Ryan Mullen (Trek-Segafredo) looked back over his shoulder as if to ask, "Is it just us?" He and Josef Cerny (Deceuninck-Quick Step) had just sprinted away from the other six guys in the early break away. Each had teammates in the chasing group and I assume were hoping that their guy would make it into this small group with them. With 57 kilometers left in the stage they may have 25 seconds on their former companions, but the peloton was just another 24 seconds back from the chasers. Without the help, it was unlikely anything would come of this effort.
