Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) had done a huge pull on the front of the peloton earlier that had split up the peloton. After it came back together, he went back to the front as the guy who set things up for his team's sprint train. With just one and a half kilometers to the line, he swung off and left it to others to fight for the stage win.
As the peloton flew past, he reached down and loosened his shows and rolled in confident that Mark Cavendish would validate his hard work.
