Tour de France 23, Stage : Dropping Some, Chasing Others

Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) used the climb up the Col de Marie Blanque, his teammate Sepp Kuss, and his own abilities to drop most of the contenders in this Tour.  Most importantly, by the summit of the final climb of the day, he had put a minute into his main rival, Tadej Pogacar.  Now he had three or four guys yet to chase down in hopes of taking the stage.  In addition to stage honors, should he catch those ahead, he will pull on the Maillot Jaune of Tour leader.  There are other ways he can claim the Yellow Jersey without winning the stage, but that all depends on how the guy at the front of the race, Jai Hindley, finishes out the stage.

Tour '22, Stage 11: The Two Men of the Tour

Try as the might, Jumbo-Visma had yet to crack the Maillot Jaune of Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) as they started up the Galibier.  In fact, it could be argued that with the exception of Jonas Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma may have just cracked themselves.  Near the summit it was just the two top men on the general classification fighting it out to see who might have the lead tomorrow.  

On a side note both of these riders are in their early twenties.  That is a great sign for the future of the Tour and competitive cycling.  I am noticing a generational change in the peloton, and while I miss some of my long time favorites, today is making for some very exciting racing.

Tour '22, Stage 3: Looking for More

Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) went out on a solo break today to add points to his tally in the King of the Mountains Competition.  While he may have wanted some company in the effort, at least this way he didn't have to sprint it out for the single point atop the Category 4 climbs out on course today.  He had already clinched the first Maillot a Pois and was looking to add more points as he approached the second climb of the day.  Should he claim the final climb he will most likely hold the jersey through at least the first two stages on French roads.  Not bad for the countryman of most of the fans along the roadside today.

Tour '22, Stage 2: A Jersey at the Top

Today was the first road stage of the Tour, and the first day where King of the Mountain points were available out on course.  Magnus Cort (EF Education-EasyPost) and Sven Erik Bystrom (Intermache-Wanty Gobert-Materiaux) had dropped their two break away companions on the first climb.  Cort had taken the first sprint at the top of Cote d'Ashnaes Indelukke.  If he out sprints Bystrom at the top of this climb of the Cote d'Hove Straede, he will take the lead in the KOM competition.  Spoiler, he make it to the top first (and on the final climb of the day as well), making him the first wearer of the Maillot a Pois.  And the first Dane to wear a leader's jersey as the Tour races through Denmark.  Bystrom did come away with the most combative award for his efforts.

Tour 2022, Stage 1: Home Town Favorite

Well... technically he is a home country favorite, but the Danish fans were cheering Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) all of the way around the wet streets of Copenhagen.  I have never seen so many fans along an entire time trial course in the Tour before, but they were out today dispite the weather.  The wet roads meant that Vingegaard couldn't go as hard as he hoped (he was my pick for the stage today), but he didn't disappoint his countrymen (and women) as he crossed the line with the third best time.  He ended the day inside the top 10 well positioned to be a factor in the general classification options for his team.  Jumbo-Visma ended their opening day with three guys in the top ten which I am sure is enough to put them in the lead of the team classification.
