat and mouse" each trying to get the jump on the other in hopes of being the one to raise their arms in victory in just a thousand meters.

Gent-Wevelgem Men '22: Building Their Gap

It was a strong foursome that got away from the vastly reduced peloton on the road back into Wevelgem.  Biniam Girmay (Intermache-Wanty Gobert) was sharing equal pulls with Dries Van Gestel (TotalEnergies), Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma) and Jasper Stuyvens (Trek-Segafredo).  They had the perfect position.  Each had teammates behind that were capable of taking out the sprint in the group behind should they be caught, or they were going to have the legs to race for victory in their own right.  With a 34 second lead and only another thirteen kilometers to race, it was looking like the winner was going to come out of these four guys.

Paris Nice 2022: With Inches to Spare

I can't tell you how many times I have watched the hearts of break away riders broken within sight of the finish line.  The usual occurance is the peloton makes the catch in the last couple of hundred meters.  As Mathieu Burgaudeau (TotalEnergies) neared the line pushing as hard as he possibly could it looked like he was standing still compared to the peloton behind.  It was a full on full speed sprint behind being lead by Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo).  On the Dane's wheel was the Maillot Vert of Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) with Biniam Girmay (Intermache-WantyGobert-Materiaux) and Bryan Coquard (Cofidis).  It is such a treat to see that daring escapee actually manage to keep just far enough of the front to win the stage.  To give you an idea just how close it was, the stats for the day showed Burgaudeau finishing at the same time as the sprinters behind him.

Paris Nice 2022: Fluid/Fluent

It was a good day for the break away yesterday.  And a good day for swapping leader's jerseys around.  Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) the American on a Spanish team thanks to his being off the front of the peloton is now in the Maillot Blanc.  The white jersey is award to the rider under 23 years old that is the highest placed in the general classification.  The title comes from the fluidity of the movements of the peloton as it snakes through the valleys on the way to Aubagne.  The fluent part of the title refers to how Jorgenson has had to become fluent in Spanish just to be able to understand the advise he is getting just now from his teammate Imanol Ervitti.  Just ahead of the Movistar duo was the former champion of Estonia, Ren Taramae (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux).
