Out of the original fifteen in the break by the time the leaders reached the last kilometer, it was down to just Daryl Impey (Dimension Data) and Tiesj Benoot (Lotto Soudal). Benoot had the superior position for the sprint, but Impey is can win a field sprint. It was going to take a true surprise to give the Belgium rider a chance to beat the national champion of South Africa.
