This trio that contained the American, Kevin Vermaerke (DSM-firmenich), Rigoberto Uran (EF Education-EasyPost) and the French Champion, Valentin Madouas (Groupama-FDJ) had been chasing all of the way down the previous climb. As they came into the feed zone, they were almost back up to the leaders on the road. They hoped to catch the large group in hopes of being able to fight for the stage victory. Many riders and teams knew this was their last chance to win a Tour stage so if they have the legs there is no holding back today.
