Giro, Stage 7: Stretching Out

The peloton was facing yet another long day in the saddle for Stage 7.  They would cover another 224 kilometers today.  Those at the back, like Michal Golas (Sky), Matteo Busato (Wilier Triestina) and Giulio Ciccone (Bardiani-CSF) took advantage of the relatively slow pace to stretch their legs and back before the racing heated up.  Even with the goal of riding at the front of the peloton for safety, someone is going to be on the tailend of affairs.

Giro Stage 10: The Finish of a Long Day

Poor Alan Marangoni (Cannondale Garmin) ran out of gas within site of the finish line, within site of a stage victory.  As the charging Nicola Boem (Bardiani CSF) dragging Mattteo Busato (Southeast Pro Cycling) and Alessandro Malaguti (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Marangoni pounded his handlebars and hung his head in frustration and disappointment.  Forunately for Boem, his strength held and he claimed his first Grand Tour stage victory in front of his countrymen.  Although it was impossible for an Italian not to win today, every member of the break rides on an Italian racing license.  That brings the tally of Italian victories to 5 stages, or half of every stage contested.

Giro Stage 10: Who Is Going to Chase Him?

Alan Marangoni (Cannondale Garmin) was the first to launch an attack once Oscar Gatto (Androni Giocattoli) was gone due to a mechanical.  Without the strong finisher amongst the escapees, the foursome had a resurgence of energy believing that they had at least a 25% chance of their first Giro d'Italia stage victory.  Marangoni was fortunate that Nicola Boem (Bardiani CSF) looked to his compatriots to take up the chase, just as he had been urging them all to work together.  Alessandro Malaguti (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Matteo Busato (Southeast Pro Cycling) finally decided that a chance at winning was better than a 2 out of 3 chance of just being on the podium.

Giro Stage 10: Did We Get a Gap?

From the drop of the flag, Matteo Busato (Southeast Pro Cycling) and Oscar Gatto (Androni Giocattoli) were on the attack.  After the duo had been joined by Alan Marangoni (Cannondale Garmin), Alessandro Malaguti (Nippo-Vini Fantini) and Nicola Boem (Bardiani CSF).  Gatto checks behind to see just how much of a gap they have managed to pry lose from the peloton.  The quintet went on to build over a five minute gap on the group containing all of the leaders' jerseys.
