Amgen ToC, Stage 3: Flying Solo

Having left his break away companion on the way up Mount Hamilton, Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quickstep) took off on a very long solo effort to win the stage.  He has set himself the task of staying off the front, alone, for over 70 kilometers.  He did start the effort with a ten minute head start on the main peloton, so it wasn't completely impossible.  He wasn't the most gifted descender, scaring the commentating trio of Phil Liggett, Bob Roll and Christian Vandevelden.  I wasn't enjoying watching him mishandle practiacally every corner either.  His erstwhile companion, Alex Hoehn (Team USA) pulled back about two minutes on the descent, but it wasn't enough to come back together.

Amgen ToC, Stage 3: A Job to Be Done

The team of EF Education First had a job to do today, and the peloton was going to make sure they did it.  Every time the camera showed the peloton, it was the boys in pink riding tempo for their man in the Yellow Jersey, TeJay van Garderen.  Leading the group on the way up Mount Hamilton was Alex Howes, followed in turn by Lachlan Morton, Segio Higuita, Tejay himself, and Lawson Craddock.  Taylor Phinney had already done his time on the front and had dropped off to make his way to Morgan Hill as best he could.  I'm not sure where Rigoberto Uran was at this point.  With those up the road way down on the general classification, there was no reason to chase the escapees.

Amgen ToC, Stage 3: Not the Time for This

Mark Cavendish (Dimension Data) is just not having the race of his dreams, his nighmares, maybe.  Yesterday he struggled valiantly (and successfully) to beat the time limit.  Today he must have been feeling much better, he was still with the peloton as they approached the Haute Catagorie climb of Mount Hamilton.  Alas, he had a mechanical right at the base of the climb.  That was bad enough, but then he had the slowest bike change I have ever watched during a bike race.  He did managed to get back to the forming grupetto and come in far ahead of the broom wagon today.  I think his body language says all you need to know about his mood at this point.
